hi
i went this weekend for the 2nd time and i must agree with the opening post,
Don't quite know why it was so poor as they seem to have plenty of staff and the food and menu look ok but the service is really bad.
there is also a massive fly problem!!!????? (i know it's a fantastic countryside location but come on!!)
No communication with staff/bar
POOR.

I think this is one of those places that could be really good but is still a way off. When you go to the Cricket Inn I always seem to notice the manager hovering around and you get the impression he runs a tight ship. We went to the Inn and even though it was empty, it took over half an hour for our sarnies to arrive - though the food is good. We wouldn't go back though because of the flies. What annoyed me was sat there swatting these monsters that kept landing on our food and numerous staff hanging around near us not seeming to be bothered by this.

Lol - Still recovering from going to the Fat Duck a couple of months ago. Anyhow, what's it to you if me and the missus and my two kids and my Uncle Joe and Auntie Eilleen and my gandad Selby and me Ganny Gertrude and me best mates John and Dave share a prawn mayo side a chips and a round of tap water. Richard Smith doesn't look a poor chap.

the old Blackamore (i think). service is shocking
massive problem with flies???????
i can't believe that no manager/staff have not noticed this.
surely they can be easily irradicated! (the flies not the staff!!!)
on the whole it's a lovely looking place with great potential but a long long way off being ok.
the esteemed Mrs harris is the owner so i'm sure it will be turned around.

I think Richard Smith is involved somehow also. Again agree with OP, great food, rubbish service and flies all over the place. Maybe it was just a bad day when we went and on speaking with the manager on shift, a pleasant lady with dark hair we were told they are trying everything in their power to resolve the issues. We will visit again in the future hopefully when this is the case.

HI All

So its is me and hubbies wedding anniversary and my manager at work reccommended this pub for a nice lunch to celebrate. I booked a table for two yesterday and then proceeded to have a look on here to see if anyone
else had been.

If I had been the sort of person not to ahve my own opinion I wouldnt have gone based on whats been said about the place on here, luckily we decided to make up our own minds.

OH MY GOODNESS !!!

We have ust eaten the best meal we have had in years, tasty, well presented and beautifully cooked, we couldnt have asked for more, and the service was second to none !

Starters:

Soup of the day, thick tasty and stunning.

Yorkshire pudding with home made black pudding, huge yorkie, with swede mash and onions, the black pudding was to die for. gravy was thick and tasty.

Main Course:

Liver and Onions, cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth, with mash and crispy streaky bacon.

Pork Chop, the biggest chop I ahve ever had and the best crackling with it, came with broccolli, mash, and home made stuffing...yumyumyum The chop was clearly local meat, it was sublime.

We were by now stuffed but the puddings looked too good not to finish the meal off with sooooo

dessert:

Sherry Trifle, in a tall stem glass, fresh and homemade this was the best trifle hes had in years and believe me my man knows his trifle !!

White Choc Torte, melted in my mouth, stunning.

We both had coffee and the bill came to 49.00, which really for what we had and how much we enjoyed it was a bargain, we have found our new fav place to eat and will be going back very very soon.

Dont be put off by the posts about flies and poor service, the general manager said to me that she is sad about all that but that they are getting it sorted for the summer, that said the pub is in the middle of the countrside with fields all round it, and I suppose there isnt alot they can do with the septic tank to be honest.

Our meal was fly free, stunning and we were very well looked after in a busy lunchtime rush.

Thanks To all at the Troway and see you again soon.

Three courses each plus coffee, I dont think thats too bad, I could have gone to the bog off of course and had microwaved something or other but homecooked local produce sounded great and it was hehe

The Blackamoor changed its name to The Inn at Troway. It is the large half timbered pub on the main road above Troway.

I have been several times recently and had passable meals. I am happy to eat there but I could name a dozen places in Sheffield where I can expect better food at the same or lower prices.

Yes, it used to be the Black-a-more until it was closed down and boarded up. Brewkitchen bought it, refurbished it and opened it up as the Inn at Troway.

Brewkitchen is a joint venture between Thornbridge Brewery and Richard Smith restaurants, who also have the Cricket Inn at Totley.

They are very food led pubs, tend to have simple British dishes served in a fancy manner using quality ingredients, at prices that are a little dearer than most pubs but much better value than a smart restaurant. They also have a selection of real ales from Thornbridge Brewery, and the Inn at Troway also have guest beers. They also have a no-reservation policy except for large groups, which gives a higher turnover of tables (and means you can happily just turn up if the fancy takes you and still get a table).

Had a meal there last week and was not impressed at all. A price of £12 for a Sunday roast beef is a bit much unless its top class. It came as two fairly thick slices of beef, but was pink and bloody in the middle. I hope the fad of undercooked meat ends soon. I want food not fashion. It was served with a leathery Yorkshire pud. Although it was home made, I make much better ones myself, even Aunt Bessy does. There were a few roast potatoes and then cauliflower and Brocolli which were both cold, hard and raw. No other veg. No carrots, peas or mash.

So summarising, two slices of raw beef, a tough and chewy Yorkshire pudding, a few roast potatoes, a piece of cold raw broccoli, a piece of cold raw cauliflower and some average cool gravy for twelve quid. Thats it. A bargain (not).

Add to that extortionate beer prices. A pint of beer, pint of lager and three halves of cider for £11.50. Not helped because one of the ciders had a tiny splash of blackcurrant in which cost an extra 50p.

I'll also not forget the disgusting and "I'm superior than you" look from one of the waitresses when I queried whether there were any more vegetables to come.

Dont forget to leave a bit for the flies. Looking at the size of them they will need plenty of food. They really are the size of bees.

I find it strange that reviews in such as The Star and other local mags say this is top class. Is it because they are known to be going and get better treatment and bigger portions and free meals for favourable comments. Thats probably another topic. I can only imagine that the chef here is trying to be one of the contestants in a tv cooking program, where they serve raw meat and offal pretending it is what the average person wants and sucking up to the "stuck up their own Rses" judges who are so superior and think that they know more than Joe Public about what makes a good meal.

As you might gather, We are not going there again

I must agree with all you said.

We have just been for Sunday lunch. It was all stone cold and the vegetables ( mange tout and runner beans and thats it) were raw. The Yorkshire pudding was like cardboard.

The staff were abysmal and didn't get us for the table until we had to remind them again after 45 minutes.

Don't waste your money. Go somewhere else, we will be.

the moorland is a great meal at the owler bar , sunday lunches all week round a choice of beef , turkey , or gammon , eat as much veg as you like , and all for £3.50 during the week and £5.95 at weekends , its my favorite eating hole

I think The Inn @ Troway is fantastic, I would recommend this Bistro Pub to any of my friends or anyone looking to have a fabulous meal. I have been numerous times and had an excellent meal every time. I like the fact that The Inn @ Troway only use local produce and everything is home-made. I'm not sure what this fly problem is that everyone is talking about, I don't think i've seen such a pest around :-S. ***** EXCELLENT

My wife and i used to go there at least once a week when it was The BlackaMoor and we always found it was great especially when David & Beverley used to be the managers there. It was a Brewers Fayre then but we always found the food and the service top class. I have been a couple of times since it was bought by Thornbridge Brewery and i must say the food was good but the service is atrocious. I went there shortly before Christmas with a works do and we waited forever between our courses and the staff just didn't seem to be very well trained. If i knew where David and Beverley were nowadays i would strongly recommend them to Thornbridge brewery as they knew how to make everyone feel special.

9th March 2010 - Myself and my family went to this restaurant yesterday and were utterly disgusted! The food was soo greasy that we sent half the meals back. No apology or replacements were offered and when we voiced our disappointment, the waitress reply was "well, it was only scampi and chips". The Staff were extrememly rude and would not know customer service if it jumped up and bit them in their pretentious backsides. The 1 member of our party that was brave enough to eat all their meal, were then rewarded with a night of sickness and diarrhea. Avoid this place at all costs. The location is dire. In the summer your experience is ruined with a plague of flies and the smell of drains hit you as soon as you get out the car. Our dreadful experience still ended up robbing us of £95 for 6 people ( and that was with 3 meals refunded)

Went there with my parents today - Cricket Inn was full so they directed us there. I have to say, the food was lovely but the staff were also. Our waiter couldn't have been less attentive if he tried. I even had to wave at him to get him to come take our desert orders as we'd been left with the menu for 20 minutes.

Does anyone know an email address for the place for complaining purposes? Or is it snail mail time?

Disagree with any previous poor comments the food is british pub grub you get what it says on the tin - pie or fish and chips cooked fresh not fine dining but hearty food. the staff are friendly and if there is anything you are unhappy with or need they are happy to replace or oblige, you can try the beer or wine if undecided and they always have a table even if you have to wait (not a problem plenty of chance for extra drinks!) not a patch on the other thornbridge pub the cricket with unhelpful staff and low grade meat pie (trust me I have eaten pie at both places!)

Went on Sunday for lunch. Had to wait a long time for everything but when the food came it was very good. Our waitress was very busy with lots of tables but was doing her best, however when our desserts were brought by another waitress (i think she may have been a manager or supervisor) she brought out the wrong flavour ice cream for one of my children. When I said it was the wrong flavour she said with a very stroppy attitude "Are you absolutely sure?" to which I replied I was and knew what my children liked. She then asked again " Are you certain as it says its right according to the ticket?"
She then stormed off into the kitchen to get the correct order.

When she came back she slammed the dessert on the table. I started to speak to her about it and she just walked off for us not to see her again. Her attitude to her job was terrible and although the food was very good I won't be returning.

We popped in to have a look to see what was on the menu [didn't eat - just looking]
Meaty meals and fish and chips are about £14 to £18
Veggie meals are £8 to £15
Sandwiches available.
the decor is lovely. Didn't notice any flies though.
The guy who showed us the menu behind the bar took the time to explain that all the meat is fresh [not frozen] and his attitude was charming.
We'll be going to try it out very soon.

went there on saturday night, and had a perfectly acceptable meal. service was friendly, the beer was great, the food was between very good (the sea bass and the venison) to the okay (my sheffield fishcake was good, if not stellar - but then it's hard to get flavour into a big plate of deep fried stuff!). the kids portions were absurd - clearly an adult portion!

service was up and down - quick to take our orders, food was prompt, but then the plates were on the table for ages. as we were there with kids, we had to leave before we got round to ordering desserts, as it was past bedtime. when the plates were cleared, seeing that most of our daughters pasta was left, the waiter was keen to ask if there was a problem (there wasn't - it was just far too much food for a toddler!).

all round i'd recommend the place, and i'd go back - though i'd steer clear of the fish and chips - like every else i've tried in sheffield, they are a bit disappointing. didn't think it was too expensive at all - there were plenty of cheaper options on the menu in all categories. most meals are between £8 and £12, with only a couple of items on the whole menu coming in at more (10oz rib eye steak, fresh seafood selection & and a whole bake brie - all 'special' treat items).

if you pay wetherspoons prices, expect wetherspoons quality. personally, i prefer real food with real beer in a real pub.

Great place.....one of only a handful of decent pubs, that are clean, well looked after, welcoming atmosphere and excellent range of locally sourced produce.

Been there several times now, and yes, sometimes they're slow to attend, but that's only when their busy. Nothing a couple more staff wouldn't solve!

Venison (specials board) was excellent! I eat in restaurants 2-3 times a week all over the UK (away on work) and that's one of the best cooked pieces of Bambi I've ever had!

No chavs, no barfly's (permanent drunks) and good local art on the wall (Pete McKee).

After several good meals here we went again on Tuesday evening. It was probably the worst eating experience we have ever had. I had a starter which included a poached egg. The egg was cold and the yolk was solid. My wife had Fish and Chips which were, more or less, inedible. My steak was way over cooked and sitting on top of it was a green/yellow object which I failed to identifyMy chips were cold and greasy.
We complained and they did reduce the main course bill by 50%. I have looked at Richard Smith's website but there is no section to post comments.

the moorland is a great meal at the owler bar , sunday lunches all week round a choice of beef , turkey , or gammon , eat as much veg as you like , and all for £3.50 during the week and £5.95 at weekends , its my favorite eating hole
'Hole' being the key word! If you can eat the food at Moorlands you just don't care any more!
