View Full Version : Hanging yourself up with big hooks

Did anyone watch that program about piercing last night when that guy put big hooks in his back and hung from them.

Now, I'm not a squeemish person but I couldn't watch it, and when they showed you how various piercings were done was frightening, thank god I kept my eyes closed when I had my nipple pierced, I wouldn't have wanted to see that.

Some of the people on the program seemed realy nice, like the OAP couple who had just got into piercing.

What do you think when you see body piercings ?

I have to say that I find piercings rather strange.

I guess I'm conservative;

Ears - OK.
Nose - sort of OK.
Anywhere else - eeek.

How about those big holes in ears Joe?

(not me, BTW. And lots of people remark about my nose after knowing me for 18months as the stud is so small :D )

Those big holes in the ears look realy weird, I can't imagine wanting to nibble an ear lobe like that, it would be like nibbling an elastic band.

Small holes.

Having said that, it's personal taste. I just prefer people to look like people and not like the Borg from Star trek :)

Aren't they called flesh tunnels or something equally hideous? (seriously!) :P A friend of mine decided he wanted to stretch his ear piercings so that he could put a flesh tunnel thingy in; this was achieved by gradually pushing a cone shaped 'earring' further each day into his piercing :gag: It wasn't pleasant :suspect:

EDIT : They are 'flesh tunnels' ...Here you go (http://www.naveljewellery.co.uk/cgi-bin/rs000001.pl?SOURCE=GoogleAd&DESTINATION=Ear_Jewellery_Flesh_Tunnels.html&PATH=/www/htdocs/acatalog&BASEURL=http://www.naveljewellery.co.uk/acatalog) (a very appropriately named site ;) )

I have no problems with people looking different - I just have a personal thing about body modification. It's just me. If I belonged to a culture where scarring, piercing or hanging from hooks was needed as a rite of passage then fine, but excessive piercings do give me the shivers.

Apart form the issues of infection and maintenance, excessive piercings are going to look really weird on you should you decide to enter a more conventional lifestyle. :)

Didn't see this tv programme (no telly). But piercings are intriguing, and certainly more common place nowadays.

Ears, eye-lids, nose, cheek, tongue, nipples, naval, and genitalia (on males it's called a Prince Albert, after Queen Victoria's husband).

Not that impressed myself with eye-lid and cheek piercings, but certain piercings can really make a guy or a gal look that extra little bit attractive.

As for hanging yourself up with two big hooks in the skin of your back - this sounds more like sado-masochism, or was it some tribal ceremony? Sounds like it may have been a remake of the Sun Vow Initiation scene in "A Man Called Horse", where Richard Harris is hung from the roof of a teppee with hooks through his pectoral muscles? (I had to wait 20 years to finally see that scene - as the person I was with when the film premiered fainted at that point!).

It shows nothing except body jewellery, no actual piercings ;) I only posted the link because I didn't want anyone to think I had actually come up with the name 'flesh tunnel' by myself! :o :D :P

Its really a matter of personal taste - I like the look of most of them (and tattoos!) but am far too much of a coward to have them done myself! Not keen on madonna spot or cheek but other than that they are all good!

Joe

It is possible to be pierced and/or tattooed (quite heavily in my husband's case) and still lead a conventional lifestyle! We both have good jobs and always have done, have a mortgage, engage in DIY and anything else you might expect to while living a "conventional" lifestyle. Having piercings or tattoos doesn't necessarily mean you have to have a pink mohawk or Harley Davidson to go with ;-)

Of course, the thought of typing "flesh tunnel" into google is more scary than imagining you came up with it yourself :o :gag: :hihi:

Anyone up to the challenge? type "flesh tunnel" into google and hit "I'm feeling lucky" :help:

I find face piercings quite repulsive, the worst being the one in the top lip "Madonna", it just looks so tacky, and makes the wearer look instantly stupid.
I don't like tattoes much either. Especially as lots of girls think they all need to have the same messy thing at the bottom of their spine. It is so nice to travel to countries where the young people look natural and pretty. Rather than a rush to look freaky that we appear to have in this country these days. When abroad you can often spot a big bunch of english youth/20s from a mile off, they are just so stereotypical, no individuality at all.

BTW I have not written this to offend anybody, It is purely my opinion, and also that of a few of my friends when we happen to talk about it.

I'm not a huge fan of piercing, nine times out of 10 it makes the wearer look pretty ugly.

Some piercings really turn my stomach too - I don't think I could date a man with his nipple pierced cause I'd be gagging every time he took his shirt off.

That said, I had a bolt put through my tongue when I was 16 and it's still there now. I just kind of forget that it's there, and with it being in my mouth not many people can see it. And no, I don't have a lisp when I talk! That's my only peircing though - I don't even have my ears done.

As for tatoos, my personal opinion is that they're very ugly. Most tatoos look really cheap and unorigional, and they go horrible and green as they age. Yuk!

Did you notice my eyebrow?

I used to have my tongue pierced too, had it in for about a year, but I messed with it so much (and that in itself is annoying enough to see on other people) that it put a slight groove in a top and bottom tooth! Yak! I had to take it out.

You're right, it's totally personal. I like some piercings - I especially like lip rings, but I really don't like the look of "beauty spots" & nose piercings, and while I'm indifferent to the look of nipple rings, the thought of it makes me feel a bit squemish.

Yes, they put bone skewers through his chest, and hung him up, I remember it now.

When we were kids we we used to read in comics and children's books about people from overseas who , for example , put rings round their necks , and as they grew older , put round more rings and it elongated their necks----naturally !
Also , there were stories of Chinese girls who were forced to wear tiny shoes and , again , over the years , this prevented their feet growing naturally , as small feet were considered beautiful in old China. Then there were the people who inserted , sort of plates inside their lower jaw , which made their lower jaw stick out like a shelf. It was difficult to believe that these primitive [to us] people went through so much pain and discomfort , for what was essentially beauty treatment or to look fashionable.
However , it's easy to understand now. , looking round today.I suppose if there is any pain , it's only at the beginning but to the onlooker it looks dangerous -----as if something might get entangled in something ! I don't suppose some people will ever change----there's always some who feel you must suffer for your Art !

It wasn't a simple as that. I saw something in a magazine about the mechanics of how some cultures make their girls have small, pretty? feet, and it involves cutting all their toe nails right off breaking all the bones in the minor toes with a big rock and folding them under the foot, before binding what is left in a very tight bandage.
Which sounds to me more like a hoof with a big toe sticking out, horrific.!

Muddycoffee ,

Thanks for the extra info. As you say , it was much more horrific than I remembered reading about. I suppose , the girls in China were under a lot of pressure ---or even forced----to comply with the treatment [?].
I guess the main difference today is that people , more or less , only get pierced and drilled voluntarily to look beautiful or fashionable.

In China small feet were a sign of class and breeding. The fact that they kept falling over and couldn't walk more than 5 steps obviously wasn't seen as a drawback.

Tattoos are seen in similar way in Mauri tradition, the more you have the higher you social standing, the tattoos also have a meaning, showing who your family is etc.

In this country these modifications are maily for fashion reasons, but the practices are thousands of years old and still have religious or cultural significance to many people.

You do get a strange feeling when you have a tattoo that you have marked yourself for life, it's a permanent message you want to send to people.

I don't really mind most 'visible' piercings. I've only got my ears pierced and won't be ever having anything else done.

But, those 'flesh holes' in the ears, the first time i saw one I couldn't believe it! :o

I haven't seen very many, must be going to the right places  but why? I really can't understand that one  What are they going to look like when they're old and wrinkly? At least with piercings they can be removed and are barely visible but great big holes in your ears

Aside from earrings on the earlobes of females, I don't particularly like any body piercings or tattoos.

I am very squeamish, and the sight of naturally attractive young females who choose to put bolts through their eyebrows or lips make me wonder for their mental state (or lack of).

The sight of men with earrings look very Bros, very 1980s.

The recent 'trend' to have the cartilage at the top of the ear pierced is something I also find strange.

As for tattoos, they may have been rebellious many years ago but now they are the height (or should that be the depths) of conformity.

Perhaps there's a reason all this makes me queasy. Back in the days of slave labour and concentration camps, shackling and branding was quite common. I'd like to think mankind has actually progressed in the past few decades :loopy:

o-kee-pa (sorry, cant spell it). Its a native american indian rite of passage also known as a 'sun dance'. It is basically a two-point chest suspension. People in the west practice suspension for a variety of reasons.

My suspension was an amazing experience that I shall never forget, and hope to repeat soon:thumbsup:

Hels

So are you saying you had a two-point chest suspension? What made you decide to do that? Why are you going to do it again soon?

badhairdo
23-07-2005, 00:17
no, I did a 4 point 'suicide' suspension (4 hooks across the back). I did it for a variety of reasons. What I got out of it were answers to questions I never realised Id asked!

For me, it was a personal rite of passage. I would like to do it again to explore myself some more.

not my bag really. no problem with facial pearcing. Not a keen fan of breast/privates piercing although belly button piercing can look quite hot
