Hi all, we have been thinking about getting a kitten for some time.We already have a 8 year old Tom who is the calmest most loving friendly cat in the world! So I have been a little worried about rocking his world by introducing a little bundle of manic kitten to his life! But I think he'l be cool.He has been neutered,I was thinking if we got another cat the original cat would get on better with a female kitten but I dont know why? Is he more likely to get on with a Tom,or a she?He happily hangs around in the garden with neighbours cats.
I was at my friends last night and she has just got a lovely little kitten of about 8 weeks old.She has got it from a farm she works at where they have semi-ferrel cats, and apparantly this one has a sister( but could be a brother?) that could also do with being homed,so I think we are going to get it on Monday.Hers is very friendly.
So what do I need to know,I cant remember when other cat was a kitten.I know she has taken hers to the vet and had him wormed.etc and bought it powdered kitten milk and kitten pouches.
So any info would be helpful.I guess I need to buy a litter tray, and litter(any sort cheapest or best?)
I guess I need to get it checked over by a vet asap, wormed, fleaed, vacinated etc and in the future neutered or spayed. Also original Tom hasn't had any jabs since he was a kitten,do I need to protect him against anything the kitten could be carrying?
I realise when you take on an animal you cant expect it to cost nothing, but at the same time I want to do everything as cheap as possible( dont worry will always be well looked after, and have everything it needs).
So any hints on cost cutting welcomed,as we are about to hit a rather tight few months!
And good names( not the typical cat names, unique and original! Our Tom is called Claude-as in clawed)
Thanks

Hiya - for vet treatment, (ie; worming, vaccinations, neutering, flea treatment) the cheapest I've found is Spire Vets at Chesterfield (01246 455333) You should not need kitten milk, as it will be weaned already at that age. I have a litter tray with a hood on it and a cat flap. Think it was about a tenner from pets at home, but just a normal one should be about 3 or 4 quid i should think. I don't think I'm really qualified to suggest names, as ours are called Donut, Bob, Kevin & Princess Delilah  Good luck with your new baby :)

Thanks for reply, was it your post I was reading earlier about rehoming boys? If so made me chuckle!
Also anyone give me an idea of what it should cost approx to do everything? And if it appears fine is it necessary to get it vet checked immediately,or just buy the relevant medications, and see a vet when it is at an age suitable for vaccinations(what age is that?).I don't want to cut corners, but at the same time I don't want to spend just for the sake of it.

Yes that was my thread about rehoming my boys, as is the one with cat racing  I recently had my maine coon vaccinated at local vets for cat flu, entiritis and leukaemia. The full course was £45. Spire charge £38. The leukaemia jab isn't always given as routine. My local vets always recommend it so i have it done. Unfortunately, thats the expensive part of the vaccinations, but I watched my sisters cat die of leukaemia and it was horrid :( so i always vaccinate against it. Others may not. Yearly boosters are £30 in my local vet so I guess spire would be around £25. You can buy frontline from pets at home now. Don't bother with "supermarket flea treatments" as you'd just be throwing money away, they're useless - always use something like frontline or advantage. I can't remember what age they have their first vaccs, I think it's maybe 12 weeks, followed by the 2nd set 3 to 4 weeks later (included in initial cost) Most vets will include a "check over" when they do the vaccs - you may have to ask when you call for an appointment. My vet did the 1st set, and checked her teeth, ears, heart etc but the nurse will probably do her 2nd lot, which she's having on monday. Hope that helps.

Just a word of advice, please expect the little mite to be nervous at first. Some people take this for unfriendliness and write them off as being feral, but feral kits make lovely cats. They just need lots of time spending on them playing. I always let my kits have a couple of weeks rest before taking them to the vet. A new home is traumatic enough for such a young thing. It's lovely to hear that you are rehoming a feral. x

I got my litter tray with a hood and flap from Wilkinsons for £7.99. All the assessories seem to be cheaper than the pet supermarkets.
