View Full Version : Winter - a miserable time of year
What a miserable time of year, I hate the cold, flu, arthritis, shivering, sneezing, coughing, cold in bed, having to put lots of clothes on, slipping and falling on the ice, wet leaves, catching bronchitis, running big heating bills up, skidding on ice and wet leaves when driving, breathing the icy cold air, falling and breaking a limb, dark nights at 1500hrs. long lonely nights sat in alone, not everyone wants to be sat in a boozer all night. Give me the Summer everytime!!!
I wholeheartedly agree
and can I add low winter-sun blindness, so that driving is a nightmare
Yep give me the summer anytime.
Also scraping your windscreen when its frosty is a real pain.

Sorry mate, I'm completely the opposite - I love winter. Long walks in the snow (if it snows, that is - there seems to be less snow each year) - especially in the mountains. There's not much better than spending a day out climbing in winter, in Eskdale, Langdale, Snowdonia etc, then going to a warm pub for a couple of pints.
I loathe summer, it's too hot and sticky, makes me scratch my skin until I'm raw, and it generally makes me feel uncomfortable. This summer was one of the worst I've ever experienced.
Winter on the other hand is (in both senses of the word) cool. I just love it when we get snow, nothing like a patch of pale white crisp snow crunching beneath the feet. It also makes you feel really snug in your home when you look outside and see how cold and wet it is.
Also, it's better to be too cold than too hot, because you can always put extra layers on, yet there's only so many layers you can take off.
Having said this, I may well change my tune if and when I get to Hal's age.
Don't agree Hal, I love all the seasons. Our climate in the UK is so varied that you never become bored with it. The landscape constantly changes too which all adds to the interest.
I can see though if you live alone how the evenings/nights must seem endless. You'll have to come to the chatroom more often :D
The downside of winter for me is the HUGE electricity and gas bills I get. I have the heating on non-stop I'm afraid so you can imagine the ££££££s just clocking up.
You miserable :o person!!
Winter is the best time of the year, when there are the most beautiful scenes, roasting chestnuts, PRESENTS, Christmas, SNOW, and soooo much more!!
Ok so it may get a bit cold and there may be some other set backs but hey its still the best!!!"
And this years going to be really bad, because
a) We had a really warm and long summer usually means a bad winter is on its way
b) We are due another 10-year bad winter and the last one was in 1988 when we had something like 2-3ft of snow WOOOO!!!! (I'm only guessing the figures I wasn’t born then so sorry if i’m wrong)
so to all out there
HAVE FUN THIS WINTER!! :D
WintersMist 23-10-2003, 21:03 I LOVE WINTER!!!
Winter is the best time of the year! I LOVE snow, it is the most beautiful (practically non-existant) weather we British ever get.
One thing I have have always said is in the winter when you are cold its easy to get warm - jumpers, fire, electricty... but in the summer its very hard to get cold - fan, but you cant take it everywhere, air conditioning - pricey and non existant or broke in our shops!
I'm off to NY in January and I'm excited because it usually snows.
Other thing I have noticed in the Winter the air seems cleaner!
WINTER ROCKS!
purplepippa 24-10-2003, 02:38 I'm *totally* with Hal on this one.
I hate snow. I hate being cold. I hate it being windy. I hate it the day after snow when there's just dirty mush on the floor. I hate getting colds and flu. I hate being paranoid to walk down the street in case I slip. I hate people's wet umbrellas making my jeans wet. I hate it when it's so snowy or rainy that your feet end up wet through your shoes. I hate the commercialism of Christmas. I hate grey grey skies and fog and mist.
If I could sleep through from early October to March I'd be much happier.
PaulTansley 24-10-2003, 10:52 Same here, i find Winter a dangerous time of year for riding the bike.
I feel the tarmac more this time of year because of the leaves and slippy roads and layers of clothing is not great either.
Domesticly, higher heating bills, short days, colds and flu's and Christmas (Boring).
Give me summer anyday, though i prefer Spring so at least theres something to look forward to in the Winter.
I love winter and I'm glad to see there are others on here who do too! My friends who like hot weather think I'm barmy. I love brisk, fresh mornings and wrapping up in warm clothes. I love the sound of walking on snow or fallen leaves.
Although I do agree that the low sun at this time of year is a nightmare when driving, but we can't have everything!

Sorry PP but it has actually been scientifically proven that getting colds/flu has nothing to do with being cold!! because when you get cold bacteria gets cold meaning it goes into dorment mode meaning that you should be at less risk!! and when its hot baacteria multiplies!!
Sorry
and any way its not even cold yet im still wearing shorts to school all i need is summat to keeep my ears warm and gloves to keep my hands warm and the rest does itself!!

You forget that we spend much more time indoors breathing recirculated air in the winter than we do in summer, multiplying the number of possible exposures to flu and cold viruses.
So winter does mean more colds and flu. If your body ever grew cold enough to stop bacteria from reproducing, you'd be dead!
dont you think snow is romantic?i do i dont know why tho!!!

Crikey, I feel old now! What fun it was in '88...
i didnt say it was "winter" that meant we dont have as many colds i said that being cold means we get less colds.
but it is true that if we did get cold enough to make bacteria go into dorment mode we would be dead but the colder we get the more dorment they get!! that is true

And Carl Warking:)
MichaelTravis 25-10-2003, 13:18 I'm with Mo. We should appreciate the changing seasons we get in the UK. They break up the year nicely. I understand that winter can bring some discomfort, and even misery, especially to the elderly, but it has a lot going for it too (see other posts). Besides, if it wasn't for winter, you wouldn't appreciate spring and summer.

BrainThrust 25-10-2003, 14:13 I think that whether you like summer or winter is all about if you burn or tan.
I burn so badly with the slightest inclination so summer is a perpetual nightmare for me, plus i don't like being too hot.
At least in winte you can put on loads of clothes and be toasty.
Winter anyday for me, despite having to get up at 6:30, (it seems much earlier in the dark.

Ahh, this is true for me too. I only have to look at the sun and I go lobster red. By the time I've slapped on my factor 30 I've lost interest in sitting out in the sun 'cause I also know I'll just stay pale and white. *Sigh*
At least in the winter most of the folks who are in the UK won't be suntanned either!
I'm not a fan of hot weather so I don't mind Winter that much. I like the daytime in winter, it's just the cold dark mornings that I dislike.
All our seasons have something good about them.
SPRING = Fresh growth and a feeling of awakening.
SUMMER = Balmy evenings, barbies, flowers, insects and stuff.
AUTUMN = Golden colours, clear frosty mornings, chestnuts.
WINTER = Snow scenes, (my garden looks as good as everyone else's), Christmas, looking forward to Spring.
Now the other version ----
SPRING = Noisy bloody birds breeding.
SUMMER = Wasps, horrible heatwaves, fat people in shorts!
AUTUMN = Slippy leaves, washing covered in purple bird-crap.
WINTER = Slush, car frozen-up, bloody cold, looking forward to those noisy bloody blackbirds breeding, again!
What the hell, we've the best climate in the world. Something for everyone.
