Fulwood Cottage Homes (the orphanage?) was on Blackbrook Road, Lodge Moor and is now a private housing development called Moorside. I used to live near Fulwood Church and remember the children filing back to the Homes on a Sunday morning - I'm talking about the 1950's :)

I lived on rochester drive in the 60s early 70s,we as kids referred to this place as 'The naughty girls home' A couple of my school friends mothers were house matrons on there,if memory serves me correctly the two friends who lived on there shared their homes with two or three of the 'naughty girls!!' Would imagine in this PC society they would be 'Young disadvanteged females with behavioral problems!!' rather than a more apt description of 'young lasses that dont want to behave themselves!!' I do recall they had a meeting hall on there which I think doubled up as youth club, place of worship, function room. My brother was in a band in the late 60s and played there a couple of times.

Thankyou for location of homes .
The reason for my visit is to take my 87 yr old Great Aunt. who was put in the home with her 3 sisters and brother in 1925.
She did indeed go to Sunday school at Fulwood
They were all there till age of 15.then went on to make thier way in life ..My Gt Aunt is a wonderful lady and has such memories, which I feel privledged to have shared ...We are heading there tomorrow so hoping for good weather .

Evening all,

Well, i'm a current resident of 'Fulwood Cottage Homes', now Moorside.
We often hear many stories of resisdents from the past, and a few years ago for the houses 100 year aniversary we held a little garden party for the residents past and present - it was a lovely lunch.

But back on track, I have a small book which might be of some use to you. It is 'for the Love of Children, A Story of the poor children of sheffield and of Fulwood Cottage Homes' by Marjorie P. Dunn, ISBN 0-9513824-0-3, printed by 'Print and Design Factory Sheffield'.

Unfortunatly I will out tomorrow (grrr work lol) but I will copy the pages relavent to the homes and leave them in a safe place for you (I will PM you the location). These should be interesting to you both and may give you some more information.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, I will try and answer as best I can.

I wish you and your great Aunt a safe trip up to sheffield, and hope you enjoy your time here :-)

I've just read this topic.
Can I just thank you Sedge for going out of your way to help these people, it's the sort of gesture I expect of Sheffield people and I'm glad to see I'm not disappointed

Hello Yes it was all you say except the naughty girls bit. Most of us kids in there came from broken homes or disadvantaged people.I was in there for a few years and didnt come across any Naughty girls just little kids being abused, read threads on orphanages and you can read all about it.very hard times.

The other poster you're responding to meant something else. FCH became an institution for 'wayward' girls AFTER yours and my tenure. I remember visiting FCH with step-sister Wendy (who you know, of course) when we visited England (and Sheffield) in 1967. I wanted to show Wendy the place where I was all but raised. The cottages appeared to be unchanged then and the feeling at being there some 12 years after I'd been 'released' was a most surreal experience. I ran into a staff-member (a Miss Johnson ...? ...a tall, slender, 'matronly' looking woman) who had also been a staff member of FCH. She held some kind of an administrative position both in FCH and the girl's institution. Everyone at FCH would have known her as she did the rounds regularly. I could be wrong on the name but it's something like the one I gave. Anyway, she remembered my having been at FCH when I told her who I was.

Yes, I too would LOVE to see some photographs of the 'cottages' as they appear today. Could someone oblige and post them on the forum?

Does anyone know of a family called Marsden from Fulwood (not the cottage homes)

My half brother's father came from that area. His name was Levy Marsden and he married Rebecca Dodson in 1926, they had a son Jack. My mother talked about a person called auntie Charlotte but I don't know her surname.

I see this is an old thread but I haven't seen it before.

Fulwood Cottage Homes,Blackbrook Road ,Fullwod,Sheffeild. 10.B Ali

When the houses where renovated some 22 years ago the name was changed - for what reason I don’t know. The road which now encircles the houses is called Moorside and has been assigned the post code S10 4 Lima November (to avoid the address trawled etc etc).

Sedge

***EDIT***

And since Google launched the Streetview service in the UK, Moorside is partly visible (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=20+Moorside+S10+4LN+UK&sll=53.784579,-0.374597&sspn=0.008773,0.019205&ie=UTF8&ll=53.367366,-1.557548&spn=0.00886,0.019205&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=53.367286,-1.557503&panoid=DDX-qHC4xNgU9AXjMYejLw&cbp=12,313.65,,0,2.89).
When the service started there was the whole east section of road visible, now this has been cut down the the south east coner only - I assume this is a radius taken from the city centre out and the rest has just been cut.

My mum Pamela Hall was in Fullwood Cottage Homes until leaving school around 1940. She has often told me of looking after the young ones, having a large bag of sugar each at the table & making toffee to try & get rid of the stuff. She can't bring to mind the names of the 'mothers', but often comes up with little gems.

1940-45 was a rough time for most at Fullwood I was never allowed to see my sister or in fact talk to any of the girls,my nice kind house witch told us we would "catch"something by talking ,she was in fact straight out of the dark age's

Hi everyone,

My mum was a 12 year old girl in Fulwood Cottage Homes in 1918. I don't know when she was first taken there but she left and went to live with her sister at age 16.

Her sister had also been in FCH but ran away. They both hated it. I have a pic of my mother standing outside one of the stone buildings. She is wearing black stockings (which they made there I gather) and a gym slip.

She told me that she remembers being taken to visit her mother in the workhouse on Sundays and that the visiting room was large with wooden benches round the walls; babies in nappies crying and other children visiting in the same room at the same time. Would this workhouse have also been in Fulwood.

In her effects there are two little letters from little girls who wrote to her from FCH. They are really sweet letters in childish round script.

Any information on the life there between 1906 and 1918 would be much appreciated or could anyone please point me to a site which would tell me what it was like for the children of the early 20th century?

I work in a Nursing Home and one of our ladies was a resident in this orphanage along with her siblings. She is a very well spoken lady and speaks very highly of her house mother. They were in the fulwood cottages, not because they were naughty but because of family problems She tells me lovely stories of her time in there, she met her husband at a dance at the city hall or somewhere like that, he was in the army. She had some more sisters in there with her but has lost contact with them. She didnt originate from Sheffield, but cant recall where she said she did come from. She probably was there around that time.

Hi Brian, I'm not really sure what i was hoping to find out to be honest. I suppose i am a little dissappointed that my grandfathers name isn't on your list, although betty and roy were his sister and brother. There were others too, as i mentioned in my previous post and his cousins the Compton's.
Unfortunately my grandfather died in 1992 and apart from telling my grandmother that he was put into a home as a child he never spoke of FCH.
The reason I am looking for information now is that I have recently found 2 of his sisters who were adopted, one of which was called Mavis, the other was only a baby (3 weeks old when adopted) so i'm not sure if she would have been at FCH. I don't really know anything about the place apart from what I have read on here.
Thanks

HI FLYER, INFO ON ENDCLIFFE PARK PLANE CRASH FEBRUARY 22end 1944.
A BIT OF THE STORY GOES AS.
THERE HAD BEEN A LIGHT COVERING OF SNOW AND SOME KIDS HAD MADE A ICY SLIDE
ACROSS THE RD AT ENDCLIFFE PARK WHERE THEY`D PLAYED TILL DUSK FELL,
THEY BECAME AWARE OF THE AIRCRAFT APPROACHING AND WAS IN DEFINITE TROUBLE.
THE ENGINES WERE THROBBING AND SPLUTTERING AND EVENTUALLY THE CRIPPLE
AIRCRAFT PASSED DIRECTLY OVER THE ROOFTOPS.
THE PLANE WAS TURNING IN A WIDE CIRCLE AND HEADING UP ECCLESALL RD, ONE OF THE BOYS PLAYING ON THE SLIDE SAID IT WAS AN B40 BOMBER.
AFTER 10 MINUTES HAD PASSED CIRCLE`ING THE PLANE CRASHED IN ENDCLIFFE PARK
WOODS AND WAS ON FIRE, A SMALL CROWD OF PEOPLE HAD GATHERED AND WERE
MILLING AROUND.
A POLICE CONSTABLE RAN IN FRONT OF THE CROWD SHOUTING TO STAND BACK AS
THERE MAY BE BOMBS ON BOARD, IT WAS SAID THE PILOT WAS TRYING TO LAND THE
PLANE ON THE PLAYING FIELD IN THE PARK BUT SPOTTED BOYS KICKING A BALL ABOUT
ON THE SNOW COVERED GRASS.
TWO YOUNG BOYS WHO WAS AT THE SCENE AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH WENT TO
HELP BUT WAS HELD BACK ,THERE WAS A SPILT FUSELAGE AND ONE OF THE CREW WAS
STRUGGLING TO GET OUT.
HIS FLYING SUIT WAS ALL HOOKED UP IN THE TWISTED METAL AND THE FLAMES WERE
BELCHING AROUND THE CREW MEMBER, THE POOR AIRMEN FELL BACK INSIDE THE
FUSELAGE TO BE CONSUMED BY THE INFERNO.
B40 BOMBER-- MI AMIGO--------
----------
HOPE THE STORY WAS OF SOME HELP FLYER.
