Help! I have just found a snake in my bathroom, possibly a grass snake or slow worm. It's currently under floor boards, how do we get it out. Please help or I will have to leave home??

well as nobody's answered that in the last half hour, at this time of night I'd suggest asking an out of hours vet (I assume you already have a good number in your line of business!) for advice

usually I think the council are the people to call - animal control services

Yes Waterthorpe as strix said.

Don't know how it got in but Jon's been trying to coax it out from under the skirting board for the last couple of hours. There's no way I'm going to bed until its caught and repatriated elseware - preferably in another county!

Spoke to RSPCA and they were no use. Just wanted some advice from them that's all. Council will be equally poor and not available anyway until Monday. Jon says if it will come out far enough, he'll grab it. Anyone know what could coax it out?

Got a feeling this could be a very long night!

rspca etc wont do nothing, if its not a fluffly animal they dont care..

is it still there? i can remove the snake for you, lots of experiance, only trouble is, the vw camper wont make it there and back from wincobank where i am....

you can try putting a water bowl nearby, it will want to drink, and some warm towels in a pile.

difficult one babe, especially cos it's sunday, you could try putting a small box with a hole wide enough for the snake to enter.

Go down to retail park " pets at home" buy a frozen mouse, cost about 50p defrost it and put it in box.....wait for snake to smell it and enter box, then when you have snake in box, put the box in an old pillow case and tie it up at top....then take it down to Snakes n Adders Intake next to ball inn.
He will know what to do with it:hihi:

if it is a grass snake or slow worm, it wont eat a mouse. grass snakes will eat frogs etc..

also being a nice unusual snake, its best to be put where it was found, i would love them in my garden!

yeah, i would have said it was most likley a corn etc.

it wont have food under the boards if it is a grass snake, but it could have come in for the winter...i guess, im not a expert on grass snakes.

Well, there's at least one good thing if it is a corn....you'll not get mice! Our corn escaped once, disappeared under floorboards...weeks later O/h was answering call of nature when snake popped up at side of loo!
He nearly had a heart attack, was soooo funny! and the snake had put on mega weight from eating mice:hihi:

i would put some water down & if you can a small piece of fish this should make it come out , but read attached artical see if it gives any idea`s if it it a grass snake it is protected so try not to harm it they dont usually strike unless cornerd , it dont hurt if they do bite lol

Thanks for all your replies and advice. Will give the man from Snakes & Adders a call. Jon was up until 5 o'clock trying to snare the damn thing with an elaborate maze of cardboard and tupperware..! :hihi: He actually managed to grab hold of it once but let it go when it wriggled - big jessie!

He's pretty sure it's a corn snake and not a grass snake or slow worm. Very long and thin and a rich copper brown with typical snake zig-zags. Will go round to the neighbours in a bit to see if they've lost one.

As far as we know, it's still under there. Sealed the bathroom and left the light on to try and keep it under the skirting when we finally got to bed. He can't see it this morning.... :gag: Will try the frozen mouse trick later.

We have cats and a dog. If it is a corn, will it pose them any danger?

well if anyone is near me, and wants to lend a hand catching it, i dont mind if i can get a lift over...

a loose snake no doubt will bite, caught many loose esaped corns etc and they like to bite!

im going to pop back to bed for a bit was awake most of the night with back ache...but if you need me give us a call on [number removed], i should hear the fone!

the cat might go for it...if the snake bites it will but wont hurt the cat..might be the other way around though.

if you can get a few more boards up, it will make it a lot easier.

let me know if you need any help, i have spare vivs for emergencies ready here

No, it's still lurking somewhere. Jon's not seen it since the ealy hours. Had lots of good advice from folk though. We're trying to lure it into a large pop bottle with some raw fish. Pets at Home don't sell frozen mice so had to make do with the fish. Do snakes eat fish? Could be anywhere though - in the walls, under the floor, in the attic..:gag: As long as it stays there and doesn't try to get in the bed lol! Mind you, I don't think there would be room with us two, Izzy and the cats.. :hihi:

think the fish would scare it away..

oh yeah, had lots of baby rat snakes born at the weekend..so if you want one of your own, let me know ;-) i rescued the parents many years ago, and the babies are a great beginners snake.

cant see a pop bottle working...but try this...

a bowl of water, it will need to drink, plus lots of snakes soak....also it will slow the snake down being cooler, so easier to handle..thats all i can think of at this time of the morning

Right, mouse on the menu this evening. Made the bottle trap properly, juicy mouse served rare in the bottom, hope he's hungry!

This is a shot of it's head that I managed to get on Saturday. Can anyone positively I.D it from this?

yes its a normal corn snake, i have one...does it look like this? half way down

http://www.julianhales.co.uk/snakes_jan_08.htm

only trouble with feeding it the mouse is, afterwards it will want to curl up warm somewhere for a couple of days so you might not find it.....

put some towels in a pile near water along with the mouse

LOL...deffo corn, makes you wanna wiggle that mouse right in front of his nose don't it Cooljules! :hihi::hihi:
Look's a good four footer though cos his head's quite big.

If you hang onto mouse, tempt him out a little beyond striking distance, I think you'll have him, make sure he gets a good whiff and tempt him, he will come out. Wriggle the mouse by the tail, make little bashing noises with it, to get his attention but as jules said don't let him have it, cos he'll devour and disappear again.
Totally harmless though.

God I wish I lived that end, would be over like a shot!

haha, my corn is evil...bite hurts a bit but nowt really, had much worser bites..

yeah i would wiggle it under the boards...and as it strikes and starts to eat, then grab the snake it cant bite then...i had to do that with a nearly 20' snake as it was eating a piglet....i once rescued one of the most dangerous, evil snakes on the planet!!!

Cheers for all the advice and offers folks. Snake's gone totally dark, dropped right off the radar. Maybe he'll be out in the night? Wish I'd had the mouse when I had his attention on Saturday night. Hope he's ok wherever he is.

No I meant the part where you said it will attack them.
It will try to get away before it even thought about taking a human on. I have caught countless snakes using the bottle trap but I believe this one is too big for the bottle trap.

Has anyone gone for it yet????? It's quite a large one judging by the pic, would make excellent breeding stock one would have thought?:hihi:

ah i got confused...

i dont want somone who hasnt handled a snake before, to suddely grab it, then get bitten, as is whats most likley to happen, they will naturally drop and release it, but if its half eating a mouse at the time, then it cant bite just wriggle...

Point taken.

I was more concerned as it made snakes seem to people who have never handled or been near them that they are the monster animals that some make them out to be. When in fact most snakes will attempt to run before even thinking of attacking a person.

Thanks guys for your lovely comments. I am so chuffed to think that I am homing the biggest corn snake on the planet!!!! I agree though now my brain is slightly less scrambled with the shock that the "intruder" is too big for the bottle and in fact it will be simply laughing at the mouse snack left to tempt it. I have tapped politely on the floor asking it to leave so PLEASE can someone reassure me and say that it has probably upped and left for another county by now? The thought of it popping out to surprise me at a later date is not doing much for my nerves, even though the cats have said they could use it as a skipping rope!!!

i dint know how big the snake was when i sent the link for the bottle trap.

i would think the snake may have gone next door with all the banging and poking about, but having said that it could just be under floor boards in a different room in your house :hihi:

if it was my house with the snake i wouldn't be too bothered i would probably just put a mouse down for it every other week.

Lol. I'm quite relaxed about having him around, I've even nicknamed him 'Cornelius'. Still not seen him since the early hours of Sunday though. I think he's building up for a grand re-entrance..! :hihi:

I should point out at this stage - before anyone thinks I'm a Schitzo - that there are two of us posting under this user name. Jacky is the scaredy one and I'm the .. erm.. not so scaredy one. ;)
