Just got back into the bike lark for summer - been away for too many years.

Can any local bikers recommend a place to go for a decent set of tyres, (preferably somewhere in the North of Sheffield - although have bike will travel), an idea of price, which brand would be suitable for commuting to work on and are there any good bike clubs around Sheffield???

also; I noticed a bike meet at the Pheasant on the Lane Top last year?

I built up an old Suzuki from a selection of boxes a couple of years ago. The tyres it came with were OK for a while, but the time has come to locate some that will hopefully satisfy the tester next month. I have tried the usual tyre dealers only to be met with mild disinterest when they find out it not a modern superbike with fancy alloy wheels and a zillion horsepower. I eventually went back to where I started looking, try Syd Smith at Darnall, not too far from North Sheffield. Ask for Glyn, he has most sizes in or can get them quickly, at not bad prices compared to what I have been quoted.

Best thing to do is to phone around. Other thing is try mail order http://www.busters-accessories.co.uk/ http://www.mandp.co.uk/home.aspx. Remember you will have to pay for fitting though. What bike do you have? What type of riding do you do ie is it only commuting or do you do any weekend blasts/ trackdays etc? for commuting I'd reccomend bridgestone BT 020. they work very well in wet or dry and grip well even when cold. they last long enough (I've had 6000 miles out of the back) and i'd reccomend ultraseal puncture seal stuff. As for bike meets, matlock bath on a sun and sherburn in elmet on a wed. also scarcliffe on a tues if i remember rightly. Nick.

I'd recommend NATIONAL TYRES in Barnsley centre. Price of tyres is very competetive and fitting is the cheapest I've found in years.
Tel 0800281600 for tyre info/availability. (Good stocks)
You can take your wheels in loose but for what they charge, enjoy the ride and save getting your hands dirty.

Also; just wondered what is the average mileage that tyres last for. The ones on the bike I have just bought have done around 5,500 commuter miles?

Thanks guys for the replies so far!

Depends on your throttle and braking technique combined with what compound rubber you choose to shod your wheels (hard/medium/soft/dual etc).
Choose a soft compound on a large cc machine then ride like a racer and you will be lucky to cover 2k on a rear.
