I have nothing against SWFC indeed i support them but why on match days does every local street have to become a bloody car park...and the tram takes ages cos of the influx of supporters.

Its NOT only the streets cars are parked on grass verges, footpaths anywhere possible and our police walk past and ignore them!!

Makes me wonder what I pay my council tax for!

The best soloution would be for SWFC to sell the ground and move to a purpose built new stadium and give us back our reidential area. And yes I know the grounds been there years BUT I've lived here 40 years and the problem gets progressivley worse and NO ONE including SWFC,SCC or the police give a damn!

But semerpus, all this football traffic also brings income into the local shops, pubs, burger bars, etc.

I have the same problem when the Blades are playing at home. But it is a small sacrifice to pay.

If you have a problem with inappropriate car parking, contact your local councillor and see what might be done to alleviate this problem.

I know how you feel, I was taken shopping tonight (my car is very poorly!) and made the mistake of coming back at turf out time. They had to stop in the middle of the road, while I took all the shopping out and put it on the kerb - mind you I have to do this sometimes on a non match day.

We moved here knowing the footie ground was there but didn't realise to what extent the parking is like, having never experienced it before and neither of us being footie fans.

The ground doesn't seem to even acknowledge the community around it, the least they could do is put a fixtures listing through the door before each season so I could try and plan my life around it!

it might bring some income in but theres the litter aspect also and then men peeing in doorways up residential houses passageways etc. No one seems bother about the communtiy.

That's a really good idea - take note, Sheffield Wednesday!

Never one to support Wendy on anything, but given that the game last night was only arranged last Saturday when all the matches had finished (5.00 pm), I think they had all their work cut out selling the tickets.

Perhaps you do something proactive rather expecting to be spoonfed, like looking at the "Next Home Game" notices every time you pass the ground, or looking on the internet at their website for their fixtures, or looking in any sunday newspaper that tells you the fixtures for the next 7 days in details and have charts of the fixtures for the season or .......

Seeing as it bothers you so much, wouldn't it be easier for you too move rather than a club thats 27million in debt move?

Get real mosey. why should we move? Apart from the ****e we residents have to put up with on a saturday its a great area.

And the match may have only been arranged last week but it still was bedlam last night.

27 million in debt ? :) now you never know fingers crossed they might have to sell and move !!

I think the fixtures list is a good idea - the game caught us by surprise, and we had to cruise forever before we found a space - then decide whether to go out later and shift the car, or walk forever in the morning... it's like playing 'dude, where's my car', but on home turf :)

You should move as Hillsborough was there first. If you don't like kids don't live near a school, don't expect the school to move.

I don't want to move, and I do look at the 'next home match' board, and I do look in the paper for the fixtures list, but I still think it would be a really good idea if the club distributed a fixture list to households in the surrounding area at the start of the season - surely it wouldn't cost that much to print and distribute one with one of the local free papers (after all, we get plenty of flyers from Netto, Somerfield etc every week). There'd still be the odd game that they wouldn't know about like the playoffs, but at least you could stick it on the fridge and then have a good idea when you were likely to get a parking space.

I agree, i live off middlewood rd opposite the park and i darnt go out on match days cos i cant park when i come back. Sometimes it takes me hours to find a parking space miles from my house...

Nothing against footie, like it but its getting beyond a joke when you cant park on your own road

i dont understand why they dont open up that land accross from it on match days, it would provide loads of parkin and maybe save some hassle

You live near to me Mel77. I guess you also have the problems from the bowlers and I'm dredding the Mayfest. The Mayfest causes parking problems, but I also have to listen to the awful music all day for 2/3 days. I wouldn't mind if it was a community event, but its nothing more than a money spinner with a high entrance fee.

I don't see why I should move, I live in a community and if a business inflicts something on a community then it should give something back to it and respect the community around it. After all, when Sheffield Wednesday was trying to sell off the Middlewood training ground to Asda, it needed the support of the community as it was asking us to let the council know we had no problems with the proposed Asda and traffic congenstion if might cause! Well I didn't support it, why should I, they do nothing for me in return. They also found the time/money to put a flyer around the homes for it.

That land is owned by Tesco. They were tried to build a supermaket on there but could not get planning permission. The Owls Trust have come to a leasing agreement with Tesco to provide match day parking spaces. Apparently it will raise aroudn £100,000 per year.

I live in the triangle of streets next door to the ground, and find parking there to be a nightmare in general, let alone on match days.
I can think of two things that can be done to help this. Firstly, the streets should be marked with spaces, so that you don't have the problem of cars appearing to take up two spaces, when it is down to the cars around them coming and going. This would give the residents a better chance of finding a space.
Secondly, a permit system should be put into operation, so that anyone attempting to park on these residential streets without a permit are given a ticket. limited to match days, naturally.

rant over

What I find blooming annoying about match days is that SWFC take over the park car park meaning that park users cant use it:(

Parking in the whole SWFC area is a nightmare. I moved here knowing full well what the effect on parking is, so accordingly I don't go out in the car on match days wherever possible. I'm not happy about my street being a footie carpark but I can live with it.. What annoys me is the dangerous parking.. On reservations, crossing points, pavements... Say SWFC did move to a new stadium they could add a huge car park, charge for it and make a killing.

And, SWFC being where it is now, I bet some fans hearts sink when they think of the traffic jams they're gonna get stuck in! A quiet area off the M1 for example would be much better for everyone than an essentially residential area.

Mosey...Why the hell should I move.I'm not the jerk creating the inconvienience and public nuisance/disorder.Do you have to put up with this crap virtually once a week?
I shouldn't have to move..and you'll find you are incorrect Hillsborough wasn't there first. This was a residential area long before....

It's the damn ignorance of SWFC in failing to address any of the issues that it has on the local community.

I DO get a copy of the seasons fixtures

.........................................so I know what day I can't use my car because I'd have to park it a mile away at least,

So I can lock my passage gate so I don't get men ******* up against the wall.

So when I'm starting work at 230 I have the pleasure of leaving at 1 to catch the tram and not get stuck in traffic.

It's a disgrace that cars are parked on verges, footpaths etc and the police just ignore it.

The police should gate off each local road and only allow residents access. (They used to do this years ago!)

This was put into place some years ago and worked a treat.
My partner used to live on Shenstone Road and on match days this and the surrounding roads off Leppings Lane had barriers and a Police officer who checked your permit and only then let you on. :thumbs up:Sorted? :shakes:
Apparently, some old dear tripped over the leg of one of the said barriers and following that they vanished. There after usuall match day parking bedlam ensued.
Fears of blame/claim no doubt

Worse still is when you're not allowed down Leppings Lane untill the away fans coaches had gone.
Now that did get my back up:evil::rant:

just like to say that SWFC have been at Hillsborough for nearly 106 years 1899-2005, so I bet this is by no means a new complaint, although I do sympathise with those who are affected.

Just wondered if there are any records of resident's complaints about inappropriate car parking back in 1899?

Every one who lives in Sheffield is affected by football even if not involved in parking problems. The cost of the excessive amount of policing that is required to control the minority of yobs and louts who call themselves fans of either club is met by everyone. The disruption to traffic around the areas, the litter etc. Is it all worth it ?

thewizard
14-05-2005, 06:44
I think you will find that the football clubs be it the owls or the blades pay an amount towards policing costs. What annoys me is people who drive to work, in the olden days I could walk anywhere with no fear of cars or lorries mowing me down , now people have these contraptions, how inconsiderate. People who choose to go shopping when I do !!! Why should I queue in morrisons ? I hate people ringing other people when Im trying to ring them - why should i wait ??? Dont even get me started on parking......

......or I could just choose to work with these things, like not walking in the middle of the road, phoning friends at 4am, using the 24 hour asda or locking my gate and getting on the tram at 1pm.
There will always be a section of people that are incincvenienced in one way or another, tolerance and the ability to move about as we can are things we should be grateful for, if you dont believe me ask the people who are dying in weston park etc if they would like this "hassle".

With a wave of his wand the wizard attempts to spread sanity and love over Sheffield.

while i totally empathise with the people dying in Weston Park etc, i think the comment is a cheap shot worthy of emotional blackmail and irrelevant to this thread.

Point taken, I may have let my fingers get carried away, what I was trying to say is that although regretable its not life and death. Blaming the masses for the actions of the few is sensationalism. Hopefully when the new car park opens across from the ground the situation will ease.

Macca

The new car park wont affect the number of cars around the ground. It will simply mean more cars are able to park closer to the ground.
Those of us who live in the shadow of the ground will not see any difference.
