When I was a mature student , [1980-1984 ] I worked in my 4 summer holidays for two different holiday companies , as a courier.
The 3rd. and 4th. year I worked in Sheffield and we used a University Hall of Residence as an "hotel " and we used Carnel Coaches for taking the elderly holidaymakers round the local famous places of interest.
I think Carnel's was then based in Attercliffe [Leigh Street?] and from what I remember they were reliable and the drivers were friendly and helpful. I also got a free lift from them to go for a teaching job interview on the south coast. [Didn't get the job!]. Yes , my memories of Carnel's are very positive.

Yes, we went to Sitges in Spain with them, it was a superb hol, the coach was a 6wheel Neoplan double decker, a real luxury job, and the holiday was excellent value for money.
Unfortunately, I think Trevor overstretched hhimself a bit, and eventually went bust.
I was working then as a bus driver based at Greenland Rd, and Trevor came to work there, it was very sad to see a man who had been in business having to drive a bus for a living, he had also spent a small fortune on private medical help for his daughter who was disabled.
He always wanted to start again in the coach business, but sadly, bad health overtook him.

Yes, very sad, Trevor drove a taxi before the coach idea came to him, he use to give is free rides home from the dances if we were lucky enough to get his taxi in Fitz Square, yes his money came to him very fast but it was through hard work, i had forgotten about his disabled daughter, wife Maureens a lovely woman, nice of you to remember Trevor malc.

I used to drive for Trevor in the early 1970's. Very 'interesting' trips. When we ran evening trips to Batley and Wakefield Theatre clubs nearly every night.
Also di runs from Calais to Costa Brava and Sitges
Don't know if anyone knows, but Trevor passed away a few years ago after going through a heart operation.
Good memories and made a lot of friends while working for him

So glad you have nice memories of Trevor, he was a good hard working family man, left behind a lovely wife and daughter.

Yes Carnels were based on Leigh Street, I remember them from the mid 1980's, they had quite an impressive fleet of coaches usually european, Setra's I think, complete with drinks machines, seatbelts, on board video and toilet sounds nothing now, but was like wow in the 1980's. I believe they used to supply coaches to Sheff Wed to transport them to away matches etc.

Around that time they had a contract with Sheffield Education Committee to collect pupils from schools and take them to the local swimming baths like Woodthorpe or Attercliffe. There was one particular driver called Ron who was very good with the kids, he would put on videos when going on trips. The school would always request him for the annual school trip to London.

I worked for T in the early 80's
The fleet consisted of Merc engined Setras, two deckers and 8 singles, a MAN (merc v10) and another single.

Oh the joy of the exhaust brake in the Gothard Tunnel

I wont tell where the contents of the loos went, but does any driver remember the blue lagoon at Calais?

I remember Carnels took us to the motor show at the NEC i think it was around 1979 in a Plaxton Veiwmaster. At the time it was the highest coach on the road and also the driver had a shaggy hair perm, would that have been Trevor himself?.

HI poppins sorry to hear about Trev great lad he took my family 4 of us to Blackpool twice before he had coaches I was 8/9 at the time, one great memory was a trip to Wesward Ho Devon on his first coach named FIREFLY with huge airhorns on the front. We had a right job putting all the tent poles down the middle of the bus we were 231st Shiregreen scout troop, that would be mid 60s I remember HELP--BEATLES on the radio all day.Trevor told us and we believed, he was the fastest coach driver in the world every bus we passed off went the airhorns [what a sound] later that year came the club kids trip Sheffield Lane Top to Skeggy, all my mates were heading for bus 1 out of about 30 I informed them with a firm trust me we want that one with the airhorns, setting off in around 19th place we arrived a safe second in Skeggy car park. So who knows may be he was the fastest[bless him] happy days..

Trevor Carnell was a great bloke and his staff thought the world of him - my uncle drove for him in the 1970s/80s. When, as 'little malc' wrote, he overstretched himself and went bankrupt, Sheffield lost its best coach firm. I remember one occasion in June 1984 when I came out of a hotel in Moscow and thought I was seeing things - there was a Carnell coach. It was on contract to another firm, and I had a good chat with the driver who was just as surprised to see another Sheffielder as I was. Trevor Carnell died in June 1995 - he had just turned 60 and should have lived a lot longer.
