View Full Version : New Computer - can't get Email to work
Treatment 22-09-2008, 01:19 I, like the silly old sod that I am, am still on dial up, through Virgin net. I got, in March, a Dell Inspriron 1720 Laptop to replace my old 1998 computer.
I can't get the Email to work, and Virgin are as about much use as a chocolate teapot.
The error message keeps saying something like '' Pop 3 server error, you have entered the wrong password''.
I have been given a new password fron Virgin, but it does no good, neither does using the old password.
I can get on the Internet OK, as I am using the Dell now.
They (Virgin) keep putting forward various suggestions, like McAfee may be to blame, but I get the impression that they just want to string out the time that I am on to their, so called '' helpline''.
P.S. I can still get the old computer's Email to work, as I took the precaution of not ditching it - you can tell that I am a Sheffielder !
Any ideas please ?
Many thanks.
baby_sarah 22-09-2008, 01:55 are you using a specific email software or just can't get them full stop.?
you can get your emails through msn for example>>>*******@hotmail.co.uk if you go to www.msnhotmail.co.uk
www.msnhotmail.com
you can view any email sent to you
hope this helps
Treatment 22-09-2008, 04:03 I think that the one on this Dell is called '' Windows Mail '', whereas the one on my ancient machine is called '' Outlook ''. I think that I have got that the correct way round.
I tried the Hotmail that you suggested, but that does not work. I think that my kids used to use that on a different computer when they were at college.
If my memory serves me correctly they used to use Hotmail, but they had to be connected while they were composing Emails, whereas I could stack up some Emails, and then send the lot in one go.
Hi, what does your e-mail address end in, ie, is it virgin.net/blueyonder.co.uk/ntlworld.com ? They might have slightly different settings?
I had the same problem as you but I could go onto Virgin home page & then onto their e-mail to see my mail.
walkertelecoms 22-09-2008, 08:58 It's usually better in cases like this to be sat in front of the PC in question, then it's a few minutes fix, there are so many things that could be wrong trying to explain it to a novice could make matters worse, like loss of internet collection all together. Isn't that right Treatment..... Treatment, I said sin't that right.....Treatment?
lol

I don't necessarily agree, email isn't difficult to set up, but it is highly frustrating when it doesn't work! And things like McAfee can cause problems unfortunately. Treatment, if you still have the same problem I'd be happy to try and help, send me a PM if you like, can't guarantee we'll be able to sort it but we can try!
newvanandman 23-09-2008, 07:03 Is the my server requires Authententication box ticked and the settings correct?
The error message keeps saying something like '' Pop 3 server error, you have entered the wrong password''.
I have been given a new password fron Virgin, but it does no good, neither does using the old password.
No one seems to have discussed the username in the thread so far?
I have no familiarity with McAfee. Unless it separately stores your password and username, I dont see why your mail program would give that error.
Try re-setting your username & password & try again. Also have you got outlook as you mailserver.
cgksheff 23-09-2008, 10:41 Just a thought ..... have you checked the keyboard?
It is possible that there is a different layout compared to your old one and you may be hitting the wrong keys, have CapsLock on, need a different shift/key combination to get an @ etc?
johnrabbiton 23-09-2008, 15:10 your pop3 and incoming mail properties need to be correct
your pop3 and incoming mail properties need to be correct

johnrabbiton 23-09-2008, 20:01 what internet service provider are you with, and are you using outlook express
we have btbroadband, yes its outlook express, but its always had that msg on it, so we use yahoo for emailing.
johnrabbiton 23-09-2008, 20:51 ok, now you should call btbroadband for settings for example my settings are
incoming mail
pop.tiscali.co.uk
outgoing mail
smtp.tiscali.co.uk
