I recently posted some of my favourite films on another thread, one of them being the Dam Busters. Apparently they are going to remake this classic. I am not a fan of remakes, Psycho (Psycho) Alexander (Alexander The Great) and 300 (The 300 Spartans) spring to mind, I prefer the originals. And so I got to thinking who will they cast as the Richard Todd and Michael Redgrave characters to do justice to the roles, also what modern day actors could do justice to the characters in my other favourite films if remade.
The Dam Busters
Guy Gibson - Originally Richard Todd - Possible Jeremy Northam
Barnes Wallace - Originally Michael Redgrave - Possible Liam Neeson
The Searchers
Ethan Edwards - Originally John Wayne - Possible Who could fill Wayne's boots
Angels With Dirty Faces
Rocky Sullivan - Originally James Cagney - Possible No Contenders
Ice Cold In Alex
Captain Anson - Originally John Mills - Possible Jude Law
Sister Murdoch - Originally Sylvia Syms - Possible Catherine Zeta-Jones
Zulu
Colour Sergeant Bourne - Originally Nigel Green Possible Sean Bean
Private Hook - Originally James Booth - Possible Clive Owen
How Green Was My Valley
Angharad - Originally Maureen O'Hara - Possible Catherine Zeta-jones
Mr Gruffydd - Originally Walter Pidgeon - Possible Ioan Gruffudd
Gwilym - Originally Donald Crisp - Possible Anthony Hopkins
I don't think any modern day actors could surpass the originals, this may be an age thing or a mind set, as in my minds eye I always see Alastair Sim as Scrooge, Gregory Peck As Captain Ahab, Errol Flynn as Robin Hood and Basil Rathbone is Holmes. Lets hear some comments on any of the above and which Actor/Actress is the perfect film character in your minds eye.
