View Full Version : Dog rescue disaster, 90+ dogs in danger of PTS

I just had a call from pets@home asking me to ask for the forums help for Doris Banham dogs.

Pets@home has today received some devastating news, Doris Banham dog rescue has totally ran out of funding, there are 90+ dogs in boarding kennels that she now has no money to pay the boarding fees for.

These dogs are all death row dogs from pounds across the country....how ironic that they were rescued from the threat of PTS only to now face it yet again

This is a genuine appeal, these dogs are now under threat, please if anyone can help in any of the following ways do it without delay....

To donate cash please click here (www.dogsos.co.uk).
Donations of dog food needed.
Fosterers urgently needed (for up to 12 weeks but every effort will be made to move these dogs on asap).

Please try to support this very worthwhile cause, Doris Banham has rescued thousands of dogs from dire situations, and now the rescue itself needs rescuing urgently or dogs will die!

Pets@home is now trying to arrange a collection pitch at Iceland , Crystal peaks for next week, he will be taking cash and food donations for Doris Banham (full details to follow) he asks that now more than ever that you please please support him with this vital fund raising work....pets@home has given heart and soul to help this rescue and is devastated at this most recent news.

Please please help in any way that you possibly can, PM pets@home if there is anything you feel that you can do to help :help::help:

ah thats terrible moonbird :( Having met pets @ home the other week when he was collecting at Heeley, it's easy to see how passionate he is about his animals, and the rescue. I would love to foster but it's difficult as 1 of our dogs sleeps in the kitchen, the other sleeps in the lounge, and they are the only 2 rooms we have downstairs :(

I know how you feel I'm in the same position, if it was kittens maybe I could have fostered some but I just cannot take any more dogs...it makes me feel so useless

Thanks all , i have not been able to get in touch with iceland as yet, will post as soon as i do i have a collection at asda handsworth thurs/fri this week so we could make that a drop off point ,i am typing this message with tears in my eyes i can`t accept that dogs will die if we dont get urgent help , i am so proud of you guys for all youre support in the past & feel crap having to beg for help again but as moonbird said i have devoted my life to the Doris Banham sanctuary & they need all the help i can give so i must ask if you can help please do . This situation has arisen due to not having enough fundraisers & volunteers ,we are all working flat out with the dogs, many of which others wont take, that we have not been ableto give timeto get funds in (2,800 dogs saved this yr so far) this is already 500 more than the whole of last yr, i have 13 dogs at the moment but im considering taking on more but frightend it wont give me time to do collections . so please help if you can tell your friends etc . this is hurting me i cant stand the thought of dogs dieing soz

scary thing is 90% of those lovely dogs are SBT crosses and people will immediately be judging them :(

My SBT x is a big softie, though not tolerant of other dogs perfect in every other way (else I would consider fostering). If anyone is considering a pooch give these dogs a chance.

P@H - the dog at the top of 'I need a home 10' is a beagle - possibly a full beagle from hunting stock rather than show stock

If DB contact beagle welfare they'll help with rehoming

OK I'll try that...

I was just worried I was actually ordering something by mistake!

I don't mind it taking an extra £2.50 off me at all - just so long as it's going to the charity and not to Royal Mail!

DESPERATE HELP NEEDED – CHARITY IN FINANCIAL CRISIS
With your wonderful help and encouragement over the past three years we have managed to save the lives of over 8,000 lost and abandoned dogs and alleviate the pain and suffering of many many more. We have also funded over 950 life-saving veterinary operations/ treatments and provided basic veterinary care for countless dogs who have no-one but us to help them. However we have now over 100 pound dogs in boarding and the charity is under FATAL FINANCIAL STRAIN. With 7,900 passed through our care to new lives it is a fantastic achievement to have only 100 left in our care but I fear that we have become victims of our own success and the burden of cost of this is likely to bring down our little charity when we have so much left to achieve. Our reputation is at a very high point, our volunteers are increasing every day and we all have the belief and drive to carry on forever. We have long-term plans for cheaper boarding but need time to be able to put them into effect. At the moment because of the finances, like the dogs in the pounds, we do not have that time. Grants have been applied for but we cannot wait for them to come through. Desperately sadly also our boarding dogs will be put at risk if we cannot find funds to continue to pay their boarding.

We are at present about to make the heart-breaking decision to close our doors at least for the moment to new intake from the pounds and deal only with the dogs we have already saved to whom we owe our first allegiance. We have never done this before and we know that it will mean the deaths of thousands of abandoned dogs and the pain and suffering of many more for whom we cannot provide veterinary treatment when they are in the pounds. We are the only charity which does this. It will undo everything that we have achieved in changing attitudes in the pounds where staff now are beginning to value dogs that are definitely going to live at the end of the week and need care, walks, blankets, medication and extra food rather than ‘dead dogs walking’ to be given minimum requirements. Our compassion is really permeating the pound ethos

I am writing this in a desperate plea to ask you what to do. We have come this far with your help but we have so far to go – to continue to save lives and alleviate suffering in the pounds we need every bit of help you can give us. And we need it urgently or it will be too late.

Can you help us to keep going? With increased funds we would live to fight another day as it is our funds that are low - certainly not our enthusiasm and our belief in what we do.

To survive we need:
DONATIONS AS NEVER BEFORE
OFFERS OF FREE OR CHEAP BOARDING
ORGANISATION OF FUND RAISING
SPONSORSHIP OF KENNELS
HOMES FOR OUR DOGS
RESCUE SPACES FOR OUR DOGS

Please email me your thoughts at trudie.james@yahoo.co.uk or ring me on 0208 363 9634 and help me to make the most difficult decision of our charity’s life.

Lastly thank you for making possible the miracle we have achieved so far. Thousands of dogs who would have died are in homes healthy and happy because of us and that can never be taken away from us. Every little beating heart is alive because of us – we are indeed their last chance. Please help us never to have to give up on these little souls.

Love and thanks to you all from the forgotten dogs.

Trudie

Just read the message from dog sos, it is very sad that they are now in this position, but I do feel that the decision to not take in more dogs is the right one, and that they should concentrate on sorting out the ones that they already have in.

Don't get me wrong I feel desperately sad about the pound dogs that will suffer because of this, no I phrased that wrong they will not suffer they will die, that is terrible, but I do believe that the rescue needs to sort out its problems and responsibilities before taking on anything else, they owe that to the dogs they have in already.

SpeedDemon
17-10-2008, 11:59
yes i agree moonbird. As sad as it is, the ones already in their care have to be their main priority. We can weep for the dogs that can't be saved, but if the charity goes under, that will be many many more dogs with a death sentence. Hopefully this is just a glitch, and things will right themselves very soon. If only people would stop carelessly breeding. I would guess there are now probably more dogs than there are suitable homes for them, so unfortunately until people's attitudes to breeding for a quick buck change, it is inevitable that many dogs will have nowhere to go, and therefore end their days in kennels or in the vets :shakes:

How does fostering actually work - does the charity pay for food and vet bills, or do you pay that yourself, as a fosterer?

I foster Speed Demon and how it happends for me is i can claim back the food if i need too. All vet bills are agreed with the rescue and how it works for me is i pay them then claim it back.
I would imagine its the same or very similar with all the rescues.

well we have sort of fosterd him but we are supplying all his food ,bed, vets bills and anything else that he may need.had his tea and been a little walk across the fields with him and the other 2 now he,s flat out snoring and far**ng like a trooper.had his first set too with my other staffie x all teeth and growls over a chew stick but then thats going to happen for a while till the pecking order is sorted.will be sleeping down stairs tonight just to keep my eye on them.
it was a bit busy at treswell the phone never stopped ringing and it was full to the brim with some fab dogs but we only have room for one,we went for eric mainly becouse he doesnt like the place and it was stressing him out,and the fact he has been throught the wars a bit, broken tail, front tooth snapped off and a twisted face looks like he has had a good kicking or been run over at sometime and we intend making his golden years the best they can be.
please if anyone can help them out please do asap

It's truly admirable what you're trying to do Pets@Home, but I really do think that you need to take a little time to consider the situation. I know how hard it is to say no and when you're firing on all cylinders, you don't realise what is creeping up on you.

If you burn yourself out, you will be of little use to neither man nor beast and you already have an awful lot of dogs dependent on you being there for them. Being determined to save as many as possible can, sometimes, have a negative effect on the ones you already have to care for. Lots of welfare cases that we hear about came about because someone was very well meaning, but actually had too many animals and their well being was compromised.

Don't fall into the emotional trap of saving lives when you already have 16 dogs to care for. I honestly don't know how you cope with that many as it is.

I would offer to foster one for a few weeks as long as it would be ok with my barmy staffy X.

I have a decent garden and a cage for at night the only problem I see is I work full time and it would be in the kitchen for upto 5 hours at a time but my mum comes at dinner time and takes them to hers.

If you have more info let me know or if there are any yorkie types im sure I could persuade my mum to take one on permanantly

just to update everyone watching this thread this w/e you have donated £357.05 /70 tins of food3 bags off food, & some bedding so well done & thankyou.
Never before has our charity been so near to collapse and it has happened at a time when we have so many plans in the pipeline which would help us to save the lives and alleviate the suffering of so many more pound dogs. The charity is at a really high point in its achievements and reputation and new volunteers are joining us every day when they see for themselves what we are doing. In 3 years we have saved the lives of over 8,000 pound dogs and carried out life-saving veterinary treatment on 950+ and routine veterinary treatment on many many more. We have become the main rescue working on the front line to save the lives of pound dogs and the only one that pays their veterinary bills when they are suffering in the pounds. We have so much more to give and many many plans and our volunteers are fund-raising with all their might. We are at present renovating buildings to provide kennels run by volunteers in order to substantially reduce kennelling costs; we are negotiating sponsorship of blocks of kennels by organisations; we have applied for many grants; we are trialling kennel cough treatment in the pounds to reduce suffering and vets bills; we are pursuing avenues to raise public awareness of the plight of the pound dog; and many many more things which need time to come to full fruition.

However recently we have been inundated with dogs from the pounds and now have over 100 in commercial boarding kennels which otherwise would have died as rescue places could not be found in time. Commercial kennelling, even at the reduced rates we have negotiated, was never designed to be a long term solution but a stop gap which would allow us to keep hearts beating which we could not go back and save once they had been extinguished. It was meant to save lives whilst our plans were realised. The number of dogs we have had to save in recent weeks has meant that we have had to put too many dogs into the commercial boarding kennels and at this point in time we have no funds to pay this boarding past the end of this month. This has sadly caused us to close our doors to new pound dogs which means, without us, thousands will die and many more will suffer as we will be unable to carry out the veterinary work we currently undertake within the pounds. Pound ethos, which we have done so much to change, will revert to seeing the dogs, which will now die at the end of the week, as 'dead dogs walking' and their care and welfare will therefore suffer tremendously. We will not be able to continue our present policy of providing and funding our transport service to other rescues of the dogs they select from our pound lists enabling us to completely clear each pound list without any loss of life. Dog pounds trust us to come now and on the basis of this trust often are prepared to give the dogs more time which saves lives. If we stop we may never be able to reach this position again. If we cannot pay our boarding bills we will no longer be able to guarantee the safety of our boarding dogs and this is just too painful to contemplate. Without help our charity will have to fold before we have time for our plans to come to fruition. Having only 100 left in our care (and the majority not long-termers), when we have saved over 8,000, is quite an achievement but if we dont get help it will finish us.

Please please help us - it is breaking our hearts. We are still sent the pound lists and for the first time we cannot save them. We see their eyes and their paws up against the wire and we can't send our volunteers in to rescue them. For our volunteers to walk past their kennels and load the van with only the selected ones is not what our charity is all about. We want to rescue those that need us most because they have been left behind by other rescues. We need to buy more time to put our plans into effect. Please prove us to have been right to take in the old and the needy, the frightened and the abused, the unpopular and persecuted breeds - those that take longer to home but get there in the end.. The vast majority turn out to be loving dogs who just needed a chance. We so want to give them that time and chance but money has defeated us. Doing what we do is a very difficult and distressing job - we will never again be the people we were before before we witnessed all this suffering - we are changed forever. But we still have all the heart to keep on simply because they need us. If we feel as we do how on earth do the dogs feel - at the whim of whoever wants to manipulate and abuse them. Just like the pound dogs we need time to bring our plans and dreams to fruition so that we can serve their cause even more.

What we need is:

Donations to keep us operating

Every rescue who cares about what we do to take one of our dogs out of boarding - they are pictured on our web www.dogsos.co.uk If you can all fit in at least one - it will save us - 100 in our boarding is going to finish us.

Sponsorship of a kennel for dogs in boarding

Homes and fosterers for our dogs in boarding

For the sake of the forgotten dogs please please help us to keep going. With increased funds and less dogs in commercial boarding we would live to fight another day - it is only our funds that are low not our enthusiasm and belief in what we do.

M new mobile instead of the old mobile is 07597049231 and my landline as well 0208 363 9634. Email trudie.james@yahoo.co.uk
I do hope you can help - it is very very desperate - won't be here next month unless I can do something.
Some of the commercial kennels our charity's dogs are in will ultimately be very at risk if I can't pay the bills as they may just hand them into the pounds where they started.

Thank you so much

pets@home have you posted an appeal on dogpages. There are many rescues on there up and down the country who will help each other out in dire times.

I would definately post an appeal in "dog chatter". You are sure to get some help for places either in rescue or foster or permanent and also cash donations.

Did you see any that were ok with cats and other dogs in there? I've looked on the website but only one ad says ok with cats and that old girl is already being fostered. I'd be willing to foster one but must put my own dog and cat first so must be ok with other animals :)

I posted on Dog pages but I'm afraid that rules and forum politics got in the way and it was closed the next day, but there was lots of interest and offers of help, the thread was locked but allowed to remain.

Dog pages have requested that a representative from Doris Banham join and liaise with them about the best way forward, and I know that contact has been made with DB, I hope now that someone will pick up on this as I have started the ball rolling for them by having a good talk to the admin of the site, as Gemima has said this would be a very very good site to have on side!

Do you mean DP Gemima? it was looking really good on the thread its a pity that it got closed, that is the kind of audience that DB need to be aiming to reach, SF is great but we are comparatively few and a bit limited really.

Yes it could be really promising DP can do a lot, and if you go about things the right way they are very helpful, I got permission to post on behalf of C.A.T.S quite easily, you just have to ask and use the right channels.

just received this from Trudie

There is now light at the end of the tunnel- its small and we still need masses of help- but we see light
We are working round the clock to move our boarding dogs to rescues and homes and have so far moved 40 of them. Your financial support has allowed us to pay the majority of outstanding veterinary and boarding bills and is really keeping us afloat for the moment at least. We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for that from us all and the forgotten dogs More volunteers are coming in every day and fund-raising events are being planned by people who we didn・t even know knew of our work. Your belief is us has given us all such strength. We have a long way to go but I really now believe that together we can make it and get back into the pounds again to help the dogs that are being left behind. The death row dogs in the pounds need us today but for the moment we cannot help them ・ I just hope we will be able to soon. It is so heart-breaking to see the pictures of the dogs on the destruction lists with their paws up against the wire and we long to be able to drive up and save them as we used to. However every single dog at present in our boarding kennels was in that position. We have never taken a dog ourselves without an exhaustive search for a rescue place for it elsewhere. Every single dog in our boarding kennels would now be dead without us so it is not possible to regret having saved the lives of any of them. Now however they must move on to homes and rescues for us to save more. We are at present putting into action our plans for cheaper kennelling and sponsorship of kennels and have the possibility of a piece of land where we can have some kennels of our own run by our volunteers. Although we are not taking in any new dogs ourselves our vans and drivers are being used to transport pound dogs to other rescues provided the cost of the diesel can be raised by others. Our new van purchased through your generosity is having its final adaptations done and will be ready next week. Whatever happens this van will be available to save the lives of pound dogs ・ I just hope that we will be up and running to direct its use. We are exploring all sorts of avenues to highlight the plight of the pound dog and obtain help for the work we are doing. If anyone has any ideas please contact us. We will try anything. If we can survive to bring our plans to fruition we will be able to help even more dogs abandoned to die in the pounds in the future. PLEASE PLEASE KEEP ON SUPPORTING AND BELIEVING IN US AND TOGETHER FOR THE SAKE OF THE FORGOTTEN DOGS WE WILL MAKE IT. WE HAVE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN THE EXTRA TIME YOUR DONATIONS HAVE BOUGHT US ・ THERE IS STILL A LONG WAY TO GO BUT WITH YOUR CONTINUED HELP WE NOW BELIEVE THAT WE WILL GET THERE. With much gratitude from us all and the forgotten dogs .Trudie

I have only just found this thread, But would first like to say Well done for all the marvellous work that you do helping these dogs!! Where are you? Can we come to have a look at the dogs? Me and my hubby were only saying the other week that we would like another dog after the loss of ours a few years ago. The only thing is that we now have a lovely cat and are not sure how she would be with a dog.
