I went to cyprus and contracted salmonella poisoning, went to hospital, lay around feeling rubbish and then went home. :( Best holiday Ive ever had! You'll be pleased to hear I caught the salmonella the night before I left in durham so cyprus wasn't to blame! I did see a great deal of potential for a great holiday however :D Have fun!

We stayed in Paphos all inclusive and the food was amazing quality, far too much to eat, hope you get the same quality. None of us had stomach bugs. Can't remember the places we visited by name but get yourself out on a tour, it's great to see things off the beaten track. We went on a tour which included an amazing lunch with wine and 'fire water' their national drink, phew that stuff knocks your head off, then on to wine tasting. It was a trip in a mini bus and needless to say we were all laughing and singing on the way home. We also stopped off at an Orchid farm and snake farm, due to the fire water I actually let the little old tour guide put a poisonous snake round my neck! Hope you have fun.

We're going in August for the third time in four years. Best bet is to hire a 4x4 and get yourself a map of the island. The Akamas peninsula (south west corner) is great as are the troodos mountains.

Yeah its ok - nothing special. Just your typical tourist holiday place. One good thing is the weather. It was really sunny and hot and the car hire companies only seemed to have open top jeeps so we got one and it was good.

Ignore him - he's a mardy bum and sooo difficult to please!!!! We had a great time but as it was out of season it was a little bit quiet. Great people though and gorgeous food on the harbour. And despite what Vini says, we WILL be going back :hihi:

Book on Georges Fun Bus. (Make sure it's Georges!) You can book these trips in Paphos or Limasol. Best holiday day trip I ever had.
Try and get on the bus that George drives - He's the spit of Ali G and has the humour to go with it. He tours the island in a minibus, stopping off at beauty spots and interesting historical sites. You get a chance to dive into an icy lagoon and swim to a waterfall. His crew cook the most amazing each BBQ while you drink free wine (yep it's ropey!). Then he brings out the guitar for a singalong. He played every song that was requested from Nirvana to Bob the Builder!! And the whole day is videoed for ya too. Trust me -it's ace!

Hey everyone just come back from cyprus!

It was a great holiday, all inclusive food and booze, couldnt complain!, Great Weather! Lovely beach and pool.

Had a great day at my friends wedding, a traditional cypriot wedding, was quite interesting, i couldnt understand a word but it was something different. She had the most beautiful wedding dress ive ever seen, i was so jealous, she looked gorgeous. Her family made us so welocme into her home where they cooked fabulous cypriot food. (think i put on a few pounds but hey its a holiday!)

Something ive noticed about cypriot men in their cars driving about, they beep their horn at u when your walkin along the street and some even stop by u and say things i wouldnt even dream of sayin to another person of the opposite sex! It was ok on the first day but got rather annoying afterwards.

Clubs are great in limmasol the ones we went to. drinks are reasonably priced, a great laugh though on those kareoke nights in the bars. Some nice fit barmen too :heyhey:

All in all a great holiday we had and maybe would return again in the future! I would recommend going all inclusive as the food and drink can be pretty pricey.

I'm off to Northern Cyprus & I'm staying in Kyrenia. What is there to see & do? Is it expensive? I've been told you have to pay to go on the beaches & if so, how much? What are the local buses like & how much spending money will I need to take?
Thanks
Sorry for all the questions

Apart from having no power, aircon or water I'm sure you will have a fantastic time...

They had a big explosion this morning that shut off the largest of the three power stations on the island - currently there is massive power rationing, no water, and hence no aircon and all the other stuff. you may want to check with your tour operator to see if you are affected...

That's in southern Cyprus though. Seeing as the north and south is divided into virtually 2 separate countries, I'd be surprised if it affected northern Cyprus too much.

There are only three power stations in Cyprus for the entire island. They generate power which is sent to the occipied part and are unable to collect monies for them at times - I can guess who is going to be cut off from rationed power first! As to what generation the Turkish side have I'm unsure.

I went last November and did a week of diving near Kyrenia. It's an odd country, we were in the Turkish part and there are some interesting old ruined castles, and nice diving, but the beaches could be a bit hit and miss and some parts of the city and surrounding area looked like 3rd world countries.
I've never been chased by dogs before when going for a run for example!

I used to live in Cyprus and visited the Turkish side - have fond memories of castles and beaches etc...not so much of smelly water out of the taps but it was about 15 years ago! Would love to go back but if i were to go to the Greek side, feel i would be disappointed because of the mass development that i've heard about.

that's a massive story, for Cyprus. As stated check with the tour operator.

I've never been there but there could a problem in that is Cyprus is not poor and this is a bit of a double-edged sword in this instance. In really poor developing countries, hotels will nomally have their own generators in the event of power cuts, which are the norm.

I would imagine this won't be not be the norm in Cyprus anywhere near as much. Nobody was expecting a massive proportion of the islands' power generation to get wasted like that. They'll be trying to get emergency generation sorted, but it may be a bit of a battle for them. The United Nations sure isn't popular in Cyprus at the moment.

I wouldn't count on it - they are planning on four to six months of problems in our offices out there - they reckon it's a demolish and rebuild job on the power station. Hopefully they can get some floating generation from ships moved in from countries nearby though whcih should ease the problems somewhat.

I've just found out that it's not Kyrenia we're stopping in, but Kapta or Kapithos. Does anyone know how far away it is from Kyrenia? Would we have to catch a bus or would we be able to walk it?

Things seem to be looking up for the power in Cyprus.

http://www.cyprus-mail.com/cyprus/power-supply-should-be-normal-within-weeks/20110719

THE ELECTRICITY Authority of Cyprus (EAC) should be able to meet power demands within the next few weeks pending a private sector agreement for the supply, installation, operation and maintenance of temporary generators, chairman, Harris Thrassou said yesterday.

Cheers guys :PSad that you're going to Limassol which is a bit of a dump these days, Paphos is the place to go with access to many places, I would avoid the trips because you tend to stop at places the tour guide gets backhanders for, we went on a trip to Troodos and drove straight through the village and down to a restraunt in Platres where the guide was payed to take us to.
Hire a car as we always do on our frequent visits, we pick ours up at the airport and drop it off there.

Just be careful with car hire if you intend to cross the green line (or whatever it's called).

Just be careful with car hire if you intend to cross the green line (or whatever it's called).
You should be informed by any reputable car hire company regarding issues over entering Northern Cyprus especialy regarding validity of vehicle insurance.
We use a very reliable and highly recommended Paphos hire company.

Arrived in Kyrenia to play at the 'Harbour Club' in the winter on a stormy night, it was like something out of Robert Louis Stevenson, they had to put us up in a hotel due to the weather and rain causing a landslide to block the road.
This was before partition.
