i'm just wondering if there are any book shops in sheffield apart from the obvious waterstones and the new one on fargate but are there any small bookshops that u might find something different that waterstones wouldn't have something different basically

The Independent Bookshop on Surrey Street was my favourite bookshop *ever* and I am still so sad that it closed down after Waterstones arrived.

What I do, to get books that are a bit "different" from the Waterstones clones, is go to charity shops. You can find allsorts of amazing books in them. Might be worth a try?

I've long since given up trying to find books (even relatively mainstream ones) in Sheffield.

These days, I stick to Amazon; they link to hundreds of second hand shops around the world.

there's a few good second hand bookshops in sheffield - rare and racy on division street, ysf books on sharrowvale road and the help the aged bookshop in broomhill (v cheap and some great stuff).

i've only ever used waterstones once since i've moved to sheffield and that was to buy a two-volume OED which i then had to lug home on the bus  it only occurred to me afterwards that buying it off amazon would have been a much better idea....

Also the Oxfam on West Street that used to be a retro shop is now an Oxfam bookshop.

Hello...
I would like to let you know abit about the Oxfam Bookshop on West Street.
It has 1000s of books for sale, categories: Children's books, Fiction, Literature, Collectables, Non-Academic & Academic books, which changes regular. The shop also sells vinyl music & films. Recently the shop has started selling New Products goods such as - "Bio D" Cleaning Products (i.e. washing up liquid, toilet cleaner e.t.c), "Faith" Toiletries (i.e. shampoo & conditioners, bath soaps, e.t.c), other products include toilet roll, bicarbinated soda and tea towels. These New Products have been quite popular with customers, especially the washing up liquid and toilet roll.

If you are looking for a certain book, or you have books, music or films you want to donate, then please post a message here. The Bookshop Can also do house clearance collections of the above.
The Bookshop is currently looking for volunteers at the moment, so if you want to find out more please get in touch.

I can't help feeling that dragging up every thread with the words 'charity shop' or 'bookshop' in the title, no matter how old, and then posting the same advert on the end of it, and indeed sometimes twice on the same one, might just be seen as spamming. Eight posts, all of which are the same, must be some sort of record.

It is a little bit spammy, and its against the forum rules to advertise, but don't worry about it too much, you know now.

When I got paid this month I think I spent about 50 quid in between rare and racy and yourselves. Damn you and your book collections. I can't get rid of books either, it jst doesn't happen, so they're slowly taking over my life...

You didn't offend me, I was just pointing out that eventually the mods will probably take exception to it.

I bought a load of books from the central library recently, all at 20p or 30p each. I got some jaqueline wilsons for my sister and a few non fiction and ficton for me. Apparently they quite often sell off old stock. Might be worth a look - some of the ones i picked up were suprisingly recent and some were really obscure old ones.
