We had this problem when I lived in Manchester 10 years ago. I lived in Oxfordshire for 3.5 years since and people used to laugh at me when I told them why I didn't hang out my washing in the garden.
I just don't do it now.. and never will do.

I used to work with a woman who lived at anston, fairly rural house, and she used to leave her washing out all day, and one time she had lots of very expensive bras nicked from her line. Now I know that some women pay £60+ for decent bras, I wouldn't leave anything outside in my garden that was worth 20 quid let alone 60. Unless it was chained up to one of these :-

Arnold Layne had a strange hobby
Collecting clothes
Moonshine washing line
They suit him fine
On the wall hung a tall mirror
Distorted view, see through baby blue
Oh, Arnold Layne
It’s not the same, takes two to know
Two to know, two to know
Why can’t you see?
Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne

Now he’s caught - a nasty sort of person
They gave him time
Doors bang - chain gang - he hates it
Oh, Arnold Layne
It’s not the same, takes two to know
Two to know, two to know
Why can’t you see?
Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne

Don’t do it again

I suppose desperate times cause desperate measures.........though it must take a certain "type" of person that would be comfy wearing somebody elses clothes nicked off a clothes line! I suppose that the old and well worn items would be left on the line.........and only the new/trendy stuff would go? I don't think anybody would be interested in our gear because we are by no means trendsetters or followers of fashion! lol. Perhaps if expensive items were concealed under a sheet or something, they would remain there.
We had somebody come into our back garden only yesterday. We were out at a wedding and I had left a load of washing pegged out. We knew that somebody had been in the garden because the dog had wrecked the kitchen by jumping up on the work surfaces to the window. Today I found out just who the "interloper" was..........my dear next door neighbour had come and cut our side of the hedge. Bless him. I wish you all had neighbours like we do.........both sides are brilliant. AND........believe me when I say that I appreciate having good neighbours because I have also had horrendously bad neighbours where I would have been glad if the only thing they did was nick my washing!
Despite the evil thieving toe rags........they are out numbered by the good and honest folk of South Yorkshire.

I once had some clothes go missing - off the drying rail inside the house

Nobody in Peterborough can possibly have a use for a black velvet corset. They still tar and feather people who wear such things down there :(

Not much consolation but this is not a new offence.
It was very prevelant from the 16th century when clothes were hung on bushes to dry.
All items of clothing were very expensive.
The offence I beleive was called snowflaking {because of the white clothes spread over bushes.
It was so prevelant that penalties became increasingly harsher.
On 17th April 1850 Mary Mcclean was sent to Van Diemans land for 7 years for nicking a petticoat and cloak off of a bush.
Something to bear in mind if you catch 'em.
