We have a cute little kitten hes now 9 weeks old, and he seems to have a cold, we got him just over a week ago from Thornberry animal sanctuary and within a few days got a runny eye and then started with the sneezing a few little coughs.

We called the sanctuary and they have given us some cream for his eyes and some antibiotics, both of which he is very reluctant to have i might add.

What is worrying me is that we are giving him the cream but not sure if its doing any good, the eye that is the worst is open but theres a creamy yellowy film on his eye, which im not sure is his inner eyelid or if it is gunk from his eye, either way when i clean his eyes with cotton wool and warm water it doesnt budge. I was just wondering if anyone can shed a bit of light on this, hes still eating well so theres not a problem there.

He is due back at the Sanctuary on thursday to see the vet, should i just carry on with the medication till then or do you think maybe i should call the sanctuary sooner than that to see what to do with him.

Hi just to let you know we took him to the vets this morning and she said that he had conjunctivitis and this had pretty much causes his eye to burst, the gunk on his eye was the fluid that had come out of his eye, so they operated on him to remove his eye but he didnt wake up from the anaesthetic, he was such a lovely little thing, and we had only had him 9 days but we were still so attached to him...

Thanks everyone, it was totally unexpected, apart from the gungy eye and the coldyness he was happy enough, running about playing still eating his food and whatnot, he probably just wasnt strong enough to wake up

Oh the poor baby- I am so sorry for you Susie. The little kitten we rescued last week was suffering from cat flu and has an ulcerated eye but fingers crossed, she is making really good progress. They are so vulnerable at this age that you can never predict how things will turn out. In our case, she was given an injection antibiotic that lasts 2 weeks and she's being really good letting us give her the eye ointment, but it defintely takes two of us to do it properly. She has some joint problems too, probably part of the flu, so we're going to adopt her and keep her as in indoor cat.

I hope this doesnt put you off getting another kitten Susie - I'm sure your little one touched your heart for the brief time she was with you and fingers crossed, there'll be another needing your love and affection. RIP, little one.
