View Full Version : Highcliffe Pub - My oh my, what a dump it's become!

Had the 'pleasure' of visiting The Highcliffe pub in Greystones this Sunday (16th May). This once decent pub has been reduced to a right dive...

My brother had a party in the function room for one of his son's birthday. He might as well have had it in his own garage. The whole place is filthy, unkempt and should have a doormat with the inscription: Kindly Wipe Your Feet On The Way Out.

Furthermore, the lady behind the bar who I assume to be the landlady/proprietor gave the impression that the last thing she needed was customers. She was more interested in her conversation with two regulars propping up the end of the bar.

The decor is shabby, the carpets and seating sticky. Yet what I can't understand is that the place used to be great. The rear room (now the function room) used to have a video juke-box and two or three pool tables. It was a lively place to go, with a large, young (maybe too young?) clientel.

So folks, what happened to this place?

The Highcliffe is now closed and will be re-opening on November 4th. It's been taken over by Thornbridge Brewery who want to bring the once thriving local back to life and make it the social and focal centre of the Greystones community, hence the name change to The Greystones. Keep an eye on the local press for more details.

I was told a few weeks ago that Thornbridge had bought this.......You lucky people living up there.

Result! So good that a run-down pub will be back on its feet and run by people who have a bit of passion for pubs.

When the Highcliffe reopens in early November, there will be a strong emphasis on promoting and supporting live music, comedy and arts as well as local community projects. It was the most famous folk club in South Yorkshire in the 60's and 70's and Thornbridge are keen to see it become a popular music venue once again.

Ive always given the Highcliffe a miss, simply because I heard it was crap, and also I didnt fancy tackling Greystones road. I`ll be sure to give it a whirl though if bands and comedy are on it when re-opens.

Please, no drag acts.

Reading this with much interest! The Highcliffe was one of my regular watering holes when I still lived at Greystones and remember the pool tables and old video jukeboxes with affection. Even met my hubbie there. Not been back for around 16 years apart from some school reunion with a friend where I was horrified to find the pub had been divided into 2 and was completely devoid of any personality.

Shall await the re opening and venture from Woodseats for an evening.
Still wishing for a real ale pub there - but not going to hold my breath.
Thats another topic........

The Greystones website is updated with information on events etc and you know what, I think the pub is going to be quite good...

I used to live along the road, and probably went in there twice. I preferred to walk up to the Hammer and Pincers.

Mainly because it was a dump, and some of the unsavoury characters that used to frequent that I preferred to avoid.

I've had the misfortune of going upstairs in this pub when my mum had her 40th there.
I've seen abandoned houses in better state.

But, I'm happy to have a visit when it's revamped :D

Yeah, but if you read the post dated 01-10-2010 12:05, you'll find that the pub is re-opening.

So it's relevent...unlike your post.

Thornbridge don't brew lager, just ale. The set up at the Greystones will be all the cask ales on handpump will be Thornbridge then the keg products including lager will be well known premium brands from the Enterprise Inns list such as (I think) Peroni.

Although if you haven't tried the Thornbridge ales before why not give them a try and see if you like them? They do a good line in hoppy pale ales.

Since you like to talk to people in an impolite way, I will give you the same treatment.

I made the post because I was surprised to see the orignal post dated to 2005 and the next 2010. In most other forums that I have been to, they would request you make a new topic, instead of bringing up a dead thread.

You spelt relevant wrong.

The best thing is, is that I have "Relevance" spelt 3 times correctly and "Irrelevant" spelt correctly in my signature. It's very surprising to see that you have spelt it wrong.

If they do Peroni or similar then thats good.

Have tried those Benard lagers they serve in the Tap which was not to my taste at all in fact thought they tasted vile.

Great news, I only live about 400 yards away, so will be keen to start paying a visit now it's been run by Thornbridge.

On the downside (for non local visitors) the 81 bus service that runs up the hill has recently been 'downgraded' from 3-4 buses an hour to one an hour.

When it turns up.

My reply:
Hello, everybody.
I'm new to Sheffield, didn't know much about the place and its story, and just wished to thank and congratulate them, as I was happy to find a place like this. Went there last Friday for a concert. I confirm that it'd been refurbished with two different spaces now being arranged, the pub and the concert room behind it. They definitely put an accent on the live music and other art projects, and host at least four venues each week, inviting some well known as well as less acclaimed artists. I do not mention any detail and my opinion is just that of someone who landed there by pure coincidence. Check the aforementioned website for the gigs program and give it a try. Cheers.

Evenings and Sundays there is also the Stagecoach bus 88A which stops outside the pub's front door every half hour.

As it stands now, I'm pleased to say you're quite right Andy C - when I originally posted, the 81 had just stopped serving Greystones Rd quite detrimentally - it was in fact due to Rounds news Shop opposite the Greystones pub getting a local petition together that resulted in the Stagecoach 88a service - just goes to show that 'ordinary people' can change stuff in their environment

Thanks for updating :)
