bulldog D 25-08-2004, 22:53 I can recall playing on ten town as a kid on my way to visit family who still lived on the Woodthorpe estate at that time. Although I'd been briefed that it was frequented by a rough lot!
but I survived.
Not bad when you consider that my forebears had escaped the deprivation of the 1920's slum clearances to live on the Woodthorpe estate where each house had it's own toilet.
Admittedly it was on the other side of the porch!
I am wife of Owdlad and I was born & bred on Woodthorpe. I lived on Mosborough Road can remember most of the name mentioned on this site along with many more,Murdocks,Deakins,Coopers to name but a few I spent a very happy childhood in and around the Woodthorpe.
i remember ten town,i used to live up the road from it on holbrook road, went to woodthorpe school any one remember mr sallis,he used to stand on a chair to cane you and always called you a pikehand.whatever that may be....in the winter we used to sledge from st theresas all the way down the field to the spring wood...my first pint was in the high noon pub.years ago but seems like yesterday...cheers..a tyrrell

stephen spooner? would that have been johns brother?lived opposite high noon pub.pauline eaton,s name rings a bell,i think i was in her brothers class, his name was michael, lived just off kilvington road, was mr cartwright there when you were at school? and mr cliff, the science teacher ? he was evil, used to use acid on girls nails to remove nail varnish, carried his cane up his sleeve when on yard duty.
mr frost, the head master,he wore a cloak and mortar board hat, very eccentric for a secondary modern school that didnt have a uniform when i was there.
i remember,roger mitchell,susan boulding,niel nicholson,susan tevendale,eileen turner,danny coulton,tony padget and many more from the sixties
summer1955 23-06-2005, 07:07 stephen spooner did live near the high noon. dont know his brother only younger sister michelle.pauline eatons brother was david and they lived hastilar rd south. the only nicholson i remember was alan he was in the year above me at school.the other names dont ring a bell or the teachers. i remember a mr smith he was my teacher when i first went to woodthorpe senior but he left after my 1st year. i usd to live nodder rd.
maybe a bit before your time,i left in 65,your mum and dad might know them,i know nodder road, changed a bit since i was up there, do you remember the police box near the shops? my mate mick renshaw used to live opposite.
our teachers were sallis, cartwright, jennings, hazelwood, knight, cliffe ,barrett, can,t recall any women staff though, long time ago now, memory fades but i did enjoy going to woodthorpe, went right through from the nursery to the seniors only wagged one day in all that time and my mum found out and beat me with the wellies i was wearing.......
summer1955 23-06-2005, 09:17 65 was a bit before my time i was 10 then i went to woodthorpe right through infants juniors but left seniors when 13 to go to hurlfield.i remember police box. renshaws ring a bell but cant remember names did he have another brother and 2 sisters brother used to work with steve wilson was it first house on nodder after shops. i lived at top of nodder a few doors away from ten town.it was great on woodthorpe when i was young left in 1975 returned in 1980 while 1986 on fishponds road west at back of shop.

Hey Courtney our Debs has still not come over told you so LOL
Sam are you there talk to U.T.
I remember the ravine at the back of St Theresas School, I can remember the air vents from the pit up on the hill where the then new woodthorpe was built. I think that pigeons were kept up there also as there was a fence erected made all out of doors.
I also remember Pit Hill on Pit lane with the large pond at the foot. The area around the school (which I attended from four years old to fifteen ) was a beautiful place the ravine with its stream was a place of peace.
I wonder what fool decided to fill it all in and make a flat boring view, progress? I dont think so.
We could stand looking over towards Woodthorpe and you could see the fields full of corn and barley, all gone now.
I cant remember the name of the old man that had the orchard just up Pit lane from the school, he was always chasing kids who were after his apples.

Sorry but Im afraid I dont, at that time I was only between twelve and fourteen and I wasnt interested in the things that I hold dear now, like Sheffields old buildings and the areas that I played on when I was at School. I think I have a photo of the Hall in a book I could send it if you havent got one.
Lazarus you asked if my mum was called Mary did you know her.??
I may have got the wrong girl, I think the one I knew was called Margaret and came from Ireland when she was around thirteen years old. Sorry.

What was Tin Town? Was it the adventure playground in the ravine?
I lived in Richmond but went to Woodthorpe school, both infants' and juniors' between 1944 and 1950 when I went on to grammar school. I can even remember having to sit in the air raid shelters on several occasions. I can remember catching a bus to the infants' at Woodthorpe terminus and it cost a ha'penny. A week's school dinners cost two bob and we had to take a tanner to put in our National Savings Bank book. Ah such sweet memories although, like most other kids, I had no dad for six years as he was away at war in the RAF.
I have looked for old school friends on Friends Reunited but could find none at Woodthorpe although I found several at Nether Edge Grammar.

I remember Mr Lyons at the baths. I also remember the tentown i used to be on there every day from the age of 7. I also remember Carl Chapman, he was my boss until july of last year when he finally retired, but I still keep in touch and he would really like a tentown reunion to catch up with a lot of those who used to go on tentown. He always asks if I still see people and remembers most of the names and nicknames and has a lot of photos from then. If anyone is interested in seeing him again let me know and I will arrange it.

Everyone was frightened of Mr Lyons weren't they. I left Woodthorpe July 1968, I was into 4th year in Sept 68 but left to go to Brook so I could stay one to 5th year and do exams, my class teacher in the 3rd year was Mr Monahan he was a brill teacher. Apart from those already mentioned there was Mr Burgin,Miss Wiles,Mrs Roberts,Mr Mellor,Miss(Ithink)Geldest sad as I am I have all their autographs as well as most of the people in the same year as me.

You crawly bumlick :P
Now now just because you didn't like school No 1 it doesn't mean you have to revert to name calling.
As a new member to the Sheffield Forum, I came across this website accidentally and have throughly enjoyed reading about teachers/pupils from Woodthorpe School. Many names I too remember ... Mr Sallis, Mr Jennings, Miss Clark (PE teacher) and of course, Mr Frost. I also remember a student teacher called Miss Crisp; she had no control over our class (or any other as I recall) and we must have made her life a misery. Mr Lyons, the swimming coach was a wonderful man and during one of my few visits back to Sheffield, was shocked to discover the swimming pool no longer exists! I was part of the swimming team comprising of Nancy Smith, Margaret Jones, Christine Wilson and myself, Diane Turner in the late 1950's.

Ten Town Adventure Ppayground was set up in 1965. It was the brainchild of a scouse by the name of Terry Page. I and a guy called Steve Hall who lived on Woodrove Close, along with Terry Page started the Ten Town adventure playground. The area was fenced and we were donated a caravan originally. Old wood and packing cases were collected for the localkids to build dens. Telegraph poles were erected and a rope slide was made there was also a sandpit. We had numerous sponcerd events to get money so that we could make life a little more interesting for the kids. I also know the Underhays as my wife ,also from a large family, was brought up with them.:)

I was part of the swimming team comprising of Nancy Smith, Margaret Jones, Christine Wilson and myself, Diane Turner in the late 1950's.are you related to eileen turner? she was in the swimming team with me in the mid 60's,i think she lived on kilvington road

Ta Mo
I went to Prince Edwards in the 50s and 60s and well remember walking in a long snake with the rest of my class across Pit Field to get to Woodthorpe swimming baths. We went on our own, with no teacher to escort us and we all arrived at the baths on time and unmolested.
Our teacher was Miss Pilgrim and I remember she always used to take 2 or 3 children in her car to the baths. I remember we used to hang back in class as the rest set off in the hope that she`d pick us to go in the car with her.

lovelylinda 13-02-2011, 16:42 Anyone remember the Murdochs
I remember a Murdoch with whom I became quite pally in the mid 1950's but I can't recall his christian name. He was a couple of years older than me, which would make him about 73 or 74 now. If someone was to come up with a name, I am sure I would recognise it.
Mike
lovelylinda 14-02-2011, 08:53 would it be Tony
Hi Lovelylinda,
After all that, I am not sure - well it is 50 odd years since we last met. I moved away from Richmond in 1959. We often chatted on the no. 32 bus and I think he used to get off at the stop between the Woodthorpe shopping centre and the terminus on Richmond Road (by the fishpond).
