It has been said on here several times by some that George Michael got away with a caution by the police because he was a celebrity. Any normal person would have been locked away they decry. Well I wonder if that's true? A home office reports that in 1998 that for an MAX PUNISHMENT (possession) 5 years or a fine (or both) AVERAGE PUNISHMENT (in reality) 10 months with £93 fine
CAUTIONED 3,647
FOUND GUILTY 9,221
IMPRISONED 1,290
Far more ppl get cautioned for cocaine possession without the intent to supply than imprisoned. And it is widely believed that the balance between punishment and rehabilitation is 'about right'
I have very liberal views on drugs and believe they should be legalized, if only to stop the enormous associated crime but believe it is kept illegal to keep the price high and to further exploit the poor. Heroin was very cheap when it was legal and almost no one was addicted to it. Cannabis, downgraded to a cat c drug started to lose popularity.
What are the benefits? If you decriminalize drugs you have less criminals, less crime, less drug addicts, more money, less poverty. And if you are stupid enough to take drugs - on your head be it, just like drink and fags.
George clearly wasn't supplying, probably cooperated with the police, Probably had a bit of crack and some weed. I probably reckon a caution was appropriate. Your thoughts?

Anyone without loads of previous would just have got a caution. He has been treated the same as others. It should not be a criminal offence but as it is I agree a caution is about right.
