View Full Version : Sheffield Superlatives

Has anyone ever collected a "full" list of all the superlatives that the Sheffield Publicity people have put together to sell the city to tourists, investors and the world in general? If not, maybe this would be a good place to compile the definitive version? Here's a few to start you off:

Arts Tower - the tallest educational building in Europe
Sheffield - the fourth largest city in England
Sheffield - the fifth largest city in the UK
More parks per head of population than any other UK city
More trees per head of population than any other UK city
More National Park (i.e. the Peak District) within its boundary than any other city

And the other question - how many of them are true?!

4. More Yemeni boxing stars per head of population than any other british city

5. More cutlery per head than any other british city

Having lists like that on here is preaching to the converted!

What I want to know is WHY the council and tourist info. agencies and other relevant departments and organisations aren't doing more to advertise Sheffield nationally and internationally.

The city where football began.
The oldest football club in the world and the oldest ground in the world.
Why we have never exploited these facts I do not know.

I get the impression that there are an awful lot of people from outside Sheffield looking in on this site. Maybe we should be shouting as well as the agencies?

The one we were always bludgeoned over the head with at school (late seventies) was:

- The cleanest industrial city in Europe

This may well have been true at one time, around the time that clean air policies were a brand new innovation and everyone stopped burning coal fires, but these things become repeated ad nauseum for years even once all truth has drained away.

I thought Hallam was the second most affluent constituency after an area in Cheshire?

richardallan

Correct - Hallam comes second to Tatton (formerly represented by Martin Bell MP) in the affluence stakes.

This is in a table of all UK constituencies that has been adjusted for cost of living so that places like Tatton (where most Man Utd mega millionaires live) and Hallam (where our football players are not paid quite so much) can beat ones in London and the South East.

Probably because of all the failed attempts to get the Olympics, they were offered it out of sympathy.

But, good point. Why was Sheffield not offered the chance to host the olympics? London doesn't have a cat in hell's chance, especially when it has yet to build the facillities.

I think we mentioned in an older thread about bidding as the North of England. Manchester and Sheffield have outstanding sports facillities, not to mention better transport links, scenery and, above all, people!

If I remember correctly, Sheffield did bid for the games, but pulled out right at the last minute (concerns over finances I think - they literally pulled out on the day the decision was being made) and thus was not available to be chosen in any case.

If I've got any of these points wrong, I stand to be corrected.

It strikes me that to have seven hills carved by rivers, you need 6 rivers.

With 6 rivers you get 7 hills.
With 5 rivers you get 6 hills.
With 4 rivers you get 5 hills.
With 3 rivers you get 4 hills.
With 2 rivers you get 3 hills.
With 1 river you get 2 hills.

makes sense to me.

Karlt
30-10-2003, 12:48
Not if they form a circle. Then you can alternate river/hill and end up with equal numbers of each.

Tony
30-10-2003, 13:13
Err.. I dont think that you need ANY rivers do you? Anyway, the River Don goes right through 2 valleys, so wouldnt that help your theory?

Don
Sheaf
Porter

Which are the other 2?

max

Which comes first, the river or the hill? Any geologists out there?

Karlt
30-10-2003, 13:55
The hill. Usually.

But the pattern of rivers in Sheffield is more compllicated than "X rivers" - it always is.

Rother doesn't count. It's a different basin altogether, only joining the Don up at Rotherham. The "seven hills" are the hills between, effectively, the tributaries of the Don. Sheffield itself is based on the confluence of these rivers with the Don.

So. R=River, H=Hill. There's the Sheaf(R1), then the hill with Ringinglow on it(H1). Then the Porter Brook(R2), then Fulwood and Walkley (H2). Then there's the Rivelin (R3), then Stannington (H3). Then the Loxley (R4) and Hillsborough (H4). Next comes the Don (R5) and Parson Cross/Firth Park/Wincobank(H5). Then it's the Don again, then another hill - the one with Manor Top at the top (H6). We have a small river from there - the Meersbrook (R6), then the last hill - with Norton, round Greenhill and to Abbeydale (H7), and we're back at the Sheaf.

Only makes six rivers, unless you cheat and consider the Don before and after the city centre to be different rivers. Or unless you include the Rother, which is not actually really part of the Hill/River circle.

According to one of Sheffield's councillors, Sheffield has the most farm's within it's boundaries than any other UK city.

While I was trying to check this out I found this very interesting site about Sheffield, which contains more suplatives about Sheffield, especially in regard to green spaces.

According to the council's list of Sheffield related facts: Sheffield Football Club is the oldest football club in the world - traditional rivals Hallam FC has the oldest football ground.

Probably another Sheffield team according to this :
http://www.about-soccer.com/soccer-history.shtml
"The first football clubs were established in Sheffield in 1857, and soon they had enough to establish their own Football Association in 1867. Sheffield FA played London FA in 1861, one of the first regional matches."

To answer the origianal question of who did they play - they played amongst themselves and other local mens organisations. It says so here:

Actually the rivers wouldn't have made the hills, this far north in England. They're glacial features and would have been slowly eroded over 10,000 years by lots of very heavy ice. The rivers would have arrived afterwards and "polished" the hills into the shape we have now, whilst most of the river bed would have been formed with "meltwater" when the glaciers melted...

Just found this thread linked from somewhere else, I must say all very impressive. I think there should be some proper promotion of Sheffield done as outside of the city it doesn't have a great reputation. Well behind most other major cities. Now I have lived here for a bit my opinion has completely changed. It is a great place.
