View Full Version : [Rant] Death of TV viewership, ads and Sponsorships

I used to watch a lot of TV when i was younger.

Almost 4 hours a day at times, mostly after school hours, obviously.

But over the years,my TV Viewing habits have declined.

They've almost dropped off the map totally for a few reasons...

1 - Reality shows. - Worst programming to ever come out.....

People eating bugs,etc...... Its the most disgusting/cheapest crap they could fill the airwaves with........

2 - On Screen clutter. It started with network bugs. Then the TVY7+ ratings. After that came text scrolls, pop ups telling you what show you are currently watching (just in case you where dumb enough not to figure it out),on screen animated advertisements that cover up a 1/3rd of the picture if you where lucky for the show coming up next.

This is the most disgusting part of commercial TV today.... There is no point watching anything worthy on a standard channel anymore BECAUSE OF ALL THIS CRAP ON THE SCREEN DURING THE SHOW!!!!

It is utterly disgusting!! (That plus they edit so much out of movies on a standard channel its not worth it)

So worried about KIDS seeing something......

I have an idea.....

TAKE AWAY THESE STUPID CRAP/HORRIBLE GAMES THAT ARE MADE TODAY AND THAT THEY PLAY DAILY (AFFECTING THIER MINDS) THEN WE CAN START TALKING!!!!!!!

3 - In Product Advertising. As if an hour show being reduced to almost 41 minutes isnt bad enough, now they apparently have shows being sponsored by companies who want their product front and center. (WAY TOO MUCH SPAM IN THE USA,ITS TOTALLY SICKENING)

4 - Corporate Sponsor ships. Do these really work? Does anyone care if a half time report is sponsored by Visa? Does the logo plastered all over no less than 9 plasma screens really make you say,'gee,I've gotta switch card companies today..'?

All this and more has caused me to really dislike TV over the last 6 years or so....

Almost nothing but garbage on TV today and its sickening...

Im ready to explode i have so much anger because of things today!!!

Just curious if anyone is feeling the same way?

Excellent rant, even with its US perspective, and I was with you until you mentioned the games (not sure of the relevance of its interjection there).

Incessant ad breaks are the reason I record the few things I do watch on TV. Add to that the screen clutter and you have the reasons why I prefer to watch on DVD, where possible, anything I really want to watch and enjoy.

My personal gripe is the butchering of the lovely Barrington Pheloung Inspector Morse credits music. Yes, I know, but stick with me. The original broadcasts - and the early repeats - had it in all its glory. These days, not only do the credits roll up the screen at such a pace that not only can you hardly read them, but entire chunks of the score are missing! And don't get me started on talking over the credits while pushing them into a tiny little box while they play a clip of what ever crap is coming next  :hihi: .

That's just reminded me. Inspector Morse was the first programme I remember having sponsorship. 'Inspector Morse, sponsored by Beamish Stout' from around 1992ish. God knows how and why that's stuck in my head :hihi: .

The fact that despite having hundreds of channels to choose from, there is nothing worth watching is the reason why I hardly turn the goggle-box on.

Commercial breaks are too frequent and always, always louder than the programmes they slice up.

No wonder they're struggling for advertising. It was much much better when there were three channels.

The radio, generally, wins hands down these days (especially non-commercial).

The "this programme is sponsored by" is quite handy really for fast forwarding through commercial breaks. I have trouble watching football these days due to the animated ad hordings around the sides of the pitch.
My biggest bugbear at the moment is the way programmes decide to show you clips of the episode before it has started. Anybody with half a brain can pretty much guess how things turn out at the end.

Advertising is the reason Noel Edmonds is wrong to not pay his TV licence.

It's tremendous value for 5 free TV channels with no advertising plus 9 or so radio stations.

Agreed that the BBC's radio network is worth the so-called TV licence fee in itself.

I also think their websites are good (offered in a variety of different languages) and out of all the TV stations, they're still the best when it comes to documentaries, sport and sometimes the news.

However, I do wish they'd stop thinking that we build our lives around the dross that is Eastenders. This miserable rubbish ought to be kicked onto BBC3 leaving space for some decent, family-orientated viewing. (I'd like to see something like Question Time in this slot.)

Wow, how long since you watched Corrie? It hasn't been Cadbury's for ages now. It's some furniture company or other, might be DFS. I'm not sure who cos I don't care. :)

It would have been an excellent rant until you started slagging off video gaming which has been proven to be far more beneficial than TV watching. Until then I was right with you.

Minimo, it's donkey's years since I watched Corrie. and even then it was unwillingly.

I don't watch any "soap". (although I do like shows like CSI, ER, and NCIS)

Lots of TV has been made in 16:9 widescreen for years, almost all TV is made that way now. Just because you have an old TV don't blame everyone else for keeping pace with what is now OLD technology. That's why pretty much all TVs for sale nowadays are 16:9 because that's what's broadcast now.

I agree with pretty much everything in your original rant though :D

I wouldn't have known what you were on about until a few weeks ago when I saw a US recording of a Terminator episode where during a dramatic scene a large green frog popped up and filled half the screen to advertise the next show. Talk about killing the mood.
