Hi I am new to the forum I am looking for my Smith family of Sheffield Samuel Smith originated from Staffordshire, and lived in Barnsley as well as Sheffield. His wife was Mary Smith they had quite a large family Phoebe, Issac, John, Thomas, William, Honor, Annie, Samuel and Harriet. My grandfather Issac married Louisa Veneer they lived in Pitsmoors area of Sheffield I would love to find out what the area was like in 1900's Samuel was a coal miner. Kind thanks

I can find Louisa Miriam with her family on the 1881 & 1891 census and I can also find her marriage to Isaac.... but they don't seem to want to show up on the 1901 census together which would give an exact address. Do you know if they had any children between them marrying in 1894 and the 1901 census.

Hi devlin
Yes I have them on the census's but thanks for looking in 1901 Issac was living in Barnsley with his sister Phoebe Mawby as a lodger? However Louisa was living with her sister on Dolphin St Sheffield it says 'living on own means' so not sure what that means!

Don't think it means anything other than she was not employed by someone.... Issac probably stayed in Barnsley whilst working as there was more work in the pits (which were all private at that time) there than there was in Sheffield.

Good luck in your search, Smith is such a common name isn't it?
My maternal Grandma was a Smith before marrying Grandad, they lived down Attercliffe, she was born in 1889 her name was Francis. Her parents were called William and Charlotte. Her siblings were Mary (she lived in Keighley) Charlotte. Jack, Sarah, Walter,Cyril, Tommy (b1870) The youngest was Lilian born 1908, funny if we turned out to be related! I've got lots of old photo's of Grandma's siblings. :)

Hi thanks yes you never know we could be related! Thats the trouble with such a common surname, I know that my gramdfather was Thomas Smith born in 1913 Barnsley, however his father Issac was born in Staffs, Louisa was born at Apple St Sheffield.
