Would be mostly acoustic stuff tho. samesame monkey 26-09-2008, 13:52 The Vine have started one on a thurs, popped in last night and it seemed to be going well. Also Red House on wednesday nights. practiceshef 26-09-2008, 13:54 red house is awful though. samesame monkey 26-09-2008, 13:55 really? I've not been for ages as i'm busy on a wednesday Classic Rock 26-09-2008, 16:13 There's a new open mic night starting in a couple of weeks time at the Moorfoot Tavern!! It will be on Thursday nights kicking off from the 2nd Thurs in October. I'm just gathering together equipment and instruments to run it. Any offers of help would be appreciated!!!! mikebarton 26-09-2008, 16:27 the pub thats opposite St. Pauls and the so called "cheese grater", opposite where the york used to be has them. the lescah have them still? start your own in the cricketers arms? Jay Lei 26-09-2008, 17:10 Cricketers should be fun. Brick through window and pull latch up? Shut down in't it? I don't mind givin you an hand Buffy with moorfoot one. Classic Rock 26-09-2008, 18:27 I don't mind givin you an hand Buffy with moorfoot one. That would be great! Getting the word around the musicians will be a good start, I'm going to put word out on MySpace in the next few days. See if you can spread the word too! I'm trying to track down a cheap semi acoustic guitar (free, donation!?) to use on the night as an in house guitar - if anyone knows of one....? mikebarton 26-09-2008, 18:46 theres a guy giving away a free amp in hunters bar that apparently needs some small repair that im trying to get hold of if thats any good? Jay Lei 26-09-2008, 18:49 Can put word out for you no problem, got an official launch date yet as that's first thing I'll be asked? MTheo 26-09-2008, 19:34 red house is awful though. When did you go last? I'd never been until my band played there about a year ago (apparantly they had just had a re-furb)....it wasent' best for a heavy rocking beast :hihi: but as a pub it was smart, friendly and really nice atmosphere that would suit acoustic VERY well i'd of thought. practiceshef 26-09-2008, 19:42 i played there about 6 months ago? it had been refurbished then. the problem was that its not a very good atmosphere for live music, they brought out mulled wine!! also, our bass player had done a sound engineering degree and their techy was asking him how to do it! practiceshef 26-09-2008, 19:43 maybe we were just crap? Classic Rock 26-09-2008, 20:32 The Moorfoot open mic will start on 9th October. I've managed to pick up a small 40w practice amp today which will do for the time being. I've got the PA which bands vocals go through down at the moorfoot anyway. Just need a semi acoustic guitar.... can anyone think of anything else which is needed? Other than musicians of course? practiceshef 26-09-2008, 20:33 have you got a drumkit? or are you not having one? practiceshef 26-09-2008, 20:49 do you need a drumkit? or are you not having one? Classic Rock 26-09-2008, 21:14 I don't have a drum kit, could do with one!! practiceshef 26-09-2008, 21:57 we have got one, we can lend it you for free. as long as we can put our web adress on the front of the bass drum? its for practice rooms for bands, so it would fit in quite well Classic Rock 26-09-2008, 22:21 That's really generous of you. We'd really only need a bass drum, snare and a hi hat. Sticks too! I'm not a drummer so don't really know what I'm talking about, so I'll go with whatever you suggest! How would you want to work this? There is room to store it at the Moorfoot securely or would you be willing to bring it and then take it away again? Could you spread the word around your practice rooms? The musos there may like to come down and play to a small crowd! practiceshef 26-09-2008, 22:29 it would be best for us if we just left the kit with you if thats ok? we would bring you everything you need- with toms as well to be on safe side. if you use our kit with adress on bass drum, we will be happy to lend it you and spread the word throughout our practice rooms. we will put it on a notice board, and also put a post on our myspace.. obviously, look after the kit :) Classic Rock 26-09-2008, 23:04 That is fantastic! Of course we'll look after it and dust it and give it a bowl of milk each night. Will you be at each open mic session? If not, I'm really gonna need lessons in how to set the kit up! Sounds like this open mic night is going to turn into a really great regular event! I've just sent loads of event notices out to people on MySpace and there should be posters going up in the venue in the next few days. Hopefully the power of the Forum will bring in some more people. Next stop the Press!!! mikebarton 26-09-2008, 23:07 i can set a drum kit up, if practiceshef cant make it :) mikebarton 26-09-2008, 23:08 maybe give me a job as the drum kit seter upper?! :P :P Classic Rock 26-09-2008, 23:20 lol, you need a name badge with that job title on it! I think the more the merrier to help out. Thanks for the offer! All hands on deck will be very welcome to make this a success. mikebarton 26-09-2008, 23:27 let me know what i can do to help, always good to get experience in these events aswell for later in life opportunities. ill spread the word aswell about the event :) Classic Rock 27-09-2008, 11:35 Getting people down to take part as well as listen is a must! Ask around to see if anyone has a semi acoustic guitar which could be used as an in house guitar. Does anyone have one they don't want which a load of musos could cherish? Jay Lei 27-09-2008, 11:46 kit, pa, mics, guitar should suffice (any more, it's up to individual musicians to sort for themselves). Cricketers did used to do open mic, died though, as, I believe, the cricketers has also The Moorfoot open mic will start on 9th October. I've managed to pick up a small 40w practice amp today which will do for the time being. I've got the PA which bands vocals go through down at the moorfoot anyway. Just need a semi acoustic guitar.... can anyone think of anything else which is needed? Other than musicians of course? practiceshef 27-09-2008, 17:25 we will come down some nights, first time ill give you a run through on how to set it up, its easy really! anyway, ill definately spread the word round our groups, some of them seem like fledgling bands aswell so it will suit them. just drop me a reply when you want the kit:) Classic Rock 28-09-2008, 14:16 If you can bring it on the night, round about 7pm on the 9th October, that will be great. Alternatively drop it off earlier and ask behind the bar if you can store it with Buffy's PA gear and we can set it up on the night. Classic Rock 05-10-2008, 13:00 Right, it's this coming Thursday at the Moorfoot and I'm still trying to get my hands on a semi acoustic guitar to use as an in house guitar. Any suggestions? Can you guys spread the word a bit to get some musos down to play? practiceshef 05-10-2008, 17:46 ill spread word, but i havent got an electro acoustic to lend im afraid! Classic Rock 05-10-2008, 21:30 I've been telling people that you're lending us drums and have had a couple of musicians say they've been thinking of changing practice rooms so you may get some trade from this! Satyr 07-10-2008, 10:23 I would recommend a Chalk Board or White Board if it isn't too late. That way you can write down the order of people playing and everyone knows roughly when they can play Classic Rock 11-10-2008, 00:17 Thanks to everyone who came down for the first Moorfoot Tavern open mic night. I'm sure you'll agree it had a really good feeling to it and there was some great talent out there. After some discussion with the musicians who attended, we're all in agreement that Tuesday nights are going to be best for most people, due to a clash of loyalties with another pub. Therefore we are going to relaunch the Open Mic on Tues 21st October! Spread the word (I'll be plugging it on here lots) and it will flourish into a really good night! leviathan13 15-10-2008, 12:00 Words And Things.co.uk have been running a regular open mic night at the Roebuck Tavern, Charles Street. Hopefully, the next one is going to be towards the end of November, and it'll be a Monday night. More info can be found at www.wordsandthings.co.uk. However, we haven't got a drumkit (not enough room) and no "house" guitar, so you really do have to bring your own, or ask the other muso's very nicely. There are streams on the site of previous nights so you can get an idea of what goes on. TimmyR 17-10-2008, 10:21 any one know if the Green room does an open mic night and if so what night? Anywhere else do them in the city center? Played the Red House this wed. It was a really good atmosphere and unstressful to play. Nice place too. May go along to the moorfoot tavern on tues... plasterscene 17-10-2008, 15:24 There was an open mic night every Tuesday at the Black bull in Aston which used to be pretty good with plenty of poeple in, I think it's still going but haven't been in a long while. Worth checking out though. Classic Rock 18-10-2008, 00:10 we have got one, we can lend it you for free. as long as we can put our web adress on the front of the bass drum? its for practice rooms for bands, so it would fit in quite well Hi can you let me know how we can get the drum kit to the Moorfoot for Tuesday night? I've PMd you a couple of times :( youtunes 24-01-2011, 00:39 I’m looking to start an open mic talent night, ideally in the S35, or central Sheffield area. I firstly need a suitable venue and then interested people to fill it with. I want to open up the night to all ages, all styles and all talents. From musicians to singers, and comedians to poets. I am open to the idea of themed nights, as I like all styles but some people only like specific genres I have a fully mixed 24 channel pa system including monitoring. A fully miked acoustic drum kit plus a selection of electric and acoustic guitars, as well as an 88 note, full size digital piano. I’m also looking to develop a recording facility so that performers can obtain a recording of their performance. Any offers of a venue, and your ideas to create an interesting and fun night out would be appreciated. Bassman62 27-01-2011, 23:02 The problem with most open mic nites is that it has become a way for pub landlords to get free entertainment out of musicians/entertainers other than the person running it. mickricho68 28-01-2011, 08:45 not always the case, the bellhouse wmc is struggling to stay open so i take my gear set it up and organise it for free because i love playin and enjoy watchin others play . it also gives me the oppertunity to jam along with other musicians.im not havin a dig but sometimes its not about the money:) Bassman62 28-01-2011, 14:05 not always the case, the bellhouse wmc is struggling to stay open so i take my gear set it up and organise it for free because i love playin and enjoy watchin others play . it also gives me the oppertunity to jam along with other musicians.im not havin a dig but sometimes its not about the money:) Sorry I'm not having a personal dig at you. Regarding clubs struggling to stay open, many have brought about their own problems by using booking agents and paying stupidly high fees for acts that had they booked direct they could have saved the clubs many £thousands per year. When the local clubs concert secs started using agents the fees rocketed I know for a fact that some concert secs took backhanders from agents for 6 months work in their club. I stopped working the clubs due to the agents sending you here there and everywhere to bump up the fee. The only winner was the agent. I spent many weekends in the 70/80s driving up and down the motorways whilst acts were brought in from the ares we were travelling to all to bump up the fees. Best of luck with you sessions. youtunes 31-01-2011, 22:10 I’m interested in setting up an open mic night in the chapeltown area but getting a venue seems incredibly difficult. So with that I’ve started looking at what other people are doing and your bellhouse club gig stuck in my mind, mainly because I used to do sound for a few cub acts in the past and must confess to a strange nostalgia of the clubs. However I must state in relation to the comments of Bassman62, the worst reason for the downfall of many clubs was fiddling by the committee. In fact I remember a club in the north east that had been taken over by women members, because the committee had fiddled so much that it was under threat of closure. What’s most amazing about this is, at the time (the 80s) women in the north east weren’t allowed to buy a drink from the bar themselves, they had to ask a male member (no pun intended) even if a stranger to buy the drink for them. I honestly hope this is not the case with bellhouse club for your sake it would be criminal if your efforts to save a club are wasted on a dishonest committee. Having said all that I intend to come and have a look at your event and perhaps brave the stage. mickricho68 01-02-2011, 06:52 i understand what you are all saying about fiddling that goes on in clubs, they have been notorious for it for many many years, i cant singe handedly save the club and its not my intentions to be fool enough to think i can,all i am doing is making use of an unused room to do what i love to do and get pals and new friends to come along and make use of it too, all it costs me is a bit if messin about setting up and taking down the gear, apart from having to buy a few drinks for me and the mississ,i hope to see you there one night cos ill be doing it while ever the club keeps breathing..thanks,.mick...JUSTJAMMIN@THE BELLHOUSE WMC,NEXT THURSDAY 24th FEB dee1975913 23-02-2011, 23:53 spring vale at walkley every weds horse an jockey wadsley every thurs .x mickricho68 24-02-2011, 07:07 what about my open mic DEE ,every two weeks at the bellhouse club,, next one tonight ,try and get one night ... mick&debs Rachy_baby 08-03-2011, 09:41 Hi youtunes I see your post from january looking for a place to start an open mic night.
