OK, on behalf of my housemates boyfriend.

He was driving round the roundabout near Sheff Uni and a bus pulled out and rear-ended him. He skidded, but managed to steer safely off the roundabout and stopped. The bus however just carried on it's route. He didn't manage to get the busses details, other than the fact it was a First Mainline bus (possibly a 52). Unfortunately he didn't manage to get a witness statement, but has reported it to the police.

Now, if he reports this to First Mainline and they just deny it, where does he stand legally?

Incidentally the damage is not severe, but there is a large dent in the back of the car, with paint residue in First Mainline's colours.

He hasn't reported it to First yet, but I was wondering , as I think they probably will just deny it.

Hi Andy, a slightly similar thing happened to me a few years ago. A lorry decided to change lanes near the Train Station and shunted the rear drivers side of my car out of his way.

The lorry didn't stop, but I managed to follow him, eventually get in front of him and made him stop.

He said he hadn't realised he'd even hit me?

Anyway, got his insurance details but then he/the company denied it. It took nearly two years and my insurance company was going to take them to court when the eventually paid up.

Get it reported straight away, with the timings they should at least be able to pin it down to only a couple of buses. PS: I see loads of 52 buses as they terminate almost outside my house. Let me know what colour paint and where abouts on the bus the damage will be and i'll look out for ya! If I see one i'll make a note of the reg.

Is there CCTV in that area that would show what happened?

It is possible that the bus drive was unaware that he had hit him, I would contact first mainline giving them as much detail as possible time, date , location the bus was going ect the bus will have paint on it from his car so you need to do it ASAP before they wash away the evidence.

My husband used to drive articulated lorries and once hit a car on a very small roundabout due to the size of the lorry he was unaware that he had actually hit the car until the driver flagged him down further down the road.

A little bit off topic, but I heard this (http://motoring.reuters.co.uk/reuters/vocmain.jsp?lnk=101&id=1153) on the radio today about a truck pushing a car for 2 miles without knowing!

Firstly, I mean the car was hit by a bus. I'm not sure what else it could mean really.

Secondly, as I mentioned, this wasn't about me, but someone I know.

Thirdly, why should someone pay the insurance for something that wasn't their fault. Especially when no-claims comes into it
