Hi all...just need to know what exactly is this bird, that has decided to roost up the tree outside our house. Not actually seen but heard and it's reet annoying.
Happens at night, so the bird is nocturnal, it sounds pretty big and goes "Taweeeet, Taweeet" Really loud and hoarse.
It does'nt go Twoo after so, I'm not sure if an owl, but it sounds very butch if it is? What kind of owl would make this noise?

I thought it was fox's until O/h pointed out that it was coming from up tree..lol This noise goes on most of night/early hours and has scared my little one to death.

What bothers me, we are due to put up Aviary next week, looks like whatever it is....has been given priority information and is now sitting up the tree in wait of a tasty snack..lol
The aviary chosen is actually designed as dog kennel/ run, basically a large shed with a run attached, both have solid apex roof.
The mesh in the run is for dogs, so nice and thick, we are to put finer netting on inside.

Is there anything else I could do to make it Owl/ hawk proof? Should I perch a decoy plastic bird ontop, if so which one?

Sensible answers only please:hihi:

Unfortunately, I'm struggling to think of something sensible to say. As usual :hihi: so I'll just say good luck with yer aviary, it sounds pretty safe. Wot kinda birds are you having?

:hihi:Thankyou both!!!! Yes was hoping Owl, sounded very foxy though cos sort of screeches, verging on a scream and very loud like I said, we do have resident bat's up here but first time I've heard an Owl.

Just had visions of this big bird of prey, sat up there content in watching our little birds when we get them, with it's big flourecent beady eye's.

We will be keeping small finches, canaries, poss couple of budgies and defo 4 hens as already put the rescue bid in...lol:hihi:
Prefered the sound of rescued hens as opposed to quail to keep the floor clean of bugs and fallen seed, you get to have nice fresh eggs too...bonus!

Sounds great! If this stupid parrot doesn't stop throwing his food at me while I'm trying to type, I may well have to build an aviary for him in our garden! lol

LOL.....and all this, because my other half got me a little canary for my birthday:hihi: He's very funny re "birds in house" it's a very old superstition thing, daft I' say but he believes it....as not a scratch on lottery since my little bird came in...lol

So he ends up spending lot's on a flaming aviary not to mention the concrete base....but guess who got the digging to do before that concrete came?

I said Brill idea cos I can sit outside and watch the bird's for hours, chill, he has a stressful job removing Azzy all day and I get stress with the small rug rat, who incidently has a big sister, who in turn causes more stress when she comes home from school....I was just....I was only playing...arrrrrgh!

So it's either I turn into a raving alcoholic or I get my brain in gear and rescue these poor birds who have no-where else to go:hihi:

Have been advised NOT to take in BIG bird's due to big claws/ beaks v's canaries, finches.

Oooooh there was one on E-bay a week back, local pick up Sheffield, Hexagonal play house type jobby! Only wanted £150, was a good eight foot round with solid roof. Ideal for polly! Just shove him out to play during day!:hihi:

Owls do screech and really loudly, one really freaked me out last year when I was walking the dogs at stupid oclock as I am regularly known to do
Durham told me there was something in the sky and I looked up...there was this huge, silent, pale coloured bird, it did give me a bit of a shock when it screeched for added effect it was mega loud, I couldn't wait to get home :hihi: and all the time I could hear it screeching as it flew round the estate.

I've actually thought about giving him part of the shed, with an outdoor area too but I think he'd be too lonely. We took his cage out into the garden in the summer and he looked proper scared. Mind you, all 4 cats and the dog surrounded his cage and just sat staring at him from all sides :hihi:

Tis the female Tawny Owl that says too-whit. If you don't hear an answering too-whoo, it's one lonely owl :|

I had an owl twoooo, twoooo, twoooo, twoooo, an so on outside my house last wednesday an thursday night(Manor Top), he was very loud too, first nite i heard it i was watching Lost in Austen on TV so i thought it was the telly, but when the credits started rolling after the program had finished and i could still hear it, i looked out of the window to see him sat on the aerial on the house across my street, like you said very loud bird, even when he had flown off, obviously not too far cos i could still hear him but not see him.
Yes as it as been said earlier, i was always led to believe that if you hear a twooo, it a owl on its own, if you he twit then twoooo it is two owls calling to each other.
Must admit been a city person through and through, i love the sound of owls, only heard 3 in my whole 37 years and i also love to see foxes, badgers etc.. on the rare occasions it happens. Must be a bit of a secret wildlife fan. lol

Saturday night I returned to my brother and sister-in-law's at Charnock and as soon as I got out the car, I could hear a large bird of prey calling nearby.

Through moving slowly across the road, I spotted the biggest tawny owl I've ever seen perched ontop of the telegraph pole, screeching it's head off (t'wit) without getting any response.

It let me get within 10 feet of the base of the telegraph pole before it took off and flew over my head towards the woods.

It was an amazing priviledge to see a wonderful bird in the suburbs so close up.

That would be a barn owl. Their screeching and haunting calls earned them the reputation as ghosts due to the unearthly sounds they make.

They're beautiful in flight, aren't they? So quiet and graceful!

When I used to ride motorbikes, I used to wear a crash helmet which had highly reflective decals on it. As I was riding up a dark country lane back to my digs at agriculatural college in Hampshire, a barn owl swooped out of the field to my right with wings braking and talons extended! If I hadn't have ducked I'd've had a barn owl as a helmet ornament!

Well I wondered if it might be a barn owl because it looked so pale coloured but I thought that it was unlikely in such a built up area, although I may be wrong and sometimes I guess that they escape from captivity.

It really was quite beautiful in flight and absolutely silent (till it screeched almost giving me heart failure that is :hihi: ).

It's funny that you mention the owl swooping down at you while riding your bike, my ex had one swoop down at his car like that in the early hours, gave him quite a fright!

I'm sorry to say "THE OWL" has vacated the area! Heard a Twoo coming from brook, and our little female has not been heard since!

Well, at least she has found her mate and is no longer a threat to our rescue aviary! Thanks so much for your replies, miss Charnock end, as brought up there...and it does'nt surprise me that you've been lucky enough to see one that end....awwww.

I actually saw a Barn Owl a few years ago Limb Lane at dore..we were rested up for a few min's and saw this beautiful bird just sat there watching us!
Never forget that!:hihi:

If where you live is near to farmland, parks with lots of grass and meadows, or overgrown wasteland, then you'll see (and hear) owls. Sheffield's reknowned for having green corridors extending throughout the city, and a prolific number of backgardens providing habitats and hunting grounds for various wildlife.

On Lowedges, being close to farmland, I'd lay in bed at night and hear both tawny and barn owls calling and hunting. It was fantastic!

Just read this...I WISH!!!!!! That flaming tree is mega 30 foot plus and we can't use half the drive because of it, I would rather have the owl than the tree to be honest...but Street Force won't do anything about it.
They WILL however take tree's down on this estate that do not pose any problem whatsoever.
Oh well, we live in hope!:hihi: Ha ha...just realised it's YOU mummy, Ha Ha!!!! You do know I have already had many, many words with street force about this tree..lol Tripped over the lovely roots that had pushed the pavement up last year and THEY deny the paths round here have a problem with tree root's Sure as hell came round quick to repair it though!

Everyone! The avairy came today! Wooooh yipee!!!! It looks really good, all that digging and knackering my back paid off!
Spent all day fixing smaller mesh on the inside, only problem dog adopted it for a while but guess she'll change her mind when we get birds in:hihi:.
