I have a some antiques I inherited that I want to dispose of and get the best price. Does anyone have any ideas of how best to do this locally. I've thought of hawking them round the shops and auction houses, but which would be likely to get me the best price? I know a little about antiques, but not enough to prevent me getting ripped off.
I've also thought of selling them on eBay, which might work for smaller items, but what about chairs and tables? I suspect eBay is only good for selling small postable things. If I sold the furniture by eBay does anyone know a good local delivery man who I could use?
Any advice please, maybe someone has been in the same situation.

Could try Ellis Willis and Beckett auction:

I had a look round once and there was a huge variety of stuff. A lot of tat and ex-office stuff, but some decent things too. They could maybe advise you anyway.

Getting a really good tan should be your first step if you want to flog some antiques. Makes you look nice and trustworthy. And perhaps change your name - something like 'Tinker,' 'Lovejoy' or 'Lady Jane' should do it.
Seriously though - I'd get them independantly valued first if you can by someone who's not intending to buy off you but knows their stuff. Otherwise you could get ripped off. You may have to wait until the antiques roadshow is next in town though.
Friend of mine goes to all the tag sales (car boot) sales then takes his buys to a consignement shop and doubles his money,
Nice little retirement job for him !
You could try A E Dowse and Son, they also offer free valutions not sure what day this is held on but you could give them a call to find out, I have bought many things from here.

What you have to bear in mind is that any item is only worth as much as people are prepared to pay.
A pal pf mine has an antique shop near Abbeydale Road and will not buy stuff off of anyone for more than he would pay for it at auction.
What this means is that the private seller is always at a disadvantage ,the only way to get top dollar for your goods is sell it direct to the end user via E Bay, Free ads Etc.
The only way that you will recieve good money at auction is if you have a private purchaser who is interested in your goods and is willing to outbid the dealers
