View Full Version : Supertram Annoyance
mikeybaby72 28-09-2008, 09:12 Has anyone else been thoroughly annoyed by people crowding up to the doors at Supertram stops in a desperate attempt to be the first ones to get on. Do they not realise that by preventing others from getting off, that they're actually slowing Everything down???? :loopy:
I get really annoyed at this and ALWAYS say something in a loud voice..... whilst aiming my words in a very general direction. Have these people got no brains???  :help:

anyone else had a similar experience??? :suspect:
Greybeard 28-09-2008, 09:48 Imagine what it would be like if people stopped using their cars in favour of the tram.
Blood everywhere :hihi:

I know that all too well....having lived in London and having to go to work on the tube. Even then though - considering the amount of tourists - there was still tube etiquette where people stood to the side to allow those getting off to get off before they got on.....it isn't rocket science through really is it.
BUT there is something unique and different about the tube that you don't get from the tram. :D

Nearly every time I try to get off at the Cathedral at tea-time (coming from hillsborough direction). I find it very annoying too!
the snowman 28-09-2008, 16:30 I think it's overdue now to be renamed as Tram :hihi:
Lucy-Lastic 28-09-2008, 16:34 I normally say to my kids in a loudish voice 'let the people off the tram first then there will be space to get on' - this normally stops the twonks pushing their way on for long enough to let the people off first.
Ms Macbeth 28-09-2008, 16:35 The height of stupidity! I make sure I'm firmly planted and just keep going as I step off the tram. Being fairly large, and white haired - they probably think I'm a silly old bat, but it works! I do loud voiced disapproval and/or muttering sometimes too. :hihi:
I also stand back to let people off, before I get on, much to the disgust of some of the people behind who seem to think its going to leave without them. :loopy:
tweetypie 28-09-2008, 16:38 yes so annoying-when you can't get off the tram for people trying to get on! And there is no queuing order either. I hate it even more when people push in to get on the bus and i end up standing when i would have had a seat!
SallyLaLaLa 28-09-2008, 17:16 try the tube in rush hour, trams are tame!
That's not true, everbody lets everyone off first on the tube and if you try to push on first you get shoved out of the way because you're rude.
I do agree with the OP that this is really annoying. It's just common sense to let people off first.
better tram than bus if it was cheaper and more lines.
puddinburner 28-09-2008, 18:00 Have no idea why people do this? The driver is watching the doors at all times and will NOT set off till everyone's on and off....in theory.
He/ she, cannot risk trapping anyone in doors or a separation of children.:hihi:
Just madness...THERE'S NO NEED!!!!!
What always amases me is the thick idiots (and I mean that ) who stand in the same place every day on the stop inbtween the cross hatching and have to walk to the door of the tram. They havent worked out that the cross hatching is where the door will be - more or less.
hels1977 29-09-2008, 14:28 It's the same on the trains. The vast majority of people completely fail to grasp that standing to the side allows people to alight faster and them embark faster. The way some people act you'd think it was a life and death situation that they must get on and get a seat. If you stand in front of me when I am getting off a train where there is ample space to move to the side, you will get pushed out the way I'm afraid. :hihi:
Ousetunes 29-09-2008, 14:34 This irks me.
You go to the bank and there are three (cashier) windows and let's say two of them are open. A person each being attended to.
In front of you, a small queue. Let's say two people. But where do they stand? Right in front of the doors. So you stand there blocking the entrance and someone behind you then tries to squeeze inside.
In front of person number one in the queue, acres and acres of SPACE! But no; the numpty stands there oblivious to the queue forming behind him now heading out onto the wet pavement and inclement weather.
2 points:
1/ some people stand in between the cross-hatching because the shelter does not reach it and they may want to stay away from rain/wind/etc.
2/ This rushing to the doors wouldn't happen if people actually queued just as if the trams were busses (only with several doors, so several ques or keeping an eye on who's there before you)
It seems that people have used the tram as an excuse to stop following the great English tradition of civilised queuing... so now when I'm first in line I stand on the cross-hatching and then hold the hordes (whenever I can) until people have come off before going in myself... I have heard some people getting frustrated behind me but that's their problem.
Being Spanish I know all the tricks on how to get in quickly without queuing but the point is: I LOVED THE ENGLISH POLITENESS AND WISHED SPAIN WAS MORE LIKE THIS, NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND (sigh)
LizG2008 29-09-2008, 15:09 They havent worked out that the cross hatching is where the door will be - more or less.
Im sure plenty of tham have but are either
a) useing the shelter as already suggested
b) slightly more chilled out about it and really dont care who gets on first
or
c) dont want to block the doors for everyone getting off the tram like those people who cluster right on the hatching.
SYorksDeano 29-09-2008, 20:37 I am so glad someone mentioned this. On Saturday I lost me temper a tiny bit while on the tram going to Meadowhell. Noone would move away from the door when I wanted to get on, and the didn't want to get off. A few will you move out of the ****ing ways worked. Plenty of space on the tram so god knows why they had to stand at the door

That's All well and good if you can afford one!!!!
:banana::banana::banana::banana:
HarrietStar 27-08-2009, 12:20 I stand just to the side of the hatchings and always let people off first, it's not that hard, but it does hurt when people elbow and jostle from behind because they want to push on
chickywiggle 27-08-2009, 12:37 what REALLLY annoys me is people who get to the tram stop after you - 9 times out of 10 this is at Middlewood and includes a bus load of people - and PUSH to get on before you!!
Sketty24 27-08-2009, 13:19 I hate this so much. I always step aside, unless there's only a couple of people getting off and we can easily pass each other without obstruction.
Has anyone else noticed the idiots who go to press the buttons on the doors when the trams not actually at the stop yet (say, if there's traffic lights and a car in front.) And they stand there pressing it and looking towards the driver angrily when it doesn't open. Oh, how they amuse me.
Numpty123 27-08-2009, 15:36 try the tube in rush hour, trams are tame!
On the tube everybody lets people off first. If you don't you will get pushed firmly out the way.
NewUpNorf 27-08-2009, 15:41 Hahahah I thought it was just me!! Having grown up using the tube, when I first moved here I was getting on a tram and naturally stood to the side to let people off... and was nearly trampled by people shoving to get on! The next day I was on my way into town and getting off the tram and couldnt actually get off for the people barging their way on- at least 10 people got on before I could elbow and 'excuse' my way through! Whats that all about!?!
Sketty24 27-08-2009, 17:19 Meadowhall stop is the worst. I just make sure my elbows are firm and doing so good digging when I try and get off the tram in those crowds.
kt123456x 27-08-2009, 19:05 I have to experience this everyday and it drives me mad.
I have heared the ticket guys shouting a few times to let people of before others start to get on which seems to work a bit. What a sorry state of affairs it is when people are incapible of queing patiently on their own without anyone directing them.
I would still however prefer to travel on the tram than the bus anyday. This may be the only public transport system in the country whose flaws are down to the passengers and not the management ha ha.
FallenAngel6 27-08-2009, 19:54 I hate it!!! When i was 30+ weeks pregnant i used to have to push myself as far to the side as i could or i'd get pushed i even got an elbow in my side on the way to hospital for a scan!!!! Luckily it wasnt hard. I also was made to stand when i was about 35 weeks pregnant even though people could see i was heavily prgnant and very uncomfortable!
And NOW i have people pushing past the pram or not giving me enough space to get off the tram or get out of peoples way on the tram.
I think its selfish and i detest public transport cant wait till i can drive.

Well... how about going up to the prats sitting in the seats reserved for OAPs, pregnant women and the like and asking them to move? You've got a right to sit there unless there's already someone with an obvious need...
ECCOnoob 28-08-2009, 12:34 ....get.....a.......life......
Peacelily 30-08-2009, 18:54 I take great pleasure in being at the front of the queue for the tram and letting people off before I get on, I can hear the people behind me getting annoyed, its a great stress buster!!!!!!
If they try to push past then I just make sure I block them! lol
Caitlin09 30-08-2009, 19:12 I hate this too! I stand blocking the doors with my pram until the idiots shift. Noone has got past me yet :hihi:
Sheff2006 30-08-2009, 19:36 The same method works for Supertram as what does on the London Underground - stand at the extreme ends of the platform and you have more chance of getting on. Works for me in Sheffield and in London.
Im a regular tram user and have used this method for years. Next time when you are in the city centre just take a look at the crowds of people at the tram stops, they usually bunch together in the middle of the platform just like on the Underground. Then they all run together for the nearest doors which are not the ones at the very ends of the tram!
