At one time there must have been loads of knacker's yards for slaughtering old horses. These days you never seem to hear of them. Were there ever any in Sheffield? I heard somewhere taht there used to be one on Pond St, where the bus station now is.
Maybe someone could make a good joke about buses or bus drivers that are ready for the knackers yard.
The only connection I can think of is this .
A couple of years ago I was going to live abroad and so was fully loaded up. I'd ordered a private taxi the night before as I had to be at Pond St. at some unGodly hour to catch a bus to Heathrow. The taxi went onto what used to be Harmer Lane [perhaps still is ?] , anyway quite near the Student's Union bar , and then said he wasn't allowed to take me any further as only authorised taxis were allowed to go to the actual bus stop I needed. Great ! It wasn't his fault . He was a nice bloke and even showed me the letter , banning him.
Now , I'm getting on a bit but I wonder how a really old person would have struggled with three or four bags and cases ? "Luckily " , there were some trolleys nearby and luckily I had some pound coins , but if not ......?
This is the state we've got ourselves into , in this Happy Land of ours----where a taxi driver is scared to go to a deserted bus stop at 4.30 .am. , in case he's prosecuted for trespass or something !
The connection ? By the time I'd sorted it all out I was well and truly knackered.
There was one, bottom of the Wybourn next to the abattoir, near the Cricket inn pub but i think it closed in the 50s-60s
