View Full Version : Should hoodies be banned from shopping areas ?
Greybeard 12-05-2005, 08:08 A major shopping centre has banned hoodies
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1608437,00.html
Groups of youths wandering around with their hoods up inevtably arouse my suspicion about their intentions. I appreciate it is a fashion statement but it's also useful in avoiding identification on CCTV cameras if they are involved in anti-social/criminal activities.
It's pointless banning articles of clothing, the kids will just wear something different.
Once hoodies become unfashionable they will all stop wearing them anyway.
But it's good for publicity I guess.
A lot of the hoodies look much more attractive with the hoods up .
When they're down and the full head and face is revealed for all to see , a lot of them look like concentration camp victims.
------Shaved heads , gaunt , half-starved faces , blank eyes------for all the world like they've just spent 5 years in Buchenwald.
So , I say let's risk the occasional bag-snatch and let them keep the hoods up----if only for aesthetic reasons.
aslong as i can still wear my blink-182 hoodie I dont care, it should just be cheap chavish hoodies that need banning. I think when you see them with scalfs up over their nose, cap on and hoods up-all on while indoors I think its 1-stupid fashion statement 2-makes you stick out like a saw thumb that your going to steal something. :loopy:
infact i dont see why they all insist on wearing their hoods up where ever they go no matter how hot it is. I only use mine when its raining or very very cold.
Cutglass 12-05-2005, 08:34 They've already been banned in Liverpool for pretty much the same reasons.
Most stores have signs asking bikers to remove their helmets. If your face can't be seen on cctv, then it'd be impossible to pick you out if you commit a crime.
Not to say that bikers are anywhere near as remotely offensive as hoodie wearers, no way :)
spiffymonkey 12-05-2005, 08:43 I'm all for banning clothing of any type from shopping centres. I never go to them, so it wouldn't affect me, but it would be funny :)

that's a really unnecessary ananlogy.
evildrneil 12-05-2005, 09:05 Nice to know I'm a thug because I happen to own some nice warm hoodies! As I have three of these garments does that make me especially thugish???

Only if you wear them all at the same time ;)
Bored old biddies making pointless protests because they have nothing else to do. Get a life!!:loopy:
I might start a petition to stop people with prams or groups of people reading maps whilst walking around Meadowhall. They are a threat to my time.
evildrneil 12-05-2005, 09:17 I think they should ban prams from shopping centres (they seem to be primarily used as battering rams!) and also people who stop and talk in doorways / the narrowest parts of the throughfares should be summarily ejected!
Well , Leigh , the last time I was in Sheffield and waiting for a bus near the Nat-West bank on High Street , I had plenty of opportunity to see a cross section of young , middle-aged and old Sheffielders going up and down High Street. Sorry to say it , but a lot of the hoodies [and others] DID look like those pictures of ex-concentration camp victims----well at least from the neck up. They did have gaunt faces and shaved heads and blank eyes. Can you think of a similar group more like that ? And even if you can , why not say , "concentration camp" victim , if that IS what they looked like !
Admittedly at the other end of the spectrum , to balance things up , as it were , there were also the , "balloons on legs ". They were wobbling past , usually stuffing their faces with a beefburger or something----now they definitely didn't look like the hoodies at all. !

Yes I'm confused now.
I have 2 or three of these, one is a rock band one. As a registered chav exterminator, does this mean I have to shoot myself?

Perhaps. Should we have a poll?
:hihi:

They should also ban people who can't be bothered to look where they're going and walk into the path of a pushchair then!
I think Meadowhall should follow in this lead. Its a shame to tar everyone with the same brush, but its certainly true that thugs wear these hoodies to disguise their (usually ugly) faces and would think twice about offending if the world could see their mug!

I am with you on that one Tinkabel. It really used to annoy me when ignorant people thought it was easier for me to steer a pushchair round them than for them to deviate slightly from their chosen path.

Suggestion for new poll:
Subject of the next "Is xxxxx a chav phenomenon?" poll - What is xxxxx?
a) hoodies
b) shoes
c) trousers
d) bicycles
e) Sheffield Forum membership

No no no! What I meant the poll to be was:
muddycoffee thinks he may be a chav. Should he shoot himself?

Why not solve both pushchair/slow bumblers problem and the chaos caused by people avoinding them/not avoiding them by makign it mandatory to install a 'speed lane' in all shopping centres
That way all those people who actually know what they want to buy can go to the shops they want quickly without having people stop aimlessly in front of them to stare into a shop window. Its so annoying to be held up when you are in a hurry just because some doesn't have the consideration to get out of the flow of people traffic.
Wilf
I think they should put cow catchers on the front of supermarket trolleys. Cos I am sick of barging my way down the isles at the supermarket

I know, I was just throwing my own idea into the mix. Just a bit of social commentary on the random labelling of things as being 'chav' on here of late :)

I always avoid pushchairs if I see them,- it's usually painful not to :D .
It's the ones that sneak up behind and ram me in the legs I find objectionable, and it's usually because the owners are gazing into shop windows or arguing with the other children with them.
Perhaps all pedestrian areas should be marked out with pushchair lanes ;)
After reading about all these homicidal psychopaths hurtling around , mowing people down with prams and trolleys , maybe the Chavs are the least of it ? It could be that they go round in gangs to protect themselves from the Pushchair Mafiosi.
Internetowl 12-05-2005, 14:07 Blair's latest attempt at public acceptance - the hoodies days are numbered - will that include his beer swilling, hoodie wearing, student kids?
I personally think that they shouldn't be banned - I'm sure the major sports good manufacturers and retailers will be swamped with people trying to get their money back if he succeeds with his ban..
carcrash 12-05-2005, 14:25 Nobody is taking my hoodie off me

This isn't Blair's idea at all - if you actually watched the news conference he said he supported the shopping centre in their action to ban hoodie wearers from entering the place. He did not say it was his policy.
Regarding his beer swilling, hoodie wearing, student kids, are you referring to the ONE time when Euan was drunk? Blair also said today that he didn't think his sons had hoodies anyway.

Meadowhall will already ask people to put their hoods down, or leave the centre if they suspect them of being suspicious. Its just not a condition of entry
I think Blair should be ashamed that his own son is a chav...

If that's effective enough then fine, but if it isn't, step it up a notch.
DanSumption 12-05-2005, 18:36 I was shocked when I heard of this, but it turns out it's just another case of crap reporting by the media.
I don't have the exact words of the Bluewater leaflet here but basically what it says is they've banned people from wearing things to obscure their face, "for example hooded tops and baseball caps". From every media report I've heard so far it sounds very much like this is a "war on chavs" and that everyone wearing a hooded top is a potential suspect. Actually, it's just an extension of the "no motorbike helmets in banks" thing - I'm sure they have no problem with you going in the shopping centre with your hood down, it's just when you put it up in a way that hides your face that it becomes a problem.

I have been known on occasion to wear a zip up sports top (hoodies) and frequently wear baseball caps in summer. Does this mean I am a chav too??!
It's just another redundant measure to make the general public think something is being done. Why not implement measures to reduce delinquent or threatening behaviour rather than aiming them at clothing!! :loopy:

Now that would make a shopping expedition more interesting:heyhey:
Main trouble I have in Meadowhall is falling over people from - shall we be kind and say from outside Yorkshire - who stop abrubtly in front of me to look at their map.
I know they're having difficulty coming to terms with the 21st Century - or for those beyond Worksop the 1950's - but surely they've seen shops selling trainers before...........
Everybody would have heard of the decision of Bluewater Shopping centre to ban hoodies & base ball caps what do my fellow members of the Forum think on the same ban being introduced into Meadowhall.Only yesterday a group of cap wearing youths were being escorted off the premises for causing trouble and you could see by the shoppers body lanuage that they felt intimidated by these youths.
what happens if you just happen to have a hood on your top and they ban them coz most of my tops hav hoods on?
Same thread HERE (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?threadid=40060&highlight=hoodies)
zombiekillah 19-05-2005, 16:02 thing is the same trouble makers will still be there but harder to recognise ! and plenty of decent people wear hoodies and baseball caps i really dont see how it would help to ban them.
MOD: Threads merged - thanks for the link Viking :)
redrobbo 19-05-2005, 21:02 It's up to the individual shopping centre. Doesn't sound a great idea to me though. The 'hoodies' will still go in the shopping centres, but with their hoods down.

I think that is the whole idea redrobbo.
Yobs and other lowlife will be easier to ID if their faces are visible on the CCTV which is usually high up and looks down on the shoppers. These pondlife will still be around, but will be easier to pick up after the event.
As for the 'not so young', and the decent kids who like to wear baseball caps and/or hoods, then maybe they could honour the rules when entering the place for the good of all - hat off, hood down.
After all, honest bikers have been taking their helmets off for the good cause for years now.
burnttoast 20-05-2005, 19:04 Dont know why someone should want to wear their hood up in a shopping mall anyway:loopy: Just goes to prove that todays youth are just nesh wimps.:P Lets face it its like an oven in meadowhell:rolleyes: I think everyone should be made to go topless anyway:heyhey:
Ban hoodies, ban shopping malls, ban shopping, ban drinking, ban smoking, ban t'other, ban banning.

If I were you I'd nip in there tomorrow burnttoast, have a look around, and I suspect you'd put a few 'exceptions' into that idea.
Believe me, it makes sense:gag:
I really dont like this idea, I have 4 or 5 hoodies I find them more comfortable to wear in this weather than a coat, my boyfriend wears them as well, we keep ourselves to ourselves and dont cause trouble.
Just a thought, if the shopping center is banning people wearing the hoodies and baseball caps, are they banning the shops within the center from selling them?
Susie

A.B.Yaffle 21-05-2005, 10:50 I wonder what people would say if balaclavas came into fashion, would people complain about them being banned from banks?
I don't see any reason why people should object to taking their hoods off while in shopping centres, unless they have something to hide.
Don_Kiddick 22-05-2005, 11:17 maybe some of us 'oldies' should start wearing them & cheap bling & slouching round doing 'the hand movements' and attempting to speak in a mock cockney/black/asian/ali g accent :hihi:
It'll put the yobs off immediately
