View Full Version : Where can I buy Mexican chillies???
Does anyone know where in Sheffield to buy mexican type chillies (Ancho/poblano)???? I could order them online but would like to go to a local shop.
I am running out of ideas locally - hopefully there is somewhere??
Cheers all
Kevin
I really don't think it will make very much difference what type of chillies you use, so long as you have enough of them! Here's a good place to look for varieties information: http://www.g6csy.net/chile/index.html
Check out the Database section for what is probably the best database of chile varieties anywhere! Make sure you read-up on 'Scovilles' - you don't want to substitute four Jalapenos for four Scotch Bonnets, believe me! :hihi:
Lightninboy 30-09-2008, 08:23 I grow my own Habanero chillies, quite easy to do on the kitchen window sill in direct sunlight. May be the best route unless you find a specialist ethnic food shop.
salmonbones 30-09-2008, 12:28 Where don you get the seed's to grow your own? That would be pretty cool (!)
Berberis 30-09-2008, 12:35 There is a chilli farm down south that will post them to you. Ill have a look and see if I can find their site.
Berberis 30-09-2008, 12:36 Arh here you go: http://www.southdevonchillifarm.co.uk/

Just one left now and it's almost turned Red.
You can buy a lot of chilies from Supermarkets...
hello there many thanks for the links etc - I found some dried in Tesco that you can reconstitute, and think I might order some from southdevonchillies as well.
Cheers again

On the contrary different varieties of chilli do have their own unique characteristics and flavour aside from differences in heat.
You can also try bean beanies on barber road [just up from the uni heading into walkley] they usually have a range of dried chillies. Also Morrisons have started a range of dried and bottled stuff which I'm pretty sure has minced Poblano chillies.

My wife agrees with you there, she won't cook Peruvian dishes over here because she can't get hold of the Peruvian aji chillies anywhere, and seems as though using any other variety of chilli is tantamount to sacrilege!
Mind you just noticed that the Devon chilli farm finally has the fresh ones in stock, so I can order a few bags and then she won't have any excuse for not making ceviche :)

Dizzyblonde 09-10-2008, 16:31 They do some good ones in the chinese supermarket on matilda street. Not sure of origin but they had a variety of different ones.
roryanderson 13-06-2011, 21:18 Hi don't know any shops in sheffield that do them but you can buy ancho poblano chillies online here: http://www.capsicana.co.uk
