What the hell is it with the traffic on Glossop Road in the morning?

I leave for work in meadowhall at the same time every morning, and in the last few days have got in at 8:45am, 9.15am and 9:30am respectively. This wasnt down to an accident or failed traffic lights, but sheer inconsistent levels of traffic. Take last Tuesday. From Broomhill shops to town took about 10 mins. Today the same journey took 40 mins. If it took the same time every morning, I would understand, but it doesnt. As such, it makes planning ones journey absolute hell.

Are there dark forces at work? Does anyone else have the same problems???!!

You could move to wincobank ;)

That is what the traffic problem is - everybody travels further to work these days

I suspect it will get even worse once they get stuck in to this Inner Ring Road project....the price of progress ?

Cynicism makes me so angry.

Sorry for making you angry Andy ;) - but I wasn't intending to sound. cynical. You have only to look at the plans for this project to appreciate the level of traffic disruption that is likely to occur.

If I were to be cynical about the situation I would be suggesting that Sheffield CC have once again put the cart before the horse :D

In the last couple of weeks there have been regular tailbacks of traffic.

Walkley traffic queuing from Springvale.
Crookes traffic queuing from before the Grindstone.
Even big queues back of Tesco's (Infirmary Road) / Philadelphian Club.

I'm guessing more people taking "short cuts" because Shalesmoor closed - although I can't for the life of me think why they'd choose going in through Walkley or Crookes - surely best way to go along Penistone Road as per usual then up St Phillips and turn left at lights by Shell petrol station towards Scotland Street.

ps Greybeard - talking to a consultant at work today who'd travelled up from Nottingham. It had taken him best part of 3/4 of an hour to get from just outside Nottingham to M1 due to major road works on Nottingham ring road. Traffic ain't just a problem in our city.

I think the problem this morning was due to the bus which had broken down on Ecclesall Road roundabout.

Everyone seemed to be diverting up Brocco Bank and into town via Brook Hill. The road just couldnt cope with the extra traffic.

The 'Dark Forces' are the trams that have priority at the Glossop Rd / Hanover St junction. Everything has to stop for them. Sometimes it's ok, sometimes the trams all come together and the lights stay at red for Glossop Rd. I've been sat at that junciton in front of the lights for over 10 minutes in the past.

I used to live in Crookes and the traffic going up that way is horrendous.

I can't understand why anyone who has to travel on the roads to and from work during rush hour would ever think Crookes is a desirable place to live.

Don't think it's just the trams.

Traffic only used to back up to Commonside / Springvale about once a month, usually in heavy rain. It's been nearly every day the last couple of weeks.

Again, often go in via Crookes after dropping youngest at school. Until last couple of weeks a maximum five mins (usually less) to get to Broomhill lights, then going straight across and left at lights by Rutland Hotel / King Teds and another five mins (ten absolute tops) before parking up at work.

I've lived at the Broomhill end of Crookes for the best part of three years. There is always a long line of slow moving traffic going towards and through Broomhill during rush hours. I can beat a 52 in a race from outside Tapton to the Glossop/ Northumberland intersection. Walking I mean - I have better things to do than run alongside buses ;)

Just wind down your window and enjoy the wonder of Glossop Road; the best road in the world! (Apart from the plotholes).

Or you could do what I do:

"British Household Time" :

Explanation...

Bedside alarm clock, Kitchen clock, Car clock all 10 minutes fast. (This is called "British Household Time" or BHT. But you've got to believe that is the time).
Then set your wrist watch for correct time. Just follow BHT until you near work, then revert to "GMT or British Summer Time" and relax!
