I'm off to the States next month for a holiday.
Can travellers cheques be used as money in shops over there?
Any hints on places to go to get the best rate of exchange?
I think you'll find credit cards are used frequently over there. Make sure that your card issuer is aware that you're going there and doesn't stop the unusual transactions - anything out of the ordinary thrown up by the card being used out of the normal country.

They can be used in shops and restaurants. They give you change in cash so its a handy way of cashing them. Most hotels will cash them too.
Most places need you to show ID, but a driving license suffices, it you prefer not to carry a passport.
Some places require ID when using credit card too (notably Vegas) but most don't even check the signature
I found the American Express exchange on (I think) Charles Street has better rates than the travel agents did, not sure how they compare to banks etc.
For everyday purchases, you will find that travellers cheques are not commonly accepted except in tourist areas.
If you have a debit card without a visa/mc logo the PIN will protect your account and you will be able to take money out at any ATM.
I used to travel around the country on business and this worked very well for me. I got a duplicate card from my bank, just in case I lost the first one.
