BEX_DEVJAM 07-03-2005, 16:56 To all bands- Sheffield's finest free festival is looking for bands and I thought that you should be the first one's to know! telling me your band's name, a contact name, a contact address and phone number and a brief description of the band. I will then send you an application form to be returned (with a demo) by FRIDAY 29TH APRIL.
I look forward to hearing from you soon,

The dance tent was pretty disappointing last year. Nobody was really 'avin it.
Charlie369 14-03-2005, 10:20 when is it going to be?
BEX_DEVJAM 14-03-2005, 12:24 Your right, no one was really 'having it' in the dance tent, but I'm afraid this was down to the crowd- not the dj's! we had all the residents from UG and tuesday club so the line up wasn't that poor. This year I'm gonna be mixing it up a bit more in the dj tent- so hopefully it will be more to your liking! Bex
did you get me email yet bex?
Hi Bex..
Its Chris, i played first (reggae) in the dance tent last year. To be honest, and in my puddle poor opinion, it was too loud in the dance tent. I'm as guilty as anyone else, but DJs just tend to turn it up to 11 because they're playing records they love, and it is quite enough to scare most people off. I didnt spend much time in there myself because I had invited loads of friends down, we actually wanted to talk, so we sat outside. If it had been a little quieter, we would have loved to sit on the grass in the dance tent, and had a boogie when we felt like it.
My advice is, ask the DJs to keep it down (within reason) and up the volume when enough people are dancing.
Looking forward to this years do!
nicely chris. xo
so that was you playing all the nice reggae last year, well done,me and my mate danced about with a staff for abit
i think it should be kept loud tho :D
ah cheers man! were you the one drinking Stella at ten to noon? :-)
Being into reggae and dub i'm always swooning at sound systems loud enough to kill yer granny, believe me, at night I think it is the only way to go.. but my thoughts were that at a daytime do, you need to entice people in first, before you turn it up all the way. Its just the nature of a daytime dance vs. a nighttime dance.. See what the management say about that though :help:
Disco_Cat 15-03-2005, 13:26 I thought I was getting old.
Those damn kids and their crazy boom-boom music eh.
cellarhigh 15-03-2005, 13:48 BEX! sam tells me he tried to pick an application form up off you the other day and you said we'd already applied! :D that was me (david) by email but just wanted to say if its easier for you to give it to sam then thats fine with me. We didn't actually realised you knew him cause he's only been in the band like four months now! Cool guy tho he's made us sound so much better.
Cheers!
David
Bex you should try and catch Cellarhigh play if you havent already.. they'd be ACE for the DEV JAM.

any mp3 samples available of ANY of these bands?
Yodameister 12-05-2005, 19:03 I was moving house all day for this last year.
Will try and make it down and maybe drag some other forumers or even some non forumers along.

I can only speak for Two Hats and Do$ch, yes here :-
Two Hats (http://www.borracho.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/2hats/)
Do$ch (http://www.dosch-uk.com/sounds.htm)
I'd like to point out that these tracks are not fully blown studio recordings, just demos for getting gigs.
For my part the Two Hats tunes I recorded on my Digital Portastudio, in a hurry to get a demo together to apply for this show.
Sheffette 12-05-2005, 19:20 Wot - no Mybe?
carcrash 13-05-2005, 04:46 If you go to www.soundaloud.com you will find 9 or 10 of the bands that are playing regestered there with profiles and links to their websites or you could try http://www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/music/rawtalent/bands/index.shtml
which does pretty much the same thing
Disco_Cat 13-05-2005, 08:26 www.allhailthebison.com
for Bison Mp3's
carcrash 13-05-2005, 09:54 Bison are good, Watch out for Mothership they have not been together long and they are getting some very good reviews. They played the Earl a couple of weeks ago and were very impressive
i will check out any mp3's that are available...then be back with my HONEST opinion ;)
if its all bands tryin to be oasis again then i wont be impressed haha.. i hate whinging strum-a-rama.
Disco_Cat 13-05-2005, 12:34 I think you'd struggle to find a band that was more of a complete oppostie to Oasis then Bison are.
carcrash 13-05-2005, 12:51 I've seen 13 of the bands on the list and the only one who are anywhere near what oasis do are Daybreak. They are a rock indie sort of band with great melodies. they headlined last years Dev Jam.
Bison 8 or 9 piece ska band and bloody good fun. A bit of a nightmare to sound engineer for as most of them can sing and play each other instruments
two hats - liked the instrumental, but i can only judge by the one song on the site....laid back..err jazz blues ? lol (im crap at putting people in genres)... i dont listen to laid back music but i didnt NOT enjoy it and im sure people who like that style will eat it up :) i picture it being played in a badly lit blues club thats filled with smoke haha.
Do$ch - more for me, bluesy rock, guitar sound straight from the 60's and some nice dirty gravely vocals.
both quite suprising....both unique.... i'll have to check out some of the other bands and might pop down.
Disco_Cat 13-05-2005, 20:20 Is their going to be a beer/snakebite tent at this shindig?
I've managed to always miss this so may pop down this year. I'm quite intrigued by Mothership ..
theimposter 14-05-2005, 13:35 Anybody know what time the bands are on?
I defo wanna see Chuck & Champion Kickboxer
WallBuilder 14-05-2005, 22:37 I'll probably be seen lurking in the area and it would be nice to have an idea as to when the various bands are playing as three of them sound very entertaining, I'm not going to say which I like as they may sound rreally naff live.
You never know weather permitting I may even be in my forum tea-shirt.

???? how do you count poeple on devonshire green????
carcrash 17-05-2005, 13:31 I've got the list, I'm stagemanaging the day. I think everything is confirmed and all the times are correct so I will double check and post it on here
carcrash 17-05-2005, 13:34 some changes needed, will repost later
I've been told the sound quality was poor last year. As any improvements been made this year?
carcrash 18-05-2005, 17:35 I thought the sound quality was pretty good last year but I was at the side of the stage for most of the day so I heard mostly the monitor mix.
It is difficult for the sound engineer to get a decent sound as none of the bands get to soundcheck but last year i thought went pretty well. There was a bit of a problem with one band whos amps had a load of problems with feedback.
This is the line up.
2:00-12.20=BABY PINK STAR
12:30-12:50= TWO HATS
13.00-13.20= THE AGENTS
13.30-13.50= ANTHONY'S BIG ACHEIVMENT
14.00-14.20= CHUCK
14.35-14.55= SILVERWHEEL
15.10-15.30= CHAMPION KICKBOXER
15.45-16.05= BHUNA
16.20-16.40= ORMONDROYD
16.55-17.15= BISON
17.30-17.50= DAYBREAK
18.05-18.25= MOTHERSHIP
18.40-19.00= DO$CH
19.15-19.35= DANGERLUST
19.50-20.20=PRETTY YOUNG THINGS
20.30-21.00=ECANASIA
merrymaiden 19-05-2005, 11:40 Dev. Jam- like a mini mini mini mini festival...might be the closest thing I'll get to Leeds this year ;-)
Always good to see a few new bands anyway, I think I'll be there
cellarhigh 28-05-2005, 15:39 bad news and good news...
bad news is that 'bison' have unfortunately had to pull out...
good news is that CELLARHIGH are replacing them! Its alternative funk rock with a range of influences from a band thats supported the kaiser cheifs, soundexplosion and blackbud!
website and details here: http://cellarhigh.tripod.com
Line up looks good but I cant help wondering where Corleone are?
They are my favourite Sheffield band at the moment, a much fresher sound than a lot of acts around at the moment..
definitely worth checking out, or even booking for this if its not too late.
Has anyone else heard these? if so what are your thoughts..?
woo yay! Ormondroyd! Saw these at last years DevJam, and I must say it was rather an odd experience!
WHAT BISON HAVE PULLED OUT!?!?!?!?!??!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

muddycoffee 02-06-2005, 15:35 I would like to remind all regular forummers, that I am due on stage at 12.30 in the Two Hats, where I am the tapdancing, washboard and tuba player.
So far I am very pleased with the communication and organisation of the event, I have recieved the artist pack with the plan of the site and schedule and can't wait. Web site looks fab too..

I'm goin to be there from 10.30 ish. If anybody from Sheffield forum does come along come and say hello. I will be the big bloke at the side of the stage complaining about bands not turning up on time

Bex..... when is this happening?
WallBuilder 04-06-2005, 20:55 I went along to the festival and was there from 11.30 till 5.10 and thought it was great fun. Started off sitting on the wall behind the main tent and got surrounded by a largish group of little 'munchkins' as I was obviously sitting in their regular spot. Not in the least perturbed as they sat either side of me and stood in front of me talking over and past me, eventually it dawned on them that I wasn't about to move they shambled off to another section.
I thought the first band were somewhat vocally challenged [I'm being polite] and when Two Hats started up I moved round so could peer in through the opening and see Muddycoffee in action, they were very good and it was just a shame that audience numbers were fairly low as the place was still pretty deserted.
Kept on mooching around and had a nice surprise when nature called and I had to use the porta-loo's they were clean and didn't smell but it was only three in the afternoon at this time.
The other band i thoroughly enjoyed was one with a female fiddle player I think she was called Anna. However the music overall was of a good standard and I think I heard nine bands and none of them had me cringing much.
On the way home I went down past the Corporation and was amazed at all the cute little munchkins in black that were hanging around there. I know it was kiddy-corp but they did look 'sweet' little four foot rockers and bikers.
I heard the Walkley festival being mentioned more than once does anyone know where that is going to be held and times etc.
muddycoffee 05-06-2005, 19:29 Thanks to devonshire jam for a great gig experience for us. Well organised, Carcrash and his people were helpful and efficient, and the PA was superb.
Pictures from our set are here.. Two Hats At the Devonshire Jam 2005 (http://www.borracho.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/2hats/hats-dev-jam/devJam05.htm)
I'm the tall one with the checked shirt and the keyboards..
If you follow the link back to the main page you can hear two of our songs which we recorded in April, and played at the gig.
Thanks to Bish From FC Dog UK for taking the pics..
noisyandy 05-06-2005, 20:45 You can reciprocate by taking the pics at our gig at the Notty House on the 11th June :)
Glad to hear the gig went well, hope none of my cymbals are cracked, I know how hard Pat likes to hit them ;)
muddycoffee 05-06-2005, 20:53 Andy, of course I will. I have, as you know, taken loads of pics of you guys, and am happy to take more until the film / memory runs out. Bring all your cameras..
I want to hear your dual pedal, nosebag ( sorry nailbag's ) new bass and curley wurley's new sound..
noisyandy 05-06-2005, 21:01 Steve, you are indeed our official photographerand my pc is filled with fantastic pics you've taken for us in action :)
To anybody who isn't busy next Saturday, there's several bands on at the Notty House in Broomhill, I think kick-off is at 6-ish. If you want to see a band play with their new double kick pedals, bass guitars and distortion pedals (and almost certainly make a complete balls-up of it), then get there for about half 9 to 10! :D
It does appear that live music is getting stronger in Sheffield, with more pubs and clubs willing to put on bands. Anyone have any news of developments at the Cricketers on Bramall Lane? I heard they were putting bands on and gave them a cd, but I've not seen owt about any bands appearing there...

I find it a really horribly intrusive thing for any website designer to dictate to me how big I want my browser window to be. I just clicked on the jam jar on that site and got a new window opened at full screen.
I closed it before it had finished loading.

Dear LesleyB,
please open one of mine, they are not as flash but will work in any size.. . . . Rock - Reunited (http://www.rockreunited.co.uk/)

Thank you for your feedback on Dev Jam 05!!
Devonshire Jam is organised by an incredibly dedicated team of student volunteers from Hallam Volunteering at Sheffield Hallam University Union of Students.
They have worked solidly since September raising the funds to put on the event... organising fundraising auctions, pub crawls and speed dates to name a few! Thank you to everyone who donated! We also had support from some of our suppliers who helped us out with some favourable deals.
The volunteers were extremely passionate about putting on a free event for the community in the heart of Sheffield and I think they did a brilliant job!
I hope that everyone who came down had a fantastic day and we would welcome your feedback on our event. You can email us on hallamvolunteering@shu.ac.uk
I personally would like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers and performers who gave up so much time for free... especially Nel and Bex who organised the whole thing from start to finish!!
If you wanna check out some photos from the day... go visit our website (I can't post the address... perhaps someone can do it for me!) ... they should be up on Wednesday!
Jayne
PS We are very grateful to Mark for donating his time (for the 2nd year running) and designing our website for free. We asked for a simple Flash based website... but he also very kindly produced us an accessible text only version of the site. Thanks Mark!
carcrash 06-06-2005, 13:58 That was hard work but it was the best organised gig I've been involved with. Great day out, very few mistakes and only one band member went missing

Sorry LesleyB, that you didn't like what I did there and felt it better to close your browser than check out the website in all its strawberry conserve flavoured glory... I hope it didn't put you off going to the Jam, which was a great event with much fun had by all!
There now follows shameless justification for use of said pop-up window:
With self contained Flash presentation websites for a captive audience it's often preferable to hide browser navigation and menu tools which is why I made it a full screen pop-up window that only appears when you click the button for it. It's not like it was done in an underhand way like those awful annoying pop-ups for stuff you don't want to know about.
I felt it was better for presentation purposes of the self-contained Flash part of the website to have a full-size pop-up window that would fit any screen mode rather than have it in a smaller pop-up window that might appear confusing and be overlooked (as I had done it originally btw) or in the original browser window, where someone with a lower screen mode might have scroll bars all over the place. The Flash element is a static 700x500 pixels you see, so anyone with a screen mode of 800x600 would get the scroll bars if it was in the original browser window.
The site doesn't open in Internet Explorers horrid & hated 'Full Screen' mode by the way, just in a browser window that takes up the full size of the application area whatever your screen resolution... there is a difference, honest! With the pop-up window like the one I used it *should* still allow you access to the Windows taskbar etc (if indeed you are using Windows)... and the close and minimize buttons are still there if you want to shut it down... which you did without problem I gather ;)
I guess I should have made the pop-up window resizable though! I'll go sort that out as soon as I can.
As Jayne from DevJam said, a one-page text only version was provided for accessibility purposes, so hopefully if you don't like using Flash based pop-up webistes, or can't, all the info was provided there instead...
Thanks for your comments though... I'll definitely consider what I use in the way of popups in the future!

alessandro 06-06-2005, 15:55 Saturday was great, big big thanks to Hallam Volunteering and Carcrash and everyone else involved (apart from the backstage crew who stole my beer! lol)
I had a great time an hope everyone enjoyed our set.

cellarhigh 07-06-2005, 14:02 hey everyone just wondered if anyone went down.
thought it was a brilliant day and that the organisors (hallam volunteering) deserve a lot praise for the work they put in.
Dj tent was brilliant but having a huge band tent with still loads of people sitting on the grass outside drinking and listening with all the music going on just made my day.
I Went:clap:
I was sat on a pink blanket outside the dance tent and when the rain came down we went for a dance :headbang:
Great atmosphere!
Well done to the organisers:thumbsup:
cellarhigh 07-06-2005, 15:02 did it rain??!
i must have been drunk...
nobody_knows 07-06-2005, 15:06 I went down - absolutely LOVED IT!
For the second year running those 'scummy students', (as people like to call them) have kick-started my summer of festival attendance in quality style. The whole day was fantastic, despite the sun not putting in much of an appearance. I totally LOVE Daybreak and the last DJ was wicked!
Highly recommend it to anyone and everyone for next year!
Brilliant day!!!!
Good to see the best band in Sheffield .." Bhuna " !!!
Well done all involved in the organising of the venue.
mr.blaze 07-06-2005, 16:21 I went from about 1pm onwards had a great time so did the kids. It was well organised and handing out Ponchos at the end was a nice touch.
The music was ok but it's a shame Bison didn't play. Champion Kickboxer and another band I can't remember the name of who liked their Hats were very good.
mattfjohnson 07-06-2005, 16:51 I went along at about 4pm. I was flying solo but it didn't matter cos the atmosphere was great. Great music, great people, Great day...
WallBuilder 07-06-2005, 20:39 I went along and was there for over five hours as I've said on the other thread. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there and have found a new band to be interested in namely Silverwheel.
Have to admit to a worried habit that I've started to develop which is looking at people and wondering if they are forum members.
Thought the music was of a high quality and the clean porta-loo's were a definite plus though as I left at five I can't confirm that they were still nice by nine.
carcrash 08-06-2005, 00:00 I was the tall bloke in the darwin theory t shirt moving stuff around on stage. Great day out. I didn't get to see much of the dance tent but I got to meet iffypop
SHANE-D-PAIN 09-06-2005, 11:46 I walked through it, although i didnt stay (had to get to the Odeon) it looked like a good laugh, i would have stuk around but like i said, i needed to go.
pity about the rain but great day
dance tent was wicked but needed more DnB
stephanie 10-06-2005, 11:02 Really enjoyed playing the Dev Jam this year. Everything was really well organized, and the sound was good too, despite not having a proper soundcheck. Some fantastic bands all in one place - shows what a brilliant music culture Sheffield has!
Bring on the Notty Fest and the Earl Jam!!!!
Incidentally, what happened to the much-hyped "Mongolian food and traditional Mongolian Ger"?? - by the time I went looking, they'd all packed up and vanished!
