View Full Version : Computer freezes need help
SpiderPete 11-05-2005, 15:29 Ello ..
I have a problem with my computer, before I go into details if you want to post silly responses then dont please....
My computer just freezes and I dont know why, only way out of it is to switch base unit off and back on, mouse and keyboard do not work.
This mainly can happen when I watch a film, or play a game, sometimes it goes when I am surfing.
I have a 1333mhz Athlon, 512mb memory, a new graphics card FX5700, new fan, windows 2000 recently installed, no virus or adware/spyware is present, even with old version of windowws2000/fan/graphics card it still did it.
System fan says 35c, and CPU 52c, the new fan got the CPU down from 70+c.
I am at a loss why my pc keeps freezing, it may be something simple.
Any help would be grateful, I am on everyday so if anyone needs more info or answers i can come back quickly.
Fingers crossed ...

if its freezing while watching a dvd or playing a game id say its lack of memory, or something eating your resources........those are the things that use the most resources

LOL You seem to like blaming memory for just about everything.
Has Win2K ran smoothly on this current setup before?
It sounds like some form of confliction but finding out why these things occur are often hard and time consuming. Any software/drivers you installed around the time the problems started I advise un-installing.
If you still have no joy from that I'd format and re-install windows.

memory is the most important bit.
also causes the most problems from slowdown to complete lack of booting
Nortons steals a lot of memory so get shut of that if you have that on your system, also I'd recommend more memory if possible, a good defragging using PerfectDisk to sort the job also.
Failing that.. wipe the drives and get WinXP, or just stick Win2000 back on.
I'd check your system with 2 good spyware softwares though just in case.. try Ad-Aware Pro and Microsoft Anti Spyware.
Also-- just thought of summat else.
Download and try Tuneup Utilities 2004 and see if that picks up any crap in your registry and problems with your files on the system now.
Good luck.

I think you will find after years of experience this is not entirely true.

y?
with my measly experience ive already noticed those symptoms quite a bit and fixed it.............which have been memory related.
and what is the main bit of a computer then?
you can get by with slower cpus and smaller hard drives etc but if youve not got much memory then your fux0r3d
SpiderPete 11-05-2005, 21:15 Well thanks for all your inputs so far, and here are a few answers:
Lack of memory - I have 512mb so cannot see it being that.
Has Win2K ran smoothly on this current setup before? - answer is no. I thaught a new re-install would cure it, but didnt
I have installed windows2000 again, and same problem.
I don`t have Norton at all.
I use 3 spyware programmes,
I shall try Tuneup Utlilities and see what that does.
My system use to freez when it cought a virus, viruses service would go ahead and take 99% of CPU time and leave the system unresponsive. As you say you dont run antivirus software perhaps that could be the problem. Try one of thoes free online scans  like:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
....and so on. Good luck! :D
SpiderPete 11-05-2005, 21:39 Sorry when I said I dont use Norton doesnt mean I dont run one, I do.
I tried panda and that was a nightmare for me, eventually uninstalled it.
I tried Tuneup and it cleared something, lol.
I am only using 48% of my memory, so cannot be that.

What anti spyware programs are you running peter41?
Do they have real-time protection running?
If so, they may be competing against/conflicting with each other.
I doubt this is your problem though.
It may be worth playing a film and opening Task Manager to see what is happening with your memory and your processor as the film plays
SpiderPete 11-05-2005, 21:45 What anti spyware programs are you running peter41?
I use Spyware Doctor, Spybot, Ad-Ware, BT Yahoo Anti-Spy
Do they have real-time protection running?
Yes - and it is Spyware Doctor, the others are not running, I scan with each one on boot-up.

I shall give this a try, thanks.

Well with my measley 11 years I've noticed quite a few other symptoms.
The main bit of a computer would be the Motherboard.
You simply can't get by with slower cpus and hds as they wouldn't function for newer software. I think you'd be just as fux0r3d with a 486 trying to run Windows XP as you would with low memory.

up untill i bought this 1300mhz duron / 224 mb ram puter for £20 i have been using an 800mhz / 191 mb mb for the past few years and it did me fine...........i was using me and 2000.watching/ripping dvds............doing everything (apart from playing upto the minute games, which im not bothered about really) BUT if i had less memory in, id be up ****creek so to speak, my computer would be reeeeeaaaaaaalllly slow doing owt.
the thing i hate about computer ads on the telly is............they dont tell you whats in a computer..apart from a pentium 4 processor............i need to know what memory is in it, how big the hard drive is, how good the graphics and sound cards etc are, whether the graphics/sound/modem etc are onboard or not
sadly most people see pentium 4 and think oooh ferrari
