Appleseed is out now, and it's bloody brilliant, even non-anime fans would love it.

I thought Ghost In The Shell has a lot of potential but it was a bit dull and the animation was a bit rubbish.

I think anime is thought of as more adult, more sex and violence related.

I could save you two hours of your life and tell you that it's rubbish. The animation is poor, even for the early eighties. The plot is garbage- too much like the Japanese trying to do an 'American' film. The dub is laughable, even by Manga Entertainment standards for that time.
I would beg you not to watch it. Honestly I would. Get someone to hit you in the head with a stick for two hours- you'd get roughly the same feeling you would get as you would watching Golgo 13, only with the added bonus of not having seen the film.

Patlabor and Lupin III are the best anime series ever, IMO. I've just bought Lupin III: First Contact and I think it's great.

Perfect Blue is an amazing film, and so is Ninja Scroll. I was a bit dissapointed with Akira though after all the hype surrounding it.

I also like Devil Man, and some film called Uritsukidoji the legend of the overfiend or something like that. Classic.

That film is disturbing, especially the giant tentacle willies.

Have you ever noticed that the anime characters never ever have any genitals lol. Even when it is a front on shot. They are like naked action men figures.

theres more than one of them... and theres worse... but I think you'll find it's pretty much classed as Hentai and not anime... infact those movies were band in this country until quite recently...

if you like Uritsukidoji you should probably watch LA Blue Girl... but personally I can't watch them... theres something about cartoon rape and demons and stuff that just doesn't quite go down that well with me

Used to be a mad anime fan, but not really seen anything new for a couple of years now.
I think I agree with spyro, ninja scroll is probably my fave too.
Some of my other faves:
Cyber city OEDO 808
AD Police
Geno Cyber
Patlabor
Wicked City
Monster City

Still got a lot on vhs hidden in attic somewhere, might have to dig em' out and give them another viewing.

Yeah, they have some very odd laws about nudity in Japan, if you watch a gay Japanese porn movie everyones "bits" are pixelated out.
They have no problems with the graphic depiction of rape and violence towards women but showing a willie - no way !

Read or Die is another good series, although the OVA is much better than the TV series.

One of the reasons that you often see Japanese animation without genitalia is the fact that the censorship laws over there mean that such things will always be blurred out or covered with a dot.

Western distributors often get their hands on the anime, remove the dot and find that knowing the area will be obscured, the Japanese animators haven't bothered to draw the genetalia at all.

On another note, I had to laugh recently when a journo came out with the quote: "No Akira, no Matrix...it's just that simple."

I think he mean't to say: No Ghost in the Shell, no Matrix...silly boy.

Always loved the studio ghibli films (princess mononoke, sprited away, laputa etc.)
Most are a bit childish but beautifully animated.

I used to be a huge anime fan. Akira is still one of my all time fav films. I'm loving the soundtrack at the moment, had it for years and it's never got old.
Shame that Mr. Otomo's Steamboy was so terrible :(

I think Ghost in the Shell's pretty great too, but I suffer from having the DVD with the damn audio lag problem:mad:. I keep trying to get the new ver with out the lag, but I can't seem to find it.

btw why are things like dragonball and all the others called anime not cartoons? what is the differnce just curious
I think anime is thought of as more adult, more sex and violence related.

Actually for something to be classed as an anime, all it has to be is an animated film from Japan. Violence, sex and adult themes have nothing to do with it (see Pokemon, DBZ, etc).

Although since animation is wildly accepted in Japan, so there are a lot more animated films/show aimed at adult audiences then there are over here and America (were animation is seen as "childish").

I liked the fact that the hero of Steamboy was from Manchester, local boy makes good, but the rest of the film was a bit poor. It looked stunning at every point in the film, but I just couldn't get into it really.
Ignoring the pseudo-science (that little ball can generate how much power?), I still thought the film was a little empty. And too long, if you got the extended edition.

But yes, the Akira soundtrack is great. I had it on cassette years ago but could never find it on CD. Is is the one with all the chanting on it, if that makes sense? I loved that.

Big fan of DBZ, Naruto, BLeach, Hikeru no Go, Cowboy Bebop, and all the ghibli and classic manga company flicks...
I recommend getting hold of a manga called "Death Note".
Awesome!
and there's a live action film due out soon too.
its mature teen/young adult rated stuff but is excellent... Get on it dude.
