Right so here go's ive got a ticket today, and if i had been a naughty girl then i wouldnt have minded! I would have just thought it was funny-i would have been in the wrong anyway.

So parked today on "victoria road" just around collegiate cresent uni, i parked at 9.30 and so had 4 hours to return (1.30pm) i came back at 12.15 and slap bang my first ever ticket!

Ive only had my first very own car for about 3 weeks!

So it says that i didnt have a residents permit, but the sign said that i could have either 4 hours or constant parking with a permit, 4 hours free sounded like a baragin to me!

Now im thinking about £10 an hour has turned out to be the most expensive day for me!

Has any one got any sensible suggestions, experiences, or something worse, and that might make me feel as though i am actually lucky, suppose the fine could have been more!!

Anyone won the lottery and want to pay it! Ha ha!

Ive rang the council by the way and they said that it has to be made in writting and then they will make assessment. (im wondering if they ever actually let people off!)

i know a few people who have contested fines even when they knew they would get a fine if they parked there and they got let off.. sometimes its easier and less money to let you off than force you to pay, be consistent in contesting it
good luck:thumbsup:

I once parked in the Uni's car park and paid my dues. Jessops had to keep me in all day as I had a miscarriage while in there. I told the hospital I could see I had a parking ticket and they wrote me a letter of explanation. I sent it to the appropriate place and they said............knickers! we want £100 now!!!!!

This took me over 1 year to sort out. Eventually someone from the Uni called me and sorted the problem out for me by demanding that the parking services dropped the fine.

So have you misread the sign or has Mr or Mrs Traffic Warden...????

If they have issued the ticket in error surely it can easily be withdrawn there shouldn't be an issue over contesting it if the traffic warden made a mistake!!

well im sure that the traffic warden has because i have parked there before, but then again i could be wrong. (lets hope for my sake im not!)

i am just thinking! i bet the warden is just assuming you parked there at 8am when all the parking rules come into place! which you did not but if you did it would be just over 4 hours.. that are so sneaky!

Was there a charge for the 4 hours though? It seems a bit odd that thye would let you have 4 hours free without anyway of recording the time you parked there.

Just found this, see page 19 and 20.

hey savbaby, you are onto something there!

I was at my mms for a funeral in scarborough on friday, and i just happened to mention to her that to me there seems to be no way of actually telling what time people arrived.

At my mums they have a little cardboard disk that they have to put in thw indow when they park (they have 2 hour streets) so that then the warden comes by they know how long hey have been there.

Also It was a street anyway, so there is not uni regulations etc, but thanks.

well you may all think im sad but im going back to uni at about 7pm ish tonight to get some work done, lets hope this isnt going to occur again!!!! now that would be bad luck!!

my MIL lives in that area and the wardens response is usually coz the residents have complained to them coz they haven't been round for a while.
i think they do one circuit to check the cars and when they return if any are still there they get a ticket.
like a private car park warden!! how the other half live!!

Definitely contest it - I live in a residents parking area, and frequently get tickets, even though I've got a permit. If you have a valid reason, then you normally get off

i would like to say you have a chance, but unless u really dont want to pay £40, rightly or not then it will take months of back and forth.

i got a ticket and was not parked where the warden said i was, after several letters it came down to my word against the wardens and i was told that they note where the car was for this very reason and they had no reason to believe he was lying. in the end i paid

I once got a parking ticket in Manchester - at 7.30 on a Sunday morning! Talk about keen traffic wardens!

I got the parking ticket because I was allegedly parked in a bay that had been temporarily closed. We took a photograph of the sign, which listed the bays that had been closed. I photocopied the parking ticket, which clearly showed that I was parked in a bay that had not been closed, and sent it off to Manchester.

Nine months later, numerous phone calls and umpteen letters, I had receievd no satisfaction. The fine had also increased due to non-payment.

I wrote to the local government ombudsman, and within a week received an apology, cancellation of the fine, and a small sum in compensation for the cost of my calls/postage.

If you are absolutely sure you have read the parking sign correctly, then do as matsalleh suggested, and what I did in Manchester. Take a photograph, and write to the address on the parking ticket with an explanation as to why you should not have received this ticket. Keep a copy of all correspondence. Be prepared to have a long battle if necessary.

Don't stand for it! The jobsworth probably gets a bonus for "doing" so many cars an hour/a day, so don't let them get away with it!

Victoria Road is the road opposite the SHU learning centre at the Ecclesall Road end of Collegiate Crescent isn't it?

I study up there and whilst I haven't received a fine, a friend of mine has for parking on that road.

The day after their fine, there was a different warden on duty who (as this one looked a lot more friendly!) they asked about the ticket as their set of circumstances was the same as yours; they parked where the signs appear to indicate that upto 4 hours is fine.

The second and friendlier warden told them that there is indeed 4 hours free parking along that side of the road, however there is a point at which this becomes residents only, I think it is outside a house but I can't remember.

Anyway, the warden said that the sign, whilst difficult to decipher, is there and that it is the driver's fault not the council for the sign basically.

My friend appealed and I'm pretty certain I don't recall them telling me that it was quashed.

On the other hand I got a fine about 18 months ago in the city centre even though I did have a ticket.

The ticket had fallen down so I sent them a copy and a letter telling them it wasn't my fault they had unsticky glue and it was cancelled. So they do quash some of them!

Good Luck either way, I know that parking around Collegiate Crescent is a nightmare

Hi

I got a parking ticket in Stoke (United away match this season). Apparantly we had parked on double yellow lines. We hadn't, we were in a layby and the lines stopped as they went in to the layby - but we got a ticket.

I rang to ask why i'd got a ticket, and asked if they'd got photographic evidence. She confirmed we were on double yellows, but no they didn't have photgraphic evidence and apparantly that goes in your favour!

Anyway - we had to write in to contest the ticket - which we did, 2 days later we got a very nicely worded apologetic letter back saying the ticket shouldn't have been issued!

Nice result! Apparantly, whilst a ticket is being contested the fine is frozen, if we had lost the appeal, we still would've had 14 days to pay the original fine (£30.00), before it went up to £60.00.

Contest yours in writing, nicely worded of course, and keep copies.

If the place you parked is the same as the one in the document above then the free 4 hours has to be pre arranged with a special pass.
