After reading all about it and seeing the movies . . . do you think you could actually live here?

Looking at it, it'd be pretty cool but I'm far too much of a coward!

Only that this family were gunned down in their sleep by their oldest son, who said 'Voices' told him to do it.

And the next family to live there, the Lutz's, only lasted 28 days after a load of scary stuff happened to them.

So is it a film or a true story...or a film based on a true story? And if so, what film is it???

this was a quality film, and i found it really funny in parts (although i think it was meant to be scary)

il be honest, the house looked great, seemed really good, but if some of the stuff that happened to them happened to me, id be straight out

and msbehavin the film is THE AMITYVILLE HORROR

Allegedly, the bit about the priest blessing the house is true - when he starts his prayers the room starts to fill with flies and he hears a horrible loud voice shout 'Get out!'. :o

The 2005 version of the film is ace! loved it - very, very scary.

Thank you Lotti and Lestat. Have just spent the past few minutes reading all about it on various web sites from Lestats Link (and by putting Ronald Defeo in Google).

Have obviously heard of it, but not realising it was based on a true story and thinking it 'just another Hollywood Horror' have not actually seen it.

This will be remedied forthwith. Am off to Blockbuster today to rent it. Do I need company or will I be ok watching it on my own?

PS 11 year old daughter watching it with me is not an option as she will either;

a) watch it then spend the rest of the night in MY bed
b) watch it then have nightmares and worry about it all for the next few weeks
c) spend the whole of the film closely examining the pattern on the cushion in front of her face and gripping the dog.

So.....

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase 'reposessed house'. :)

I'd live there! I think the murders happened but the ghosts were made up....but I wouldn't tell the tourists that who paid me a small fortune to look round it.

Your'e right Sheff, i don't live far from there themurders did happen, but the ghost stories are for the tourists, books, vidios ect, they made a ton of money with those fake stories, but some people like to belive it, so let them spend their money, no harm done.

But the film bills it as a 'true' story. Surely this is some sort of violation of trade description?

The film says 'Based' on a true story . . so it could mean either the story of the Defoe murders or the fact that the Lutz's only stayed for 28 days.

The thing is though - Why did the Lutz family only stay for 28 days when it was their dream house? It was where they had decided to settle for life, surely something must have happened to make them move out so quickly.:suspect:

The link given on the previous page makes out that the Lutzs were told to make the story up to help DeFoe's defence.

Also, after such a high-profile murder case, and an author offering you big bucks to tell the story of the 'haunted house', wouldn't you make it all up?

Am I right in thinking that the house had been around for at least a couple of hundred years prior to the murders. How come the previous occupants weren't affected?

im not sure that was the case, i think it was vacant for a long time before the murders took place..

Amityville doesn't seem all that scary now, not when you compare it to this .... http://www.bigbrother.survivor-online.co.uk/images/bb5/house.jpg :P

I would live there,no problem. The house is unrecognisable now, the dutch windows have been replaced etc. I think the houses were re-numbered as well to put tourists off the track.

The murders did happen of course, but I am rather sceptical about the hauntings. Apparantly the Lutz family were in alot of debt, and could barely afford the mortgage. That said, they couldn't possibly have envisaged just how big their story would become.

The current occupents have not experienced any paranormal goings on.

I would seriously love to give that house a try out, just to see if there is anything in it :hihi:
