View Full Version : Getting out of Sheffield onto the M1 Friday morning?
Im having to travel to my mums for a funeral on friday.
Dropping my partner off at work at about 8.30 at the train station ish, just wondered if its very busy heading out of sheffield at that time, parkway, M1 etc?
I was thinking it probably is, but wasnt sure how? and thought it might have passed a bit by about 8.30 as most people start work at around 8.30-9.
Thanks.
Nope.
It will be just as busy at that time. Perpare for lots of standing traffic on the parkway, trying to get to m1..
Enjoy.
It's the M1 itself you need to worry about.
Give yourself plenty of time
Don't panic, the traffic is always worse heading towards the city in the Morning than is going out, you'll be alright, just don't worry!
Most of the Friday traffic is a pain after about 2pm, then gradually gets worse.
Bloomdido 11-05-2005, 22:37 Traffic on the Parkway backing up from the M1 has disappeared this week. Have 'they' done something to the timing of the lights? Not even a bit of a queue. It used to stretch back to the Catcliffe turn-off some mornings.
I have also noticed bad queues on the A630 slip road though, trying to get off the M1 southbound.
Can be hit and miss. Allow plenty of time.
Doesn't get any better getting on at J31 either at that time.
Depends which way you're heading.
Going out of town shouldn't be too bad but as has been said, the motorway junctions themselves might be busy.
If you're heading north, why not try going through Hillsborough and Grenoside and joining at Chapeltown (J35).
If you're going south, go over Manor Top and down through Mosborough/Eckington to join at J30.
The M1 round Sheffield is the busiest motorway in the country (possibly apart from the M25) so if you can avoid the major junctions near the city (J's 31-34) you will be better.
using the parkway to get to beighton at off peak times takes me about eighteen minutes thats from up by the university, when i have to go at eight thirty in the morning it has been taking me over fifty minutes, its chaos sorry

Why not let your partner use public transport for a change ?
Supertram is something that Sheffield can be proud of. Drop them off at the nearest tramstop without taking the car into the City Centre.
Allow lots more time and enjoy being part of the mass movement of people going about their business. See how many other cars you can Give Way to. They will love you - you will feel all good and courteous. React differently to those clowns who chop in front of you - they need to get there 2 seconds quicker than you. Laugh at it.
Go for less stress.
Thanks for all your help guys, im not exactly a pro driver, well at least with directions, and im fairly new to sheff so going through hilsborough would just freak me out totally, and i would be lucky if i got to my mums at midnight!
Might just let other half get the bus so that i can set off earlier, cos he cant start work before 8.30. Thanks again then.
to go north, get on the A61, follow it until it reaches the M1 at junc 36. A61 is penistone road and can be picked up from the university roundabout.
If you're going south, you don't need to take the Parkway. From Ponds Forge roundabout, take the second exit after the Parkway - Duke Street. Follow this road for about 12 miles and it will bring you to Junction 30 of the M1.
The road changes name several times and bends around a bit but you never need to take a turning - just follow the road markings straight ahead and you'll be fine. The journey from Ponds Forge to the M1 will take you about half an hour, and you should only get held up in a queue at one set of traffic lights on the way.
EDIT: I see you're talking about going through Hillsborough, so I guess you're not going south... oh well :)
