View Full Version : New Look BBC Weather
:gag: I felt a little sea sick watching the new look weather on BBC1 today, the camera zooms around the UK moving from Scotland down through England then over to Wales and Ireland then back again  What do you think of the new look for the weather?
I think its rubbish. They have blatantly tried to copy Sky News, but they havent done a great job...
Ousetunes 16-05-2005, 14:01 One thing hasn't changed: their incredible ability to get their forecasts wrong.
I preferred to old symbols. Nice and simple, with no added faff. Whenever I needed to check the weather it was always the beeb's forecast that I'd tune in to watch. Updating for the sake of it, if you ask me - much like the latest mobile phones becoming increasingly faff-enabled.
I heard this was about to happen. I bet you can't see the weather for the graphics now
A no-doubt expensive change to the weather presentation that will almost certainly be reversed within, oh... say a year!
So in the meantime we can enjoy a 3D flyover of how miserable our summer is turning out to be!
(I'll find this thread when they change back and gloat!!)
I'm not a fan, they should keep the symbols and leave the graphics on BBCi if people want to access them.
Hope they change it back sooner rather than later.

GF said exactly the same to me this morning.

Can't wait.
It just came across as a mess, so I swithced to Sky News & watched that instead of BBC News.
HarrietStar 17-05-2005, 08:33 lol someone's gone mad with the GIS! I like the idea of making the map show more 'physical' features rather than just symbols, but they haven't done it very well - the location of towns/cities isn't very clear and the graphics and colours/real rain pictures make the forecast less clear.
plus, they did an overall UK outlook for the day yesterday morning with London, Glasgow, Belfast and Cardiff - that's just great if you live in Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield Newcastle, York or Hull isn't it?!
warriormonk 17-05-2005, 08:41 Bring back the magnetic symbols
.....and Bert Foord!!

That was exactly our reaction:gag: I just found it very confusing. I understand that the regional presenters like Paul Hudson, who used to do their own charts based on local knowledge as well as the national data, now have to use the same forecast, so no more placename puzzles etc either! Bring back the magnetic symbols that slid off from time to time, or even the hand-drawn weather charts of old, now that's really going back:thumbsup:

I agree, I wonder if there is a site on which you can complain about the new setup?
Tra Da!

(I have left my own complaint. Rant Rant Rant)!
They (The Met Office - in association with Mrs Beeb) have already started to respond to the country's distaste for the new weather foecast:
"The BBC will introduce a change to the perspective of its new 3D weather map after carefully assessing feedback from viewers.
The move follows comments from viewers that the map gave too much prominence to the southern part of the country.
The change to the 'tilt' of the map will allow viewers to see more of the North of England and Scotland.
Andrew Lane, BBC Weather Manager, said: "We are proud of the new weather map - it is very flexible, and we believe that it provides the clarity and realism that viewers want.
"However, we have always made it clear that we listen to our audiences and our complaints system has had a role in helping us to understand our audiences' concerns."
He added: "The global look of the map naturally makes the bottom of the map appear slightly larger, but we now recognise that the perspective needs changing, and are responding."
The new perspective weather map will be in use from Saturday 28 May across the BBC."
(From BBC Website).
Maybe if we keep up the pressure (no'isobar' pun intended); we can get our usual weather back?
Am I alone in thinking that the new colour for British Isles (i.e Greyish Brown), makes the weather look more like a presentation of Iraq (or other sunburnt land mass)?
Grantham 29-05-2005, 00:10 Hi,
This BBC Weather thing is going to to blow up in their faces! Waste of money and a waste of time - just a quick dash through Google shows you that even the Winnipeg Sun newspaper website is carry news of the BBC's loss of credibility.
The design is desperately bad and the content feeble. The UK looks like something from '1984'.............
This is one of the sites having a good banter about it all.

rothschild 29-05-2005, 00:40 The new weather map makes it look as if we are in the "sahara"........all muddy/sandy colours! I thought the deeper muddy browns signified higher temperatures.....now I find out it signifies clouds! Clouds aren't dark brown! Ah well.......bring back the pale yellows through to the reds........that tells us how warm it is going to be. I hate the new BBC weather forcasts! AND.......I miss small Pauls little "village" names that we could all relate to.
This (http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=4604940) criticism was made on the BBC Weather Forum website by some-one who really knows what they are talking about.
Guess what?
It was removed.
I'm going to go out on a limb here, and probably suffer the consequences... but... I like it.
I cant follow the new pan and tilt weather - my brain cell cant watch the clock in bottom right of the screen and follow that whilst watching the world moving - makes me sea sick ! And as for working out where places are at the same time - no chance !
Thankfully they stilll have symbols on the website
http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/ukweather/
although the 'summary' icons are way too confusing, simply because there are so many of the damned things - have a look here and see what I mean

Grantham 29-05-2005, 21:31 Hi Pilon,
You should probably go the the BBC message board for the weather department or write to the Director General - they REALLY need your support.
They might even give you a medal..........
Each to their own, myself I think it is dismal

In some mysterious B.BC. way , this New Look may be connected to the imminent Global Warming we've all been warned about.
If the pundits did get it wrong and it turns out to be another typical , wet , chilly , windy British summer , they'll somehow blame it on the new graphics.
Don't get complacement , though ; palm trees will soon be growing in Aberdeen and London under two feet of water within 5 years, graphics or no graphics !
Yodameister 30-05-2005, 12:34 I think what this has shown me is that I never watch the weather forecast on TV because I still haven't seen the new style graphics.
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains Brown?
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's Brown and pleasant land.
The new look weather forcast is a little less annoying then it first started but only just.
Grantham 31-05-2005, 12:41 ...................could this Brown thing be an omen for the future???
Captain_Scarlet 01-06-2005, 05:54 Not impressed with the map... It's really beige...
I phoned Look North, and the lady kinda really didn't care ... It's like; get used to it !
The cheek !
Grantham 01-06-2005, 11:48 ....here is the reply from BBC HQ to our 'well reasoned and argued letter' regarding the 'beige thing'....
I think that the woman from 'Look North' must work part-time in London!!!

Well, they obviously aren't that bothered.
If you look at the BBC Weather Forum (http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/h2/h2.cgi?state=threads&board=weather.talkweather&) you will see that most members are livid about the changes. More than that, they are angry about the total lack of attention they are receiving from the people who have created this change.
I have now fallen into a routine of watching the BBC weather despite the awful changes. I really detest the flyovers, the colours, the lack of detail and the inaccuracy. I have also picked up on the fact that some presenters hate the changes too, but are being forced to use the flyovers (look for the presenters that use it as a minimum before returning to the map.
Have you noticed?
Am I obsessing? Is our BBC weather not really that important?
