View Full Version : Sheffield to Gatwick
What's the easiest way to get down to the south coast?
Worthing to be specific.
Sheffield/Doncaster airport doesn't seem to fly to London at all, Leeds/Bradford flies to gatwick which is 23 miles from Worthing. But isn't L/B the wrong side of leeds to be commuting too in a morning?
Can anyone think of an easier way?
beansfeast 11-05-2005, 11:37 I quite regularly visit Worthing and always drive. Only normally takes about 3-3.5hrs and it's never been so bad i wouldn't do it again.
I'm assuming you only want to fly though? How about the train?

Yeah, but you really want to be on a GNER East Coast Mainline train if you can help it ;) (from Doncaster). If you pick the right one you can get to London in just one stop

Scab a lift off Briano? :D
When you say 'commuting to in a morning' when referring to Leeds/Bradford airport - are you planning on doing this journey regularly?
Commuting from Sheffield to LBA would be a right pain in the ar*e and that's before you set off on the rest of your journey?!
Is there anything from East Mids airport? (or Nottingham as it's now called)? At least then you'd be heading in the right direction!
Train is prob going to be your best bet and the GNER line is pretty quick.

lol, unfortunately I'm not going that way for at least the next couple of months!
However, when is it you're wanting to go Cyclone?
the 5.35 from Donny gets into worthing at 9.33 - change twice.
You may need to insert a 'via' to get the best results from www.nationalrail.co.uk (coz the software isn't always that brainy) ;)
Travelling from birmingham may be less painful
(you haven't given us all the info though, so I dunno if that'll help)
the train from sheffield would be 5 hrs, and I don't fancy driving down through rush hour traffic twice a week.
If I go it'll be twice a week for probably 6 months to a year.
Nothing from Sheffield/Donc or east midlands to Gatwick. Could go Manchester, but it's a good hours drive over to manc airport, then I guess an hours flight, and 30 mins drive at the other end. Plus getting to the airport for checking probably makes it about 4 hrs.
I expect driving in rush hour could easily take 5 to 6 hrs.

Maybe you should get a faster car lol, I have driven down on several occassions on Friday's straight after work and still only taken a max of 4hrs.
Could be longer on Monday mornings though since I've never done it at that time...

I drive to London fairly often, it's at best 2.5hrs, easily double that in rush hour as big sections of the M1 will be stationery.
To get to worthing you have to get around London, and the M25 will probably be moving at a crawl, and after that the journey is probably okay.
Mapblast suggest 3.5hrs, but that would be at a steady 70.
Just a suggestion.
Try going down the A1 then cutting across on the A14 at Huntingdon to pick up the M11 from Cambridge.
Use M25 to east of London - that side is usually a fair old bit quieter than the west by Heathrow / M4 etc - then finally M23 toward Brighton / Worthing.
I've used this route as far as M20 junction off the M25 (just over Dartford Bridge) on a few occasions and considerably less hold ups than M1 / M25 west of London.
Journey of about 250 miles, 4 - 5 hours?

Get the 0630 Thompsonfly out of Finningley to Dublin, then the 0815 Ryanair out of Dublin to Gatwick. gets in at 0930hrs..!
Depending on how far in advance you book, it coud be about £75 return...

Ah, it's not for a weekend then? Your next project?
Berberis 11-05-2005, 22:07 You can get a train direct from Sheffield to London then hop on a thames link down to gatwick .. that should be pretty easy.
It does take a while though as the train is pretty slow through london!

not too bad an idea. That would mean being at finningley for 0600, leaving shef at 0530, getting up at 0500. And be in work by 10:30 - 11. Not exactly daily commute times, but doable.
Fortuately i've just been extended until the end of June on this assignment, so no need to go anywhere and hopefully that worthing role will have gone to someone else by the time I finish here.
pete_jim 12-05-2005, 11:37 Often travelled to Worthing sod of a journey, can't imagine trying to do it twice a week. Alternative go M1 to jct 19 (?)off onto the A roads via Crick, Towcester & Silverstone, M40 to junction@ Oxford down to the S Coast from there. Sounds long way but can be as quick/quicker + traffic fast moving round the Newbury by pass. I'd move to Worthing for the duration lovely place. South Downs, Chichester, Brighton London in 1hr.......

I have no intentions of moving away from Sheffield, i think i'll just decline the assignment.
I doubt my SO would be keen to give up her job either, so moving isn't even an option if I wanted to consider it.
FunKyBaBe 12-05-2005, 11:46 I used to go to Worthing by train every two weeks coz my bf was there. The quickest time was 4.5 hours and that's only when the trains were not delayed. Sheffield-London St. Pancras-London Victoria-Worthing, or Sheffield-London St. Pancras-Kings Cross Thameslink-Brighton-Worthing.
I'm so glad I don't have to do it anymore.
