Hi again..
someone suggested app local tradesman, to get help with the rescue turtle pond (2 more coming late mon) but not sure how to go about it etc. Also with a large shed i was given, needs some repair and insulating and wiring up etc. i was hoping to get it done for next spring, so wasnt really able to take in any more large reptiles, but with another Ig coming yesterday and hating to turn down animals i would love it to be done sooner..

Been taking in animals for over 10 years, but i usually kept it low key or at a certain level, but with food and electric prices rising, im needing to get work done etc as low cost as possible. Its cost me a small fortune in the past couple of months on vets bills and making new vivs..

some tips or ideas would be great!

I'll keep my eye out for you, cos love good causes. Dan could be your man to do lecky stuff 078493339390, he's young, funny, loves turtles and is a qualified trichian...all the cert's etc. Would be a little job for him.
Tell him mum told you, I doubt if he'd charge full for a good cause. He's got a turtle with a snortle thing on it's nose, who has grown very big but he loves it!

ah thanks..the turtle pond is priority #1 so all 6 can overwinter at the bottom, that very urgent before the end of oct at the v v latest and times running out, the smaller origonal ones i could have coped with in the house but some are very big, and with another ig, and spare emergency vivs for sudden arrivals, its better for me and the turtles to be at the bottom of a pond, the shed needs 2 layers of inuslation and some wood replaced as well as being on breeze blocks so its off the ground, so i had planned on for spring..im the worst at diy!

So you need around 14 sheets of thermal sandwiched between ply in your shed? and a few bits of spare treated planks for repair? We've got bits of fencing that's been treated may be too thick for your cause though, but your welcome to it. Also York stone walling for pond? Dunno if it helps but it's here! Babe if you want owt just Pm.

Well at the moment, its warmer OUTSIDE of the shed lol. its only partly erected, 4 sides, but the bottom when we took it down and collected had rotted away a little..its a 10x8 shed at the bottom of the garden. and needs to be fenced there, as its the local dumping ground for the other houses at the back and where local chavs hang around!

yes please for the stone walling, it will be ideal, infact for that sooner the better, as i dont have any around the small quaranteen turtle pond, and another 2 are coming from down south tonight...the ones i had, i had to make higher around pond 1, as one of the v large turtles could climb like you wouldnt belive, a real ninja turtle lol.

anything of use wont be wasted, at the moment sat inside the vw camper is a smaller shed, for lorna's rescued/rehomed ferrets!!!

Hi I before I start this is not in anyway a criticism and my comments are for both you and the animals welfare.

Are you sure you are not taking on far too much for you too handle as you seem to have several projects on the go at once and dont seem to be getting anywhere fast with any.

I do rescue reptiles when I am asked to do so but I learned a long time ago that taking on too much not only stresses me and the other half out but means I cant give full attention to all the rescues that I have.

Please dont feel you have to house everything that is offered to you, I have ties with a large network of rescuers and I will put you in contact with them if you wish.

If you would like any help from me feel free to pm me.

Hi
I know what you are saying, that happened about 5 years ago, when i was doing too much..and now i turn most things away etc
the turtle pond was something i had been planning to do anyway, but time flies and would be better to be done early than late, i had taken 2 v large turtles in, with a promise from the owners her big strong son and family would help..but it seems, now rid of the turtles, they wont!

I then thought if i can get the shed done a bit sooner, its better than in the spring when the weather is usually worse.

'Ghetto' was brought back from the edge of death...from someone who wouldnt take advice for weeks even though they kept asking me what to do...they dumped it on us, when they told me to go out, buy all the correct eq they needed etc. and would give me what it cost...they didnt want to pay the 30 odd quid for the eq, or the vets fee i said he needed...so they said keep it....its a right Chav of a lizard, literally!! just like the home it came from..who couldnt....NO WOULDNT pay for the animal as they said, and then next day went out and got the biggest rottie to act tough on the estate..

I must say though i'm getting very tempted into getting an Iggy. I would just have to convince my other half but it looks like the terminator film just did it for me she saw the one on their and loved it.

Hi I was just taking a look at your vivs. Have you thought about making a viv wall by fixing fitted shelving directly to the walls and using glass backing Im in the process of building mine in my spare room when im done i'll have about 30-40 vivs with some having sliding bariers to make them bigger and smaller as required. This also helps to regulate temps at an ambient.

Just remember to to seperate them into different temp requirements if you'd like some ideas let me know.

you got any fotos? im useless at making vivs, the ones i made were my 1st attempt but the tall tokay ones have a major problem...i cant open them much, i should have gone with opening doors not sliding..hehe lesson learnt!

Igs are cool, but really nasty and can do some serious damage if not tamed down, my 2 big uns are soft as brushes but took lots of work to get them like that!

Ha Ha trust me nothing gets much worse than a nile monitor thats not been handled or about 3 years and you have to put your ungloved hand in and get him out. Or my bosc that refuses to tame.

But this sounds crazy but at least they let go not like the 14 inch tokay that bit my finger and it went down to the bone and they big bugger took 20 minutes to let go and that was only with two drops of vodka.

My stack is in process at the moment but when its finished in about 2009 lol I'll put pictures up.

They will look like vivs in the exotics shops, They are practical neat and easy to maintain.

And Im sure I know your mrs

How big are you wanting the pond to be?

My sis/bro-in-law has a mahoosive pond that they plan to remove. The previous owners kept Koi I think. So big pond, pumps and who knows what else may be available from them if you have space for it!

Hi
speaking to turtle people (i had never rescued them until earlier this year so im learning all the time about them), to over winter where they hibernate at the bottom in the mud etc instead of brought in to the house in small fish tanks, it has to be a depth of at least 3 foot, 4 is better and i want a pond about 12' in lenth, by about 6' wide. Some of the turtles i have taken in are pretty huge, hence need a large pond. I have 6 at the moment, inc the 2 that came at the weekend, but a larger pond means i have room for more should the come...and no doubt they will! They are starting to slow down now...and come end of oct they will be ready to hibernate. A plastic formed pond isnt deep enough, the one i have at the moment is 1.5 at the deepest.

cheers

Depends on the pond... reckon this one is 5-6 foot at it's deepest point.

I'll try and get some measurements for you.

If they hibernate at bottom of pond, what do they do about air? Must surface every so often surely?

thanks, if its that thick lining material, even if i go only to 4' its ideal.

good point..i belive they shut the body down being coldblooded. its what they do to survive here when they got dumped in park ponds etc after the ninja turtle craze.

I know the ones i have, at night when alseep, come up for a breath a few times in the night.

found this on google about the type of have.

Different kinds of turtles hibernate in different ways. Most water turtles go deep into the pond and snuggle down into some mud and leaves at the bottom. Then they let themselves get cold. Their bodies slow down so they don't need to eat anymore. Their hearts slow down too so that they beat only once every few minutes. They stop breathing through their lungs. Because their bodies are running at such a slow speed, they don't need much oxygen, but they do need some. They can get the small amount of oxygen they need from the water. It sinks in through some specialized skin cells that are just inside the tail opening. That's right! They "breathe" through their tails! Water turtles can stay like this for two or three months.

When turtles are hibernating, they are in danger. They are not able to run away from animals that might want to eat them. They try to find a place that will be safe from predators like dogs or raccoons. Another bad thing that can happen is that they can freeze to death. If the water in the pond freezes all the way down to the bottom of the pond, the turtles that are hibernating there will die. If the ground freezes deeply around hibernating box turtles, they will die too. But that doesn't usually happen. If a pond is deep, only the top part of it will freeze solid and there will be water underneath the ice. Then the turtles will be safe. And the box turtles are usually safe too, because only the top layer of the ground will freeze. The turtles will stay deeper down where the dirt doesn't freeze.

___
hence my pond has to be at least 3', and deeper the better! With the ones i have, being adults and large, overwinter in a pond is natural and better for them.
cheers

Thousands of turtles prepare for winter by going deep into the water or by digging a deep burrow. They will slow down and hibernate for as long as the weather is cold. Then when the spring comes, the turtles will warm up and become active again. Once again, they will look for nice warm places to sit and enjoy the sun.
