Hi

Can anybody tell me if there are any decent council estates in sheffield i.e in a nice area like ecclesall, hunters bar etc...

I am about to apply to rent a council house but need to stipulate 3 estates as preference.

Cheers

There's a nice one at Wadsley. If I think of any more I'll add them.

I'd have said Totley and Owlthorpe but big waiting list for the latter.

Only a Small 10-15 year wait for a Council House/Flat in Totley.

There is the Northern Counties Estate on which I live on in Abbeydale park/Dore.
There are 1&2 Bedroom flats here but BEWARE because this is Sheffield 17 you have to provide 5 refrences which are all checked.

Falls on floor laughing.

council. estates. in ecclesall.

we should live so long!

And the council estates, mentioned at totley and dore, well, the right-to-buy-ers all snapped them up double quick, so sadly, there are only the not-so-good areas left for the aspirational among the council tenants.

actually, seriously, there *are* horrendous long waits for virtually anywhere decent, no matter where across the city.

OTOH, You can almost virtually walk into the housing office and they'd hand you keys to a property in the less nice/ less popular areas like wincobank/ flower estate. (they're practically begging for tenants in some low demand areas)

if you contact the housing dept, they can send you a copy of the bookletlists of what properties are on what estates, with a rough idea of what sort of wait you could be in for.

Good luck with your search, smarm, Sheff's a good city to live in. I wouldn't want ot live anywhere else.

If I were you, I'd choose to live in the one of the towerblocks at the bottom of London Road (officially called the Lansdowne estate) because I've lived there for a few years and apart from the odd dog peeing in the lift, and the dirty pigeons it's fine. Also, it doesn't feel like you're living on a council estate because you're living right in the middle of town, and for a fraction of the price! Obviously it depends who your neighbours are, but it's generally very quiet (the loudest thing is the noise of the buses in the morning) and walking round the flats at night is usually pretty safe. (alot of pensioners live in these flats which kind of says it all)
Second choice I'd put down Netherthorpe flats as they've had a bit of a face lift and look ok, although I think the red light area surrounding them is a bit dodgy.
One word of warning though. I wouldn't accept any old council flat at short notice if I were you. It is sure to be in a rough area.
The waiting lists for the better flats are huge, (can take over a year) but it's worth the wait.
Also, I doubt very much whether you'll get a council flat in ecclesall, hunters bar. I mean, do such things even exist?
Good luck!

Isn't there a weekly list published from the housing place in town? The one across from Howden House? You could always look in their window as well to see what is on offer.

I agree with Kitt, those tower blocks (Lanswodne) are ok (i had one of those flats a few years ago). Nicely central.

As for Eccleshall = LOL. PLease! oh come on! the coundil dont hand out stuff like that. Set your sights a little lower. (p.s. Lansdowne is virtually in Eccleshall road, think about it)

There ARE still council properties that ARE council owned still in Dore.

They have to be the extemely rare exception that proves the rule.

I mentioned in another thread, that one, single, solitary council house that was left at Crosspool (if indeed it still is in L-A hands, since my friend moved out a couple of years ago) the other tenants on that block all bought their houses, leaving just my friends property in the council's hands.

My aunt lives on the Aldam estate in Totley, and the LA housing stock around her is being snapped up like you have never known, and then sold on for a massive profit. The tenants are buying the property for some stupid sum, like about 15 grand, and selling it on for 88 grand.

it's a complete and utter Screw!

No I noticed it..... but council estates in Ecclesall was just too ridiculous a question to bother responding to...

AFAIK, the estates you name will be irrelevant anyway, as I believe you will now be allocated points based on your need, and you use these to bid on LA housing. You will be able to bid on any LA property, not just the ones in the areas you name.

I think that is just a legacy from the old "waiting list" system. the new system (which was trialled in our area) is far better as you can see many properties that require few or no points, and use your judgement as to whether they will be right for you or not.

I'd recommend you avoid Parsons Cross and Shiregreen like the proverbial plague if you value your health, sanity and valuable possessions.... Shiregreen in particular is second only crime-wise reputedly to the Lower Manor estates.

Sure there's perfectly normal very nice people on both estates, but sadly those are outnumbered by the scallies, blurts and thugs that would rob you as soon as give you the time of day.

I agree to a certain degree as i live on Shiregreen.(one of the normal people)You can live normally if you set out your intentions to the scum from the start. When I first moved in I had a slight run in with a couple of the dirtbags, and made my feelings know.No violence, just let them know you are not cared of them, and they take the blame for anything that happens to your stuff.I have now been here ten years and not had one bit of trouble.
