I don't know the cost of fish & chips today, but in the late 30's I was the errand lad for my parents & friends who stayed in the Lane Top WMC all day on bank holidays. I think the fish was 2d & the chips 1d. My memory may not be correct, I'm sure someone will say so if I'm wrong.

Glen the only fish cake you will get if you ask for "chips and cake" in Sheffield is the one you describe 2 slices of potato with varying amounts of fish in between battered and deep fryed, these are not to be confused with the rissole which is mashed potato and shredded fish mixed together shaped into small flat circle with a coating of breadcrumbs. I suppose when you were in Sheffield they used to fry the chips and fish in beef dripping the proper way, now they just boil them in vegetable oil for a while, they don`t even look brown like the old days.

That's right, john65 - proper fishcakes have two slices of potato with fish in the middle. In my experience they are hard to get outside South Yorkshire. Most chip shops in North Lincs. sell rissoles and call them fishcakes. But there is one place in Lincoln that sells proper fishcakes - but they call them fritters.

Funny lot in Lincoln...;)

There was someone on here who knew a sheffield couple who have a chipshop in Hamilton. which is the next city to ours. So we've been a few times now, and if you ask they will make the fishcakes for you. Which reminds me we've told friend's we'll take them, they're originally from Manchester, and never heard of them. So we had better ring them ahead of time and order them:thumbsup:

Lol nothing finer than a "proppa fishcake"!

In more recent years you are now able to buy the "proppa fishcake" in Skegness and Ingoldmells.....you have to ask for a YORKSHIRE Fishcake.. if you ask for a fishcake..ya gets a rissole!!

Never been to a chippy in other towns...is it only in Yorkshire (apart from towns mentioned above) that you get a proppa fishcake??? How far across Yorkshire does this wonderful piece of food exist??

I'm told there's a chippie at Crookes, near the Grindstone (?) that sells chips cooked in dripping. Not tried 'em myself, but they come highly recommended. I think the place is only open for a couple of hours at tea-time, though.....

Yep, it's a proper old-school chippy called Broomheads - dinner and tea only! Mind you, it's years since I lived round there so I'd be interested to know if it's still there.

Chip shops in Bradford still mostly seem to use dripping. They're so much nicer, it's ridiculous!

In the 60s we went to live in Darlington for a while and couldn't get proper fishcakes anywhere. My mother talked to the local chippy and they invited her behind the counter to make some. They then started selling them, but don't think it passed on to other chippies.

I kinow this is an old thread but !

I'd been out of the country for about 25 years and had a stop over in Blackpool on route to a Ski trip in Italy.

First order of the day was to find a Chip Shop, and once in one I asked "whats a fishcake"

The guy promptly replied "It's not a Yorkshire fish cake if that's what you mean"

Guess I hadn't lost as much of my accent as I thought :-)

Sadly my mum passed away in 2008 but up to then whenever we visited her at the weekend she always used to treat us to Fish and Chips from The Admiral chippie on Burley Moor Road.(at the end of the parade of shops near the Burley pub)

They sold the infamous Sheffield Fish Cakes - whether they still do or not I don't know but both my daughters (raised in Leicestershire) both fell in love with them and even if they didn't come with us sometimes they insisted I take them back a Sheffield Fish Cake - they reckoned even warmed up in a red hot oven they were still better than anything that was offered by the local shops.

So....try The Admiral - even without the fishcakes I remember it being one hell of a chippie. I think they opened a second shop 'Admiral 2' in Mosborough

All this talk of Sheffield fishcakes is making me bloody hungry...

Haven't had one in years. There used to be a chippy on Valley Road that sold damn good fishcakes but their chips were a tad disappointing, however. The nearest Parisian equivalent to a fishcake is a rather poor imitation of the maligned "rissole" mentioned above.
But... recently they've started to sell real fish fingers here, under the "Capitaine Igloo" brand, and they are very good, I would say 99% like the real item. So, it's now possible to make fish finger butties as my mate Neil used to make them - recipe;
two slices of white bread;
three fish fingers;
one slice of that plastic-like cheese;
one slice of tomato;
a generous blob of Hellmans' mayonnaise (also available here, imported)
(Salad cream is much better, but unobtainable here)

Drive around the USA and you'll see signs outside certain places advertising fish and chips, the fish is quite often edible but the chips are actually french fries which are usually frozen and thrown into hot oil.

Nathans do nice chips though and their sausage is not bad.

We go to Canada, St. Andrews in New Brunswick every year for two months to escape the Florida heat and Fish and Chips are advertised but I've tried them all and they're awful, be warned.

There was a little place which looked an ideal spot for an English food place and I was very tempted to buy it and make proper fish and chips, Sheffield pancakes and high teas with a proper cuppa in a teapot with scones,etc. home made jam and marmalade.

It turned out it belonged to the Council and me not being Canadian it was a no,no.

Around the Jacksonville area down to St. Augustine Florida there are many people who came from Menorca and some have food shops. I went into one and asked why they don't sell MAHONAISE which is the real stuff.

It was a sauce made by a French chef to celebrate their victory over us when they chucked us out of the best natural harbour in the Med, Mahon. A place I know well.

Don't need no fish and chips when you're in New Brunswick!

They got their own specialities, lobster rolls, chowder, and when I was there a few years ago you could get a fresh whole steamed lobster from the dock for less than the price a large pizza!

Which dock are you talking about, St John?

In New Brunswick the dockside lobster shack was in Alma (I think) and in Nova Scotia we used to pick them up at the town dock in Stellarton (New Glasgow)

Since eating lobster there, I have never ordered it again here in Toronto, something about freshness or shipping.

But I'll never forget those fishcakes in Sheffield. When I was a kid I used to remind myself of the order by singing "three and a fishcake - three times".

A weird connection here.

I was in northern New Brunswick with my son, and we stopped at a roadstand for burgers, mile s from anywhere. I heard this distinctive noise coming from out back that I hadn't heard since I was a kid. I asked the young girl serving what it was. She took me through the kitchen and there it was!!

An old iron potato rumbler, which I used to work beside at our local chip shop when I was a kid.

The rumbler grated off the peel and we used to pick out the eyes with a small knife before they went under the chopper.

How that old machine ever got up there would be an interesting story, but it was like hearing a familiar song for the first time in 60 years or so.

Let's not forget, in Sheffield it's not 'fish and chips' , it's 'chips'n'fish'

If I was particularly hungry and feeling a bit flush it used to be 'chips fish'n'a caake wi scraps' and maybe a bottle of Tizer or dandelion and burdock. Ate the lot including the fish skin. Used to stay skinny then:(
