View Full Version : Animosity Between Neighbour Towns on this Forum
muddycoffee 16-05-2005, 19:56 Especially on the threads about the New airport but also in other areas. There is lots of underlying suspicion and rubbishing of the Neighboring towns and cities, especially between Rotherham and Sheffield members.
I think that this is wrong, un called for, damaging to the region and very counter productive. Although Born and Bred in Sheffield, I have worked and know very well Rotherham, and Chesterfield, and to a smaller extent Doncaster and Barnsley. All the south yorks towns seem to me to be so similar that you can hardly tell parts of them apart. And Chesterfield is a lovely place too for the most part.
All of our local cities have rough areas, chavs(in Rotherham they're called scuffers!), slums, strays, drugs, drunks but they all have lots of very nice areas too. The people in all of them are generally very nice, and I feel at home, and would be happy to live in any of them. Go for a drink in any of them, see a music concert in any of them, or play a gig in any of them. etc.
Anybody else ?
I don't think it's too serious, it's only at the level you'll find in the blades/owl threads.
The forum is a fair representation of real life society, and the banter you hear in real life, you'll also hear on here. It's just something for the mods to address if it gets out of hand. If things did calm down after you highlighting the issue, it would only crop up again in a few months with new members. It can be irritating, but so can the owls thread, internet jargon, txt spk and bad grammar and spelling.
Because of how the forum works, we all find ourselves being joined in conversations by people we wouldn't associate with (or could walk away from) in real life. I have a very short fuse and it's something I'm personally still working on!
I think in the main it is just fun, and is a traditional banter born out of towns being proud of their individual identity.
I mean, Sheffield people calling Barnsley people Dingles who in return call Sheffielders DeeDaas can never be serious hate can it - too laughable!
muddycoffee 16-05-2005, 20:23 I don't go on football threads but I also find that totally childish too. My brother and Dad, pretend to take pleasure in UTD doing bad, and Lots of the Local Lads around here in Woodseats take Pleasure in Weds. doing bad.
I don't like football but being a sheffielder, there is nothing I would like more if Weds. and UTD were in the Premier Division with Rotherham and Barnsley. We would be the centre of the world in some people's eyes if it was like that, but no, they want the other half of the city to fail. Just a completely stupid and extremely mardy and childish attitude. When I hear this in the local pubs I find it embarrasing.
When Barnsley did well a couple of years ago and got in to the Premier division I was proud that a local team was doing well. I had no intrest in the games or the score. I even went to Danny Wilson's house and put on a show there in a marquee, they were great times for the region of south yorkshire. He pulled me a pint and I met Viv Anderson. There were loads of young fit blokes there who were probably in his team but I hadn't a clue who they were.
When Chesterfield got into the final of the FA cup final/s/? about 8 years ago every single car in the whole town had a blue ribbon on it's aerial. Even people who didn't support the team. They wanted the town to have it's ten minutes of fame. The whole place had a buzz and spirit about it and you didn't have to be a football fan to apreciate it.

That depends. Some so called fans out there don't have the brain capacity:loopy:
Yeah, I'd noticed the 'when satuday comes' and 'billy elliot' mentality that permeates society here. Dragging people down is a regional pastime. Anybody who tries anything beyond going out and getting ****** is the subject of derision, and the 'who do you think you are?' attitude and looking down noses thing is all to evident every time I ..... ? ..... venture to crystal peaks or meadowhall...... is that significant :suspect:
The most animosity I have seen/read seems to be between Rotherham Council and Sheffield Council. They seem very territorial and always seem to be having a go at the other one. Can't see the point really, it's not as if people just stick to the boundry between Sheffield/Rotherham/Barnsley/Doncaster/Chesterfield ? But, have you noticed the 'border' areas are usually less well maintained? Bizzare if you ask me.
