View Full Version : Help! Feline behaviourist needed.
I am having some real problems with one of my cats, we have tried everything recommended by advice forums, online support places etc, and the vet has given her a clean bill of health. I need to find a cat behaviourist as I cannot go on much longer like this, and if she is so stressed she may be better be rehoused with someone who can give her whatever it is she seems to need. I am really upset and stressed and last ditch attempt I can think of to resolve this is to find a cat behaviourist. I really do not know what else to do, I really do not want to have her rehoused, but if she is so unhappy it may be the only way to make her feel better. I have no idea what is wrong with her. Please, if anyone knows of a cat behaviour specialist please let me know, I can only find dog behaviourists. Please help???:help:

fox20thc 02-10-2008, 21:48 what's the problem?
She was really poorly a while ago, she is fine now, but since then she has been really nervous. Any little thing that upsets her, she just stops using the litter tray and poos on the floor. So if I go out for an hour, she poos on the floor, if I don't let her in my room at night, she poos on the floor, if an ambulance or fire engine goes past, she will go and poo on the floor. If one of the other cats goes near her foodbowl, she poos on the floor. Basically she seems to poo on the floor whenever she gets angry/upset/scared/stressed/want attention. If I don't play with her eg if I am cooking and she wants to play, she runs upstairs and poos on the floor. I am at my wits end, and it is starting to upset my other cats too.
she knows it is wrong, she runs away to hide when she has done it, and she will use a litter tray the rest of the time.
She is 2 years old, spayed female. I have had her since she was 13 weeks old. She gets on fine with my other cats.
I don't know how to deal with this, but if she is so upset then maybe she would be better with someone else? My other cats are all fine, all use the litter tray no problems.
Moonbird 02-10-2008, 22:55 I wonder if she is still having tummy trouble, have you taken her back to the vet for advice? you can also buy something called a Felliway plug in which is really good for calming cats down in most cases,, perhaps someone else will be along soon who can help a bit more.
ohhh dear, firsty i do know of someone who does cat behavour stuff, but im not sure where she is based!!..try contacting val strong at clough fields cattery, crosspool she does dogs and may do cats but if not ask if she has a contact for liouse she is the woman who does cats..i have heard she is good....
secondly having owned cats for 40 years i would say rehoming her would be the worst thing to do! i had persians for years and bred them, never had an ounce of trouble,i now have moggies and have had lots of problems!!!....in my experience,i have 1 cat who took to spraying on everything,he was neutered but still did it,bags, boxes, coats you name it he was a very nervous cat even though he lived with his mom and was born here,he did it for about a year and then touch wood stopped!for no reason....his mom too is a nightmare she has wee'd everywhere, every corner, even next to her litter tray on the floor when the door is open! i tried everything on the market nothing worked, eventually we have taken up all our carpets downstairs, and everytime she moves we pick her up and put her out giving her lots of praise and fuss, shut the door and dont let her in untill we feel she has been for a wee!again with lots of fuss (what a bore!)...this seems to have worked BUT since it has been raining lots she has been difficult to get out,so we will see if it works thourhg winter...i do think cats go through fazes and it may pass....i do hope so,these cats can be a nightmare i swear im not having anymore!!! good luck
puddinburner 03-10-2008, 07:08 Poor puss! Must be so embarrassing for her but it sounds like she may be having trouble with control? Was thinking, any animal who is extremely scared pooop's, as the muscles relax cos it's thinking flight rather than fight?
On the other hand, she maybe extremely at ease, so again muscles relax and poop.
Take her to the vet and get him to check her over, the op may have damaged a nerve controlling muscles? Sound's daft but it could have.
Cat's are so immaculate clean, I would'nt have thought it was an "on purpose" sort of thing.....You know an okay cat, sort of has to concentrate with that far away look when pooing.
Sounds like your poor lil mite has no control:(
Deffo take her to a feline specialist if the vet can't find the problem but I'd would have thought...sounds more lack of bowl control.
I've had one that does similar things and extra litter trays in safe out of the way places helped. She was a nervous kitty too.
I found that after three years (yes you read that right) of gentle encouragement and showing her to a tray at every incident. Also making a big fuss of her at these stressfull times she managed to sort herself out.
My old queen has started pooping on the floor now, but she's going senile so we follow her around with a bottle of disinfectant and probably will for the rest of her life.
Take her back to the vets and as for the cat verson of prosac, can not rememeber the name. A few weeks of this may give her time to relax again and settle down. My cat had it for a few weeks when she decided after 10 years of living with 2 other cats she hated them both and would attack them on sight. They did the trick. Calmed her down and all is well now
I doubt that she is doing it on purpose. I would definately try the hidden cat tray thing, it has worked for mine. My 18month old cat suddenly decided to pee and poo wherever she liked, including on my bed whilst I was in it (She has a choice of two hooded litter trays.) She then decided to wee in the porch on dog towels and carrier bags, so I put a normal litter tray in there and hey presto, so far so good. It has a cat flap, so she can go in there in peace, whenever she likes and she seems to prefer that.
thanks for the advice so far, we have tried most of the things. She is an oriental (like a siamese, but all one colour!), she uses the tray sometimes, other times she ges on the floor. we have 6 litter trays around the house, including one covered one and one giant one, and one with a different type of litter in it just in case! It was like a cat flu that she had when she was a kitten, even though she had been vaccinated (vet said it can happen though god knows where she caught it as my cats don't go outside due to traffic), although we have a large house so plenty of space for them all. we have several "cat trees". scratchy posts, tunnels, toys etc, lots of bedding and blankets for them too. We use a feliway plug in, and I tired the spray where she was going in case it was marking behaviour.
the vet has given her a thorough going over and cannot find anything wrong, she said it was psychological.
this has been going on for a year now, and I am at my wits end. I darent have friends round, or visiotrs for fear of embarrasment if they find a "surprise" and carpet in one room is ruined (I have closed that room off until I can afford to replace the carpet)
Thats why I don't know what to do anymore, I have tried everything I can think of. I will try and contact the lady mentioned in an above post on monday.
any other ideas, please keep them coming!
thanks
oh, and I really do not want to rehome her, I do believe that when you take on an animal you take it on for life, better or worse, I was just thinking that if she was so upet/stressed being here in this household maybe she would be happier elsewhere. I just want to do the best thng for her, and my other cats, and my sanity too!
have you tried a different vet. I go to crooks at Rotherham, I always see Chris or Grant. They are both very good with cat problems inc physcoloical problems.
Does she just poo when she is stressed like she is having an accident, or does she just go where ever she likes?
wondertec 03-10-2008, 20:10 i'd try a second opinion, just to be sure...
When i was having problems with one of my cats, i was recommended to ring Wizz at Wizz cats and she gave me some advice, might be worth giving her a ring and see if she can help.. she has a website..
Does she just poo when she is stressed like she is having an accident, or does she just go where ever she likes?
she just goes where she likes. It is not like an instant loud noise-instant poo (sorry, didnt know how else to put it), it is more that if I don't give her attention straight away when she wants it she will run upstairs and do a poo and then run around the house looking scared as she knows it is wrong.
At other times it seems totally random to me, we tried monitoring to make sure no one was threatening her on the litter tray, but she does it even when she is totally alone. It does seem like half the time it is stress and the other half for attention.
I have tried ignoring it when it happens and just cleaning up, I have tried praising her when she gets it right, I have tried shutting her alone in a room for a while when she does it wrong, I have tried (as recommended by a vetenary nurse) to flick her ear when she does it wrong as I was told this feels like how her mum would have disciplined her. It is driving me crazy, I am out of ideas. I will try ringing the people recommended on here on Monday, and I will certainly try taking her to a different vet for a check up.
Also, I had no idea you could get prozac for cats. I don't know why this strikes me as funny but it does! If she gets high all my other cats (3 of them) will be so jealous!
My Grandma thought she may be acting like this as the only girl cat in the house but all 4 of my cats are neutered. would this make a difference?
Also, it is not like she does not get attention, she spends most of the evening curled up on my knee (usually trying to gnaw a library book or eat the button on my jeans)
I would take her back to the vets. I would also suggest keeping her in one room for a few days. This will break her routine of doing it all over the house. Cats can get stuck in a behaviour, and then it turns in to a habit. If you change her routine completely, it may break the cycle.
Also I didnt think that a cat would poo for attention, thats more of a dog behaviour.?
