Don't reply if you have no idea!

There are no set number prefixes for networks anymore, not for a few years since they started porting numbers i.e. take your number with you between networks.

All mobile numbers begin 07, no matter what network, and more specifically OFCOM say that 077, 078 and 079 prefixes only are mobiles.

So in short, the answer to your question is you can't tell from the number.

It's true that people can port their numbers to different networks, but I assume new numbers still follow the assigned blocks? I'm not sure about you, but most of my friends just keep a network and number rather than hopping around every year... (I changed mine recently, but maybe I'm an exception :))

Here's one site (http://www.ukphoneinfo.com) for finding where a number may well be assigned to (very useful for checking what area a national landline number is from too).
