I need to commute to York on and off for the next few weeks for a work placement, is there anyone with any advice?
I have a car but could also travel by train/bus.
I used to commute to Wakefield every day so I know that the M1 is hell in a morning all the way from Barnsley to Leeds, anyone know what the A1 is like at about 8.30am?
thanks in advance

It's the A64 traffic that's the problem.

Mr Strix gets the train

Hi

Sorry I can't help you but would you mind me asking what it's like and how long it takes commuting to Wakefield ever day?

I may be doing this regularly in a month or 2 and don't think it'd be the best thing to happen!!

Cheers

I went straight up the M1 to Wakefield, its ok in the school holidays, but in term time you travel at about 5mph from Jn38 onwards....
So on a good day from Jn35 to Jn40 it took me 25 mins.. on a bad day, double it!!! :(

Thanks, I wondered what that bit would be like too. I was figuring the train would be the best option. Any idea what route it takes? what are the stations between here and York? (just being nosy really)

Pick your trains carefully. I think Mr S gets the virgin from sheff to york via Donny.

It's possible to wind up on a really slow trudge though if you catch the wrong train and make poor connections ;)

My girlfriend gets a train to York and back every day, the Virgin one via Donny. She's not had any problems yet (been commuting for a few weeks now). My guess is that the roads would be an absolute nightmare in comparison.

Oh dear! And how long does the full journey take you?

Well I worked 5 mins off Jn40 and live 5 mins from Jn35 so you got my full journey times. To the centre of Wakefield add another 10 mins at least, 15 or 20 for term time (there's a large 'posh' school right in the centre of Wakefield)!

The Virgin train to York takes less than an hour. I would say it's your best option especially at rush hour. Goes via doncaster if I remember right.

The train, it's as simple as that!

Whilst you're there, don't rush back. Get yo' rear end sat in some of York's superb pubs, or overlooking the river at the Piano and Pitcher or Bar 38. Then, after a sesh, get the train. The journey will fly....,

PS - Take loads of cash.

The best route I have found (approx 1hour) is M1, M18, A1 (M) A19

Actually, given the number of people that do commute there, that may not be such a bad idea if they club together!

depends what time you are travelling,

The virgin train that used to leave sheffield via doncaster at 7.21 has been removed. It now starts from doncaster at 7.45 instead and gets into york at 8.08. There is a local train from sheffield (d. 6.55) to Doncaster (a. 7.22) to make the connection.

The first direct train from sheff to york leaves at 7.12 and goes via wakefield westgate and leeds before arriving at york at 8.19 but this is regularly late - sometimes by up to 25mins.

During the day the virgin service is more reliable.
Via doncaster - train leaves at 5 mins to the hour and takes about 55 mins,
Via Leeds - train leaves at 21 mins past the hour

Must get out more!

Depending on the volume of traffic, I find the quickest route is straight up the M1, briefly A1(M) and onto the A64. Thence to A1237 for the North or onto Tadcaster Road for the South.

A more pleasant journey is along the lines as quoted by bonny, but continue along the M18, M62 (east) to junction 37 (Howden) and take the A63 which joins the A19 just north of Selby. This is ideal if you want to head for the South Bank region of York.

I still reckon the train is best and certainly the least stressful. And as I said, there's nothing to stop you having a pint or two before you return home.

Well I'm heading right to the centre of York, just near the station, so I too think thats my best bet so far. Sadly my allergy to beer is enough to stop me having a pint or two before I go home (oh and also that I'm legless after a half when I do drink it!!!)

Yeahh, I know the area I'm heading to and know there's no parking... I was advised to use the park and ride... but i'd still have to drive the majority of the way there first anyway, i still figure the train will be best :D
