View Full Version : Are toy poodles and miniature poodles the same ? kimba 04-10-2008, 17:14 cheers  medusa 04-10-2008, 17:16 I don't think that they are the same- I think (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) that there are 3 sizes of poodle, standard being the largest and toy being the smallest, although miniature poodles are still quite small. kimba 04-10-2008, 17:26 do you think it might be the way they are cut then wat makes them all look so different ? as im looking on the net and thinking they are different kinds. Lotti 04-10-2008, 17:36 The sizes are Toy the smallest, then miniature, then standard the big ones. According to Breed Standard: Standard: over 38 cms (15 ins). Miniature: height at shoulder should be under 38 cms (15 ins) but not under 28 cms (11 ins). Toy: height at shoulder should be under 28 cms (11 ins). kimba 04-10-2008, 17:48 do toy and miniture look different then like there features and that ? Lotti 04-10-2008, 17:56 only that the miniature is a little smaller in frame - more 'petite' really. kimba 04-10-2008, 18:10 great thanks a lot for the info :D im sat here with a friend and she is lookingfor a small dog looking at bishon frise now any info on them ? Lotti 04-10-2008, 18:22 Only that my great aunt had one... and he was gorgeous. Energy and temperament wise I believe poodles are higher maintenance than the bichon. They seem to be more energetic and bouncy than the bichon. I don't know much about bichon frise though - I'm getting a poodle in a year or so but never really looked at bichons! Plain Talker 04-10-2008, 18:23 great thanks a lot for the info :D im sat here with a friend and she is looking for a small dog looking at bishon frise now any info on them ? a bichon frise was originally a crossing between a Maltese terrier and a poodle. they are smallish, but need lots of grooming cos they are long-ish haired dogs, kimba 04-10-2008, 18:41 ohh look at this http://www.friday-ad.co.uk/AdRef/RD836ZHXH/Class/208/Editions/1S%7CSheffield%7C1R,1W,1X,2E,2F,2G,2H/SArea/Local/Web/FullAdDetails.asp Lotti 04-10-2008, 18:46 Yup - £380 for a regular cross breed dog that hasn't had any health checks and is bred purely as a 'designer dog' to make a quick buck. Great isn't it. Poodles need various health tests before being bred from and acquiring one who's parents have not had such health tests could leave your friend open to BIG vets bills later (or not so later) in life. Please consider very carefully and if you're not going to go for a rescue, go to a reputable breeder who breeds for health and temperament. Also - I wasn't aware that bichons shed hair... I thought they were non moulting anyway, but if they're not - you may end up with one that sheds anyway, you don't know which parent the pup's coat will follow. SpeedDemon 04-10-2008, 18:53 Kimba, has your friend seen the poodle for sale on here? It's somewhere in this thread... http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=401933 lisajaynec 04-10-2008, 21:05 Pmed you as there is a jackadoodle pup on dogs pages more dogs up north called pele and being fostered in manchester-hes 17mths old and looks lovely. sorry dont know how to attach links Gemima 05-10-2008, 21:18 There is no difference between the three sizes of poodle looks wise, apart from the size, they all come in the same range of colours. Black, Chocolate, Champagne, White, Apricot and I am sure there are some more colours. Bichons and Poodles have the same coat type (wool) which means that they need a lot of grooming both professionally and at home. Both breeds mat incredibly easily and once matted they cannot become wet, so daily combing is essential to prevent tangles turning into mats. Both breeds are high maintainence in that department, but out of the two I think Poodles are less highly strung than Bichons in my experience as a groomer. I see more Bichons than poodles, they do seem to be very popular at the moment, but I only groom one Bichon with a full coat, the rest are completely shaved down as owners cannot cope. Hope this is of some help. |
