Do they show up in BIOS?
Hi Steev
Sorry I been so long I have written this down:-
IDE ENABLED
ONBOARD SATAII ENABLED
PRIMARY IDE MASTER HARD DISK
PRIMARY IDE SLAVE NOT DETECTED
SECONDARY IDE MASTER MASTER [ATAPI CD ROM]
SECONDARY IDE SLAVE NOT DETECTED
Sorry about the capitals but that is how it is written
Regards
Tony

From the BIOS message it looks like it's detecting the DVD drive which is connected internally to the computer. The USB drive is unlikely to be detected at BIOS (however, it can be).
I'd assume it's a problem with Windows, it could be a registry problem. You could go to Control Panel > Add New Hardware and do a scan for the drives from there?
Failing that, you could do a system restore to a point when it was last working.
Or even a sfc/check now could work.

I have two DVD drives one internal and one external USB powered
Have been down the add new hardware route
Do not want to go system restore because stuff on the machine
What is an "sfc/check"
Tony
If it's showing up in BIOS then yes it sounds like Windows as Tony says...
If you haven't installed anything major in the last few days then using System restore to go back a bit shouldn't hurt, & even if you have you can always re-install anything new afterwards.
What is an "sfc/check"
Start -> Run -> [type] sfc /check [& hit return]
(note: space between sfc & /check)

Hi There
Couple of things,I would love to go down the system restore route but,I do not know what I will loose or what I can keep, emails are especially important to me(bearing in mind my business)the only other thing that I can think of was that silly Apple media player, that I un-installed.
system restore is a program in Windows that puts the registry back to a date when it was backed up, you won't lose any data.
I think it's in...
Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools
...but I'm not on XP.
Just open it up, look for the most recent date there is a backup for, make another backup before restoring then just go for it.
Loosing any Apple media player will just be a bonus...

Sorted   Sorted   Sorted
I have managed to sort this problem with some help from Bill Gates, although he does not realise it
Copy and paste this into your browser http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
I would advise you to print the sheets out.
You now have two options
1 Manually delete the registry entries
Or
2 Guided Help
I went for the guided help
You download a little program from Microsoft
Once done, which takes about 10 seconds, then reboot and hey presto you have things back to normal.
One point I did pick up.
Method 1: Guided Help to delete the registry entries.
I DID NOT uninstall "CD recording or CD writing programs",as requested.

Anyway people thanks for all your help

Thought it might be a registry problem. Glad it's fixed. :)
