As many of you know, the OH farrowed recently and now, after three kids we have decided to stop breeding.

I rang the docs yesterday to enquire about a vasectomy and next week Im off to make arrangements to have my mighty meat N two veggies made harmless.

However, the OH was at the docs today having the mini beast checked over, and the doc suggested that instead of me losing my manhood and becoming a mere mortal, that SHE try something called an IUS.

Aparrantly its placed inside her for five years, secretes a hormone that stops periods as well as pregnancies.

Im not sure about this at all, I dont fancy the idea of my OH having alien hormones pumped into her (other than the ones I pump into her.... nyuk nyuk nyuk) so I said Id go through with the slice N dice of my sweet meats, I dont mind it at all.

Trouble is she wants to try this IUS thing....

Does anyone have any experiences of it?

We're in a similar boat here, Jabbers - congrats, by the way! - it's time for a more permanent solution, and I reckon it's his turn to share the pain...but I'm also interested in other possibilities while we wait the long 6 months you have to in Sheffield. People's experiences of VERY EFFECTIVE contraception gratefully received :hihi:

I started on the mini pill after speedy 5 - hopefully it's working :suspect: but then i think i'm gonna get that 3 monthly injection. It's the same stuff as the mini pill, but obviously i dont have to take it every night - easier all round. My mate had that implant thing in her arm, but it looked nasty when she had it took out so that put me off completely. I need to be absolutely positively definite we will not be wanting any more children before I use the house bricks on MrSpeedDemon :hihi:
Cosy, you need to change yer signature hun :)

Jabbers - you have such a wonderful way with words! lol

Well Scarlett is 6 months this week and I have had the IUS fitted at my 6 week post natal check. I had the IUD previously and had to have it removed (a few years ago) due to it making me have heavy periods.

The IUS is designed to counteract this side effect as it releases progesterone slowly so in theory it makes periods lighter and for some women it makes them stop altogether, bonus if you ask me.

I've had mine in 4.5 months now and I must say that it's ok thus far, it made my periods really heavy at first and last a long time (10 days when I used to be 3) but this month it went to 5 days and was lighter so it's doing it's job.

You go for a yearly check with it and have it removed after 5 yrs so you can pretty much not think about it for that amount of time.

One thing I would say is you need to be sure you want it cause apparently it costs £100 a time and the GP wont give you it if you might want it removed early - there are other coils that last 3yrs.

I have the implant in my arm (can't have IUD/IUS or anything with oestrogen), which lasts for 3 years. I love it and I haven't had a period since March (previously was light and only 2-3 days anyway).

I don't know if I could ever convince Mr. Alien to do anything to his boys, purely because he's a wuss about medical things.

I had the IUS for around 8 months before giving in and having it removed. It was terribly painful, my periods were horrific and frankly it worked better as a tool of abstinence in the end. I was having to have painkillers to deal with it so I figured I might as well be taking the pill.
To put it in perspective from my POV, I'd rather have another set of twins - it was that bad! :D

I have the IUD which is a similar thing but without the hormones. Its fab for me, hasn't stopped my periods but that doesnt bother me, I don't like the idea of extra hormones so didnt consider the IUS.

Thanks for the replies so far everyone, the OH was reading this thread last night as well as strangling a kitten or two and shes definately considering the IUS.

I know someone who had the arm implant and it turned her into a raving psychopath so if the OH decides to have that fitted.... Ill be dead within a week!

I got an IUD 11 years ago, didn't fancy the extra hormones and couldn't take the pill any longer.
It's been fab...no problems at all, I would recommend it. I visit my Gynaecologist once a year to get it checked and have had it changed once. You cannot feel it at all.

I mean you cannot feel it when its in....if you know what I mean!!:hihi:
It's a bit uncomfortable being put in... but a breeze compared to childbirth!

I'd really rather do without any extra hormones, I've never gotten on with any form of pill.
OH is DEFINITELY having the op, there's not really any question. I guess they wouldn't want me to have the IUS anyway, as I only want it for as long as it takes for the permanent method to work.

Does having an IUD hurt?

EDIT: Lol, nurselinda, good timing....

oh and thanks, speedy, will change sig...

Its definately looking as if the OH will be going for the IUS.

Im not worried at all about the vasectomy- I was chatting to a friend about his experiences when he had it done and... I put my hands over my ears and sang loudly each time he mentioned words like "Swollen" and "Needles" and "Stitches."

Looks as if Im off the hook again :D

I had the ius fitted when baba was about 3 months old. It was uncomfortable to have put in and my periods were heavier to start off with. That was back in January. The last one was like 'blink and you missed it' none of the usual monthly cramps or heaviness
(I was heavy prior to having baba anyway.)
So it does take a while to settle down, but I am thinking it was good plan :)

Take some paracetamol before you go to have it fitted mrs jabbers and you will be fine!

Having only just discovered this group on SF I've been reading through many of the threads on here, but feel I should alert all of you who don't already know that with the IUS or even the regular injections you should be having a bone scan around every 3 years. I know this because my friend has only just been told by her GP after having had the injection for almost 10 years. So if you haven't had one - go see your GP or nurse.
On a more personal note, I had the injections some time ago now (after my first was born 12 years ago) and it made me put some right weight on cos it makes you feel constantly hungry and I also used to get really moody and nasty around the time it was due - every 10 weeks. I personally wouldn't recommend it to anyone but its all down to personal preference. I am now very comfortable with the coil after the birth of my second child - who is now 7. So have had one in for 5 years and then had it changed. True it's not the most pleasant of experiences but when you have to have a smear every 3 years its no more invasive than that.
